Looking for an old "pass it on" style scrapbook project

6 - 9 years ago there was an project where x empty books were sent out to x different people, who then filled one page, and passed the book on to someone else. What was this project?

Where's the solipsism references?

From what I can tell, the concept of solipsism is grossly under-explored and under-exploited by the arts (books, movies, fine art, etc). Are there any good references to solipsism in modern books, movies, or other entertainment media? If not, why not?

Document management. I get a lot of paper documents (bills, letters, invoices, etc) and want to catalog them digitally. I want a program that scans a sheet (or multiple sheets), turns them into PDF and catalogs them (title, category, and maybe even del.icio.us style tags). Acrobat will do the first two stages, but I want something that does the cataloging too. Any suggestions? OCR not needed whatsoever.

A Chinese stuffed nose

The Chinese character meaning 'to have a stuffy nose'. A remark by a Chinese language student on the complexity of the aforementioned symbol turns into an interesting discussion, trawling through a very thick etymology, that almost makes me want to learn Chinese! Fascinating if you're into languages, Chinese or not.

MedFilter: Is there any reason why, with an enriched blood supply attached, a severed head couldn't be kept alive? If so, could it be kept alive beyond typical life expectancy? The only worthwhile attempt at an answer I can dig up is this, but I imagine this question comes up in med school quite a lot.. (There is a particularly kookie book called If We Can Keep A Severed Head Alive.. on this topic but it's generally regarded as 'nut literature'.)

I'm looking for a story written in Victorian times,...

I'm looking for a story written in Victorian times, which was basically the author predicting what everything would be like in the 1990's. I think it was in Project Gutenberg, and it had funny predictions such as that we'd all have wires going from our houses to local concert halls so we could listen to the 'latest music' in every room! This story has eluded me for some years now, and I want to read it again. And to avoid this becoming a useless 0 answer question, if anyone can recommend any other notable old stories or books which try to guess what the future would be like, this is the ideal place!

This is for the biologists. Humans tend to be very symmetrical, either having one thing often in the middle (nose, genitals, mouth), or two things evenly placed (eyes, nostrils, legs). That said, do humans have three of anything? (We have three ear bones, but in each ear.. totalling 6, so that fails!)

The 24 Hour Dot Com. Two Swedish students at the 'Wizards of OS' conference in Berlin decided to start a dot com, build it up, and cash in within twenty four hours. Their IRC logs make great reading to see how they bought the PR and 'product' together. The dot com has now 'IPOed' and is available to buy on eBay.

Optigan: OPTIcal orGAN

The Optigan: OPTIcal orGAN. Long before synthesizers, ProTools, and Cubase, Mattel released a bizarre contraption called the 'Optigan' which operated by assigning each key to a track on an optical disc on which were recorded sounds of real instruments playing every individual note. This site is one guy's obsession with the instrument that may well be dead and forgotten if not for him. Check out his mp3s of his own, reasonably successful, band based around the instrument, to see how it sounds.

His name is Scott. He wears a nametag. All the time.

"Hello, my name is Scott." He's Scott, he's 22, and he's worn a nametag for the past 833 days. Why? So that people will feel more inclined to talk to him. To break down social barriers. Surprisingly, it has worked. I'm sure many of us try to be friendly to strangers, but in some cultures these days you're almost sure to be rebuffed or ignored. That's how it is here in the UK. Are people open and friendly in your part of the world without needing gimmicks like a nametag?

Mug shots of 2002.

The Smoking Gun's top mug shots of 2002. It sounds dull, but these mug shots are truly inspired. Fashion photographers slave for years to get results like these, which police photographers can get in seconds! Proof that ordinary folk usually make more interesting subjects than celebrities. Since the start of December, whenever I've written a post for the front page, previewed it, then hit the final 'Post' I get this error, which says the 'request has exceeded the allowable time limit'.. and this occurs on the line where weblogs.com is pinged. My posts do make it to the front page but I just get this error.

Someone reported the same error six months ago, but it appears to have started again..

Worst Car Modifications

The Worst Modified Cars in the UK. Car modification is becoming a way of life for all trendy 17-25 year olds. When you can't afford a decent off-the-shelf car, you can just turn your cheap wreck into a sporty glory! Or check out an American car with a WOODEN body kit! Alternatively, just check out the ugliest cars in Britain or LoserCars, the worst cars in the USA! (Found on uk.rec.driving)

One man's 'Daily Photo Project'

This guy takes a picture of himself every day. A guy takes a picture of himself every day and puts it online in a large montage. A moustache, braces, and mullet all creep in during the proceeds, only for him to now look much like he did when he started. (Found on design portal, NewsToday)

Fame Academy comes to an end.

David wins Fame Academy! Mix Big Brother with Pop/American Idol and you get the Fame Academy, where 12 gorgeous under-30s are thrown into a glorified stage school for a few months, and only one emerges an idol. The prize? Supposedly the 'biggest TV prize ever.' A £1 million recording contract, a fancy apartment in London, a personal shopper, chauffeur, and more. All is not lost for the 'losers' though, as they've all gained professional management and Mercury Records is considering them all for solo careers. In contrast to the 'Idol' shows, being couped up for weeks on end has caused even the wackiest contestants to grow in their singing and songwriting abilities. So will this show reach the US? Probably, given these other crossover shows.

Those Harry Potter Threads. Reading today's Harry Potter thread (now deleted) some people mentioned that the reason it was getting posted so much was because there is no previous record of it on a search, and that multiple similar posts had been deleted. Okay, repeated posts should be deleted, but why isn't the original one anywhere to be found? It's a bit Farkesque, but still not a bad link, per se.
