MeTa post: The kindness of MeFi.
If you're married or attached to a partner and have made the whole "death do us part" bit and promised to always stick together.. advice like "RUN NOW" is totally contrary to your mindset.

What a fun read! If I participated I guess I'd waste half of my life arguing with idiots too, but instead I'm going to watch TV.

Here's another spoiler.. at the end of Romeo and Juliet, they both die. Also, Jesus turns up in the Bible at the start of the New Testament. I have totally ruined those pieces of literature now. Ha!

MeTa post: MeFi loses.
You know.. I've always been convinced that PostSecret is fake. All the entries are way too similarly and 'arty' in nature. Perhaps it's just good editing, but I can't believe people constantly submit such arty entries. Sites like YouTube prove that people really aren't that talented in the mean.

MeTa post: Is it a serious faux-pas to suggest things or give...
Sometimes there are questions on AskMe which ask a question but then have a priviso in the "more inside" that says "No, I'm definitely not going to try [x]" or "Please don't suggest [y]". Is it wrong to pick up on these points and make suggestions on them even if you feel the original poster might have missed the point or be otherwise ill-informed?

The reason I ask is because it has come up a few times in the last few weeks for me. The... [more]

Maybe. Probably should tone down the superlatives a tad ;-) Still, I think it is cruel to restrict animals from their natural behavior, but, you have a point about cats.. people probably get more protective than usual (never deal with kids or pets, I'm guessing).

I do, however, think AskMe is a venue where we should challenge opinions and preheld conceptions, considering people are asking total strangers for suggestions so are likely on-the-fence.

Just wanted to add some weight to supporting this question. Sure, it might not be a great question, but not all questions on AskMe are. I'd argue it's better than many.. such as the recent "I know I'm leaving, but when should they know?"

You're not guaranteed the right to have children in any sense and you can certainly live a meaningful life without them. There are some things in life that I want that I will never get; that doesn't give me the right to overreact when someone mentions them or, worse yet, claim that I am entitled to them.

Like, say, sex, happiness, good health, or a decent diet. But, yes, if you can't ever have happiness, don't fret over it, it's only one thing in life.

I just wanna speak as a long time reader who now only reads the blue once every month or so.

I used to read the blue (and contribute, post, comment) every day. Multiple times a day. New stuff was coming through. It was cool, it was fun. Ever since around the time AskMe started.. MeFi Blue just started to fall off the radar. del.icio.us came into life, and suddenly I could see 101 interesting links, rather than 10 at a time. I could avoid politics, and spend my time doing... If matt isn't banning people by ip (which I believe he is), he should be.

I agree with Mitheral above; this is a bad idea. Not only do many of us use proxies (or AOL), even those with direct DSL or cable modem can simply reset their modem and get a new IP address (unless you paid extra for static).. so banning by IP is pretty pointless except for short term (hours) bans.

I'm sorry, but I think this is all very cool. It adds so much flavor to the site.

There was a hidden design community with a few thousand graphic designers (mostly swankarmy folks) a few years ago, and it was even more insane than this. Someone worked out you could link an entirely new stylesheet in a forum post, so you'd go to view a thread and the style sheet would change about 20 times. If you had epilepsy, you were screwed.

Matt, if possible, when you make your update, can you update FreeFilter's URL to http://www.bigbold.com/freefilter/ as I am planning to release an update sometime in the next few months, and that will be the final URL (works now). Ta! :)

BTW, gamesfilter used to be up and running, as I remember visiting it a few times. I believe it used FreeFilter initially, but possibly changed. Oh, and metaphilter seems to have disappeared too.

Oh well, I guess the time has come for a major policy decision to be made. Okay Internet.. here's the new rule to be added to the annals of netiquette!

If someone depraved and vile like 'picture of two men raping a goat up the crapflap' is going to be linked on the Internet, you must actually point out that a picture of two men raping a goat up the poop shoot might be considered offensive, and that it might not be safe for work, because there are some naive... Ever since the mefi clones came out, it's kind of taken away all the demand for my code anyway. Most of the clones are open source in some way, and anyone who wants to can extend those as far as they want.

That's true, but I don't think it's a worthwhile reason. I think that if there's a reason why open sourcing MetaFilter might not set the world on fire, it's due to ColdFusion.. I've nothing against the language, but very few people have the... [more]

Now I've read the whole thread again, I think I overstressed the CF thing a bit, when it's clearly been mentioned a couple of times there. Sorry, got caught up in my own chatter!
posted to MetaTalk by wackybrit at 6:54 PM on July 13, 2004
I think the whole ColdFusion "problem" is a little bit overstated. The developer's version of CF is free and reasonably priced hosting is available.

But many of the people who have the resources to get larger projects underway would have their own servers (or a larger hosting arrangement they are more than happy with), and would rather stick with Perl / PHP / Java, et al., rather than adopt a dying technology like CF. CF is... [more]

Perhaps I'm missing something, but there haven't been that many new members over the past couple of years (17000-17500 almost spans two years).. yet comments have climbed steadily. This must mean that the average MeFier is contributing a lot more than ever before. I wonder if this is due to the media exposure this site has been getting.

Thanks for that. My brain must have fallen out when I posted my comment. I got that the graph was total comments over time, but somehow reinterpreted it to think that commenting activity had gone up ;-)

A pub in a railway station? Strike me down if I'm wrong, but this seems unoriginal for an Internet meet ;-) (The nasty pub in Victoria station having been used for this purpose many a time.) Points for originality would go for a flashmeet.. everyone meets at a busy public place at 7.07pm, shout out 'PANCAKES!' and runs into the nearest pub. :-D

I don't get it, it's just a regular text box with some HTML source in for me.. but I'm using Safari. I'm not sure if WYSIWYG would be useful here, this is a site high on text and low on formatting. WYSIWYG would probably see this dynamic change, and not necessarily for the better.

This does give me an interesting idea though.. building a textarea which works in Flash, so it could provide WYSIWYG editing in all major browsers on all major platforms.. and since over 90% of... [more]

There seems to be some suggesting that Matt putting an ad up would detriment from everyone's enjoyment of the site. Wha? I personally find the 'register to vote' link more jarring than if there were an ad for Web hosting or something in the spot.

That's an interesting history lesson, as the USA fought to get rid of Europe at any cost.

Clearly you didn't learn any history then. Sure, the USA did that, but WAY after Europe colonized North America (i.e. 200 years after). The person you were responding to was correct, Europe did, effectively, 'build the US'.
