In many old houses once you break through the lath-and-plaster (or it breaks on you and you need to repair it) there is a disgusting amount of "coal dust" that comes out. Where do these carbon particles come from?
Yes old houses used to be heated with coal. But I assume the furnaces had chimneys to vent the combustion products. So why is there so much dust within walls and ceilings?

For over a decade I have homed at a Mom&Pop ISP. They used to be good but now they are having frequent outages and seem to be soon to expire.
I guess I should move my email identitie(s) somewhere else but what is the best way?

Any way to search for English web pages that contain specific Chinese characters? For example in Google when I set my preference to English pages only and then search for
Huamei with the characters
话梅, I get mostly all Chinese pages.

Should the MeFi complex permanently cache links? Is it legal?
I recently desired to access some link I had added as a comment. My
comment included a link to a PDF of testicle size. However when I now follow the chain the PDF has been removed.
Why was it removed? Either because the link became so popular that somebody figured they could make money off of it, maybe generated by my linking to it, or because of space limitations or reorganizations on the server. Anyway the link and its content have now evaporated and only maybe can I find a new link to it.
The cost/gigabite is now so low that it seems the MeFi complex could cache every link added. As long as the cache was not exposed to the outside to allow google searches (and similar traffic).
If some linked page was once put in the public domain does that mean that once it is removed it is no longer in the public domain?

Bill O'Reilly respondsYouTube
to a
8 year oldYouTube (though he leaves out her saying "that idiot O'Reilly"). Bill and his "expert"
Wendy Murphy (who claims that the ACLU supports child sex abuse) agree that the girl's performance is child abuse - "the ultimate inhumane treatment of a child". Murphy goes on to highlight the danger possibility of "some [religious] nut [who] wants to hunt this family down." The
many comments at YouTube illustrate this point – while some are supportive, others call her a slut, and Tanzman6
(who has belonged to Right to Life and Peer Ministry clubs) says
"This little chink should shut the fuck up. We should have killed her parents in Viet Nam when we had the fucking chance. Burn the bitch."
While the child obviously had help with her material, is O'Reilly right that statements like "religion has caused the genocide of nations" is propaganda about which she understands nothing? Even after considering that she is Lakota (Sioux) and probably related to Greg Zephier, an American Indian Movement Leader?

I run a
Greasemonkey script that highlights "heavy links" - links such a Youtube or .mov that might take a while to download.
Should this script action be incorporated into the meta universe?
Proper etiquitte is to flag such heavy links but if you Firefox users install this script and say look at
posts tagged with video, you will see many examples of posters who bother to tag their posts but don't flag their links. Then there are many who don’t tag or flag.
Even if you don't support such highlighting at the site (It will just make people lazy), how are my filters? What else do I need to include? [jeez, trying to get the below to display properly was very trying]
HeavyExtensions = ['swf', 'ram', 'rm', 'wmv', 'asx', 'mov', 'pdf', 'mp3', 'mpg', 'mpeg', 'wav'];
HeavyURLs = [
/youtube.com\/.*\?v=/,
/video.google.com\/videoplay/,
/video.google.com\/googleplayer.swf/,
/collegehumor.com\/movies\/.*\//,
]

CU police offer $50 bounty to identify maybe pot smokers.
"Every year on 4/20, students and residents gather on Farrand Field at CU Boulder to defy the authorities and smoke marijuana publicly. This year, the University of Boulder Police Department fought back by taking pictures of as many participants as possible. They have a website with photos up, offering an $50 reward to anyone who positively identifies someone who was photographed." via BoingBoing
Here are 3 local news stories about it:
1,
2,
3.
I guess the police want to identify people even if they were not visalby commiting a crime, just so they can bring them in and apply pressure root out the real criminals.
Colorado is home to James Dobson's hyper right-wing
Focus on the Family. But Denver and in the west of that state appear to be one of the largest
marijuana usage areas in the country (scroll down a bit)
This area seems radically divided. When my family recently visited Colorado Springs we found it very right-wing but when we engaged a rubber boat trip through the Royal George all of our guides were hippie/eco/stoners.
Can anybody explain this in terms of the obvious factions?

Matt, can you add some more class to your comment HTML so that independent scripts such as my
Comment script and
MeFi Navigator have a more assured chance of cohabitating? [by a fluke there turned out to be no fatal interactions]
Also, the best way to quote comments is with a DIV. Can you make this possible? [more inside]

In
this photo, does anybody know what these bicycle riders are transporting in the giant sausages? Does the Russian caption (which I don't read) explain it?
