Ah!
Brilliance of the world
Changing every

Every second every
Frightened moment

Heisenberg's uncertainty principle.
I really like it: you either know how fast you're going, or
Just where you are. But you'll never
Know both.

Projects post: Electicker 2008 | your election fix on one...
I've added Sam Wang (Princeton Election Consortium). Sadly, FiveThirtyEight doesn't provide its electoral projections in text (or any machine-readable) format (images only), nor does Pollster (only Flash).

All headers now have mouseovers.

Also, I managed to add FiveThirtyEight after all through the power of magic.

MeTa post: The 2008 MetaFilter election prediction contest
Minnesota - O (Pollster lists this as close?)

Yes.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves: not every development follows the greater trend. I too believe Obama has a significantly better chance to win MN than McCain, but there is at least some basis in numbers to still consider it a close state.... [more]

MeFi post: Palin, pancakes, and the straight talk express
Of all the discussion-worthy, interesting things that could be said about the election as it stands the single most important one by far, IMO, is what five fresh fish said:

Get Out The Vote.

It's not just a slogan, people. If you as a people, as a nation can manage to get as many people as possible to simply tick a box, press a button, all these students in Virginia who are being misled into believing they cannot register to... [more]

In the interest of truth and fairness:

-Biden did mention Palin today, multiple times in fact.
-And I don't agree that polling has been "not too bad" for Obama since the conventions. I'm not a doomsayer and I expect the numbers to pick up in the coming weeks as well, but when you're seeing a negative spread in Ohio, double-digit GOP advantages in strategically useful wildcard states like MT and NC, and Obama up by only 5 in New freaking... McCain Forgot to Tell His Webmaster About the Suspension

“The difference between Barack Obama and John McCain was apparent during the White House meeting yesterday where Barack Obama picked his nose and smelled strongly of hope,” said the McCain campaign statement.

“John McCain listened to all sides because he is awesome but also a bit tired. The Democratic interests stood together in opposition to an agreement that would accommodate hugs and great things.”

Ask post: Screw Chevy Chase
I've always lobbied for Rotterdam. It's an hour-long train ride from Amsterdam, and also its polar opposite. Rotterdam was bombed to pieces in the war and is now a mecca of modern architecture and art (modern museums, street art, etc.) considered much more down-to-earth than the more hifalutin Amsterdam. Definitely worth a visit.

Yeah, even Broken Social Scene. I saw them in Utrecht and there were like twenty people there.

I keep being amazed by how it's possible that guys like these haul all their stuff across an ocean to come play for us and the band makes up like 25% of the people in the venue, whereas in my mind they're totally famous.

speug, the item is a pre-historic stone tool. [...] The explanation is in Dutch but I think it says that it's a multi-function tool of stone.

Quick & dirty translation:

"The biface was the multifunctional tool of the early Stone Age. It was suited for felling, slaughter and skinning. It is one of the oldest man-made tools found in the Netherlands."

And in nickyskye's earlier link:

"The Netherlands in prehistory

Objects from prehistoric times have been found in every province of the Netherlands. The oldest objects in the presentation "The Netherlands in prehistory" are 250,000 year old chert [flint] tools. Bronze and stone axes, a mysterious wooden figurine, a 6200 year old fish trap and beautiful amber and golden tools bring to life this era.... [more]

I was born in 1981, and I remember buying these from a Dutch petrol station in the mid-to-late eighties.

I never quite understood it was a Cabbage Patch Kids parody until I read it on Metafilter in the mid-to-late two-thousand-naughts.
