MeFi post: Palin, pancakes, and the straight talk express
Of all the discussion-worthy, interesting things that could be said about the election as it stands the single most important one by far, IMO, is what five fresh fish said:

Get Out The Vote.

It's not just a slogan, people. If you as a people, as a nation can manage to get as many people as possible to simply tick a box, press a button, all these students in Virginia who are being misled into believing they cannot register to... [more]

In the interest of truth and fairness:

-Biden did mention Palin today, multiple times in fact.
-And I don't agree that polling has been "not too bad" for Obama since the conventions. I'm not a doomsayer and I expect the numbers to pick up in the coming weeks as well, but when you're seeing a negative spread in Ohio, double-digit GOP advantages in strategically useful wildcard states like MT and NC, and Obama up by only 5 in New freaking... “The difference between Barack Obama and John McCain was apparent during the White House meeting yesterday where Barack Obama picked his nose and smelled strongly of hope,” said the McCain campaign statement.

“John McCain listened to all sides because he is awesome but also a bit tired. The Democratic interests stood together in opposition to an agreement that would accommodate hugs and great things.”

MeFi post: Venetian Flair
Yeah, even Broken Social Scene. I saw them in Utrecht and there were like twenty people there.

I keep being amazed by how it's possible that guys like these haul all their stuff across an ocean to come play for us and the band makes up like 25% of the people in the venue, whereas in my mind they're totally famous.

speug, the item is a pre-historic stone tool. [...] The explanation is in Dutch but I think it says that it's a multi-function tool of stone.

Quick & dirty translation:

"The biface was the multifunctional tool of the early Stone Age. It was suited for felling, slaughter and skinning. It is one of the oldest man-made tools found in the Netherlands."

And in nickyskye's earlier link:

"The Netherlands in prehistory

Objects from prehistoric times have been found in every province of the Netherlands. The oldest objects in the presentation "The Netherlands in prehistory" are 250,000 year old chert [flint] tools. Bronze and stone axes, a mysterious wooden figurine, a 6200 year old fish trap and beautiful amber and golden tools bring to life this era.... [more]

MeFi post: Sarah Palin as McCain's running-mate
kaibutsu, to be fair, this is the first time we have these late, back-to-back conventions, both with running mates announced a few days beforehand. What this means right now is that Obama's suggested bounce hasn't rolled out of the tracking poll data yet -- but will do so today.

I for one will not be surprised if McCain is somewhere between -1 to +4 in the Gallup and Rasmussen tracking polls by tomorrow or Tuesday, with the RCP average again a... [more]

sondrialac:
You're confusing the republican leadership with the people who identify themselves as Republican, who are mostly good people with a different point of view.

QFT. Really, this more perfect union of yours will never come to pass if you (and we) keep hanging onto us & them politics. Or where do you think this Unity Senator Obama speaks of will come from? Out of (further) left field?

Sorry, carry on.

Has she spoken with the press at all since the pick was announced? If so, we can just do a clock that starts at that point and counts upward, Fox News-style.

So ABC interviews the Republican candidate for Vice President of the United States in the 2008 election, and she waffles on what the "Bush doctrine" is. Now, how does one report this?Palin agreed in principle to the "Bush doctrine," the idea that the United States has the right to preemptively strike those another country the U.S. think will attack first. My comment about this? The non-print, multiple-page version has the comments.

Excerpt:"You've got a great ass, but your tits are too small, frankly," [the madam] observes. "I mean, I'm sure you have no trouble getting dates, but the girls will tell you, men love breasts." Then she adds decisively, "I'm thinking $950 an hour."
