MeTa post: Mighty Mighty Wellington Meetup
I somehow failed to respond to this till now.

Good!

But....I am working till possibly 7.30, and may also have to be home after that to sort out someone who is picking up some furniture. So it's not looking too good for an early meetup, I'm afraid. I'll try to get down there, anyway.

I was about to ask how I shall know you; but the bunny ears should work :D

I'm going to be in JJ Murphy's because my girlfriend scheduled a meetup of her friends there at the same time. So that's an option? Or Good Luck maybe?

Good to meet you guys; glad you were still there when I got down there late. Thanks for organising this, ambilevous.

MeTa post: Free Short Stack
Why would an "International" House of Pancakes hold a "National" Pancake Day?

Same sort of reason as they have a "World" Series with only American teams?

MeTa post: Holiday gratuities/gratuitous for our beloved admins?
I can say that to my knowledge jessamyn doesn't own a liquor store, but I'd put money on her owning Ramones records.

If so, she must have 'em on vinyl, because they're not showing up on her last.fm profile.

[Not crazed stalker; I just like the Ramones]

MeTa post: Chelsea headhunter.
And if he did it again this year he'd have slit his wrists.

Early days; Spurs will turn out fine. I agree with your Everton recommendation, too. One pretty much can't choose to cheer for any of the big four (Liverpool are a no-go, they're basically the Yankees on a short-term losing streak). Manchester City and Portsmouth are out because they're funded by rich creepy and possibly corrupt foreigners. Supporting Derby would be masochism.... [more]

MeTa post: I have a humour imbalance - know any good bloodletters in the Denver area?
That the poster is buying a gift certificate for a friend suggests pretty strongly to me that they aren't going into this in search of spiritual guidance or investment advice. Just as there's nothing in the question disclaiming belief in the powers of psychics, there's nothing in the question suggesting that this is anything but a lark for a friend. That gate swings both ways. (similar comments made several times by Cortex and Jessamyn).

It seems to... [more]

MeTa post: BookFilter?
And fuck WorldCat until it starts finding ways to give discounted membership to libraries in rural noplace and stops telling me that the "nearest" copy of the Da Vinci Code is in the next state.

Heh, it's telling me that the nearest library copy of the public library books sitting on my desk are actually in California (which is a whole ocean away from me). Do I win?

MeTa post: MeFi Poker, June 10th 9pm Eastern
(1) we should do this more often, and (2) more of you oughtta join in. It's great fun.

Personally, I'd love to, but holding it on Sunday US time makes it pretty much impossible for those of us in Australia/NZ (the game was at Monday 1pm my time, so of course I was at work).

If you can get a game going on Saturday (US time), I'm definitely in. (I accept that holding it on a Saturday might mean fewer North Americans play, and... [more]

I'd be up for a Saturday afternoon game. I'm out of town for the next two Saturdays, but after that, I'm in.
I have accounts at Absolute, Full Tilt, PokerStars and Bodog (but I only have money on the Absolute account).

MeTa post: WTF is up with the "blame the U.S....
I thought in the UK the word "liberal" referred to free market capitalist types..

At the risk of getting off-topic, I think it can have both meanings. Certainly here in New Zealand it does (c.f. the ACT party and the Institute for Liberal Values.

On-topic, I mostly agree with Dhoyt. Interesting to note that several of those threads contain snarking of the opposite kind - e.g. comments about how "all the natural... [more]

Yeah, all right, but what if we want to rate the pony? How do we do that?

MeTa post: Mefi Librarian Call-Out? I'm tickled by the...
dash_slot: a lot of librarians would agree with those platforms (and certainly the first one) as well.

I'm trained as a librarian though not currently working as one. Will be going back to it in a couple of years (special or maybe academic library).

goofyfoot: I read the obvious ones: Library Stuff, The Shifted Librarian, Walking Paper, MamaMusings, LISNews.com, and Librarian.net (the last two both run by MeFi members). Phil Bradley and the Young Librarian are both good, too.

For light relief I like the Gay Librarian and Bizgirl (who doesn't actually exist, but is a figment of the imagination of a male blogger - which didn't stop her winning 'best personal blog' at a recent New Zealand awards).... [more]
