Subglacial Lake Vostok
If the drilling over Vostok had continued uninterrupted, thereby encroaching upon the liquid portion of the lake, the hapless Russians might have been assaulted by a towering geyser of ancient water and liberated oxygen 1 due to the astonishing pressure of the hidden body of water.
1. And kerosene and freon.

I was privy to something down and dirty.
If you're not an archaeologist, just leave this shit alone.
What is an archaeologist going to find that is more important than the (seemingly) well-documented discoveries these collectors are making? That argument reeks of the sort of expert-privileging so prevalent in academia - as though a "trained" archaeologist has more of a "right" to that material than a collector, who may have as much experience dealing with these materials... Quite the comeback
You poor fool. Who do you think covers scholarships and tution credits for your fancy college education? It's not the poor, hardworking college students shelling out their hard-earned pay for tuition, nor is it the over-burdened taxpayers of your state. It's your much-loathed texas football and basketball teams which attracts the donations of alumni.

I was really hoping this turned out to be a self-link so that someone would have to burn in a fire of ban-hammering.

Peak Performance
This site reads much like the 'OMG GET HUGE NOW' sites which are advertising shills for "performance boosting" shakes. It may be the annoying pop ups and the SpecialAdvertisingSection-esque language, but this seems awfully pepsi-blue to me.

snoktruix, i think someone switched your MeFi bookmark for your fark bookmark. Please check and repair accordingly.

max/msp is another good tool for this, and has a 30 day free trial. the environment isn't the most user friendly interface in the world but decent tutorials abound.

This happens to me when i've been (consistently) drinking more caffeine than normal, where normal is one 8 oz cup of coffee per day. I find that cutting back on caffeine and getting more sleep generally disappears the problem.

Delivering Genuine, Raw Fetish Since 1997!
I lived about a block from the Cranston Street Armory and everyone I knew in providence used to fantasize about finding a way in. Photos don't help to appreciate the scale of that building - it is at least a city block long, and perhaps half a block wide. MASSIVE. PROVIDENCE MASSIVE.

Paul clearly won. And I understand what mogabog is saying, even if i don't agree with the sentiment. There is often a large overlap between FPP on digg and FPP here. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I could see where it might raise some hackles.

Getting Around LA
gasp! mzurer! i had the opposite experience, also as a runner. i LOVED the thomas guides, but NEVER left to go anywhere without mapquesting. the thomas guide, however, is indispensible if you are lost.
know where you are trying to go. for example - if you are heading to an In 'n Out, make sure you know what city it's in. Calling directory assistance and asking for the address of the In 'n Out on Santa Monica Blvd. in Los Angeles isn't going to help you at all, because... [more]
