MeFi post: On Having A Black Name
No doubt people associate race with certain names. I have a black friend whose given name is one of those. He legally changed it to Benjamin because he didn't feel he was taken seriously when using his original given name

MeFi post: Because buying new is for suckers.
My favorite was a 1982 323i I bought in 89 and drove until a tree feel on it in 1990. It was as rock solid at 18 years as it was when I got it and was as durable as the 320i and 318i from the era, but had the added boost of a 6 cylinder.

MeFi post: With A Little Help From Their Friends
Heh. If you watch That's the Way God Planned and look behind Billy Preston there is a guy singing back up wearing a cowboy-like hat. That guy is my kid's grandfather (ex-wife's father). I knew he'd been involved but never took the time to check for videos.

MeFi post: Is anyone even shocked at this point?
Accusing someone of splitting hairs in a discussion about the law is laughable. The law is all about splitting hairs.

I don't see anywhere where dios has said that he supports what the DoJ is accused of doing or that he thinks what they are accused of doing would be a great idea. All he said was he doesn't think they violated the Hatch Act. Based on what I've seen on the subject I agree or would at least say you'd have a damned hard time proving that they did. For some... A DAO-12 is basically just a 12 gauge shotgun that will hold 12 rounds. I believe this is a version of the same gun manufactured in the US. If I'm not mistaken only the versions with barrels less than 18 inches would require any sort of special permit under Federal law.

MeFi post: Guess who's building nuclear power plants
In the 70s Boston Edison ran an ad saying that a nuclear power plant in Iran was a good idea (I'm guessing because they wanted to do the same thing). In 2007 the US government says this is a bad idea. How is that hypocrisy? The Bush administration may be full of hypocrites but I don't see the connection unless Boston Edison is part of the administration. Was it hypocrisy that some US industrialists thought the Nazis were a-okay but the US later went to war against them?

The first link to the copy accompanied by the photo of the Shah is a Boston Edison advertisement. Look at the small print at the bottom.

MeFi post: Reliability vs. the Status Quo
As the owner of a Colt AR15, I was going to come in here and share my great wisdom by telling everyone that I've never cared for it because it tends to jam. Now I am reminded that there are a good number of community members that not only have a great deal more experience with such weapons but that actually have more than a vague understanding of how they work. I shoot on occasion and own a number of firearms but my depth of knowledge doesn't go much further than "the firing pin hits the... [more]

Tacos are pretty great: Jonmc doesn't need me to defend him but he didn't say anything of the sort. I think what he said was more to the effect of, when you do something that annoying you shouldn't be surprised if someone reacts with violence.

I agree. If you provoke someone and they kick your ass I wouldn't have a lot of sympathy for you. I'm not saying it would be right to kick your ass but I believe the provoker bears some responsibility for putting their self in... [more]

MeFi post: Father Drinan dead at 86
He spoke during the Ethics sections at a couple of CLE courses I took at Georgetown in the late 90s. I was thoroughly impressed by his presentations. In fact, so much so that I still recognized his name when I saw it in the FPP. Until this moment I hadn't realize that he was anything more than a Jesuit/law professor. Wow. Guess I should have spent a little more time looking over the presenters' bios.

MeFi post: Is soccer un-american?
Yep. I'd say a good number of the commenter's failed to read the entire article.

"I read all 8 pages, and the reasoning is basically that he doesn't want to piss off the xenophobic American-born residents..."

That was the mayor's reason for not unilaterally allowing them to use the field initially but when the coach came to him to complain he recommended that she take it to the city counsel which approved their use... [more]

Bardic: I wasn't so much defending the guy as indicating that people were either not reading the entire article or reading things into it that, as far as I could see, just weren't there. I read a good number of comments before I read the article and was expecting to read that the mayor had completely denied the possibility that they could ever use the field and that the residents of the city were actively persecuting the coach and players. That was not what the article said. Hell, the YMCA came... [more]

MeFi post: New Orleans levies
Every hurricane season as a child I remember hearing people talking about fearing that exactly what happened during Katrina was going to happen that year to those same levees. I specifically remember hearing it at age 9 when Camile was headed our way in 1969.

This wasn't a new problem. That doesn't excuse Bush but it also doesn't excuse many prior federal administrations.

I live in SUV land. The reason I most often hear from SUV owners for driving them is that they like being up high. I hate the MFers because I can't see anything when I get behind or beside one. Makes me wonder if some people aren't buying them so they can see over the ones that are already on the road.

MeFi post: They Don't Call It South Jersey for Nothing
I very proud of my southern heritage and the confederate flag means anything but racism to me. I would never wear or display one because I realize it does, understandably, mean exactly that to others. I also don't like seeing it appropriated by groups/individuals who display it because they know it has that effect. It makes me sad but I think displaying it, even simply out of a sense of southern pride, is just damned insensitive.
posted to MetaFilter by Carbolic at 9:27 AM on July 14, 2006
The "Bonnie Blue" has often been suggested as a replacement for the purpose of celebrating southern pride. (As a decendent of citizens of the Republic of West Florida I kind of like the idea).
posted to MetaFilter by Carbolic at 9:38 AM on July 14, 2006
It's a hard thing to explain. As a southerner seeing the Confederate battle flag flown in certain settings/situations can bring a tear to my eye but so can hearing MLK delivering the I Have a Dream speech. The flag doesn't symbolize racism to me but I fully understand why it would to others so I don't display it or, as far as I know, even possess anything that does.

MeFi post: "Hate is too great a burden to bear. It injures the hater more than it injures the hated." - Coretta Scott King.
If you want to label the founding fathers as liberal according to how it is defined today remember that LBJ (the president when MLK was being bugged) was a democrat. Neither of yesterday's labels are accurate today. Besides tha,t most of the preceding comments are a load of horseshit. MLK and Coretta have meant a whole lot more to this country than what petty bullshit happened at the funeral. This and all discussions like it minimize their importance.

Because the conditions in some of the hardest hit neighborhoods were so poor even before the hurricanes some also suspect that a number of those who left will have no desire to return. If you have ever been in some of the neighborhoods behind the French Quarter, just north of Rampart St., you'd understand why. Relocation to any place outside of the worst third world slum would be an improvement.
