WFMU's Free Music Archive
Can't I already do this with Last.fm? I guess I can't download...is that the difference?
Mostly it has to do with copyright and licensing - you couldn't legally use a track from Last.fm in one of your podcasts or play it in your place of business or on your streaming radio station without several royalty rights organizations demanding some money from you for that use. (<axegrind>These are the same orgs often keep a lot of those fees for... [more]

Everyone's angry, it seems
I wonder if this really is what modern journalism is like
I'm going to shamelessly rip off William Gibson and Pattern Recognition here because the quote always reminded me of journalism: a species of depression engendered by too long and too closely observing the human soul from certain predictable but basically unnatural angles.
And to rip him off twice: It's sort of traditional to let them drink themselves to death.

The Dyatlov Pass Mystery
Back in the 60's the CIA was putting nuclear-powered listening posts up on mountains in India, on Nanda Devi (well, trying to and failing. Fascinating story all on its own.)
Perhaps these climbers stumbled onto a pre-flight of the same program. Would explain the secrecy, the radiation, the location, coverup, etc.... [more]

The "Admiral's" Notebook
I've been furiously meditating on how we can drag the RIAA into this fight and make it a 3-way 'net implosion for the BEST YEAR EVAR.
So here's a question: do you think the CoS paid for the performance rights to that Mission Impossible bassline they use in their leaked Tom Cruise promo video?

the idea that ALL of the people she's named are all working together to sell nuclear secrets to the highest bidder
As the post details points out - she has only posted some photos - other folks are playing the name game - but her allegations cover more than just the nuke aspects (narcotics, arms sales, FBI misconduct, etc.) So, no, all 9 aren't likely nuke salesmen.

Life Imitates Satire
Standard practice here in New Zealand. The radio stations fill out forms listing every song they played, and the fees get divided up on a pro rata basis, to each artist. But they only record songs for one week every few months (maybe one per year).
Same thing here, actually. But the collections organization was created by the RIAA, and is staffed with its refugees.
Also, they don't have to tell anybody about if... [more]

I doubt anyone is going to end up feeling good about the results.
Then again, if public outrage forcibly removes them from their home at great financial loss, causes great mental anguish, invites retribution, stains their family name, and follows their family and children for all eternity ... hey, works for me. I'd feel pretty good about that.

Congress killed the Radio Star
It's worth noting that lost in the battle over the rate increase are the insanely difficult reporting requirements also mandated by SoundExchange as part of this decision.
They are so convoluted (and in certain cases actually impossible to implement) that a vast majority of stations are completely incapable of meeting them without throwing out all their equipment and buying a new automation system.
Can't submit the reports? Guess what!... [more]

What is "unfair" about that?
Mostly that it lets S.E. dictate how stations across the country run their business. They've legislated themselves into the position, sure, but it doesn't mean that stations have to like it.
Most college stations went from a $250 SWSA rate to the $500/year rate - but there are indeed those out there that are gonna hit that 146k ATH cap. Probably more than you think.... [more]

If your institutions enrollment went from under 10,000 in 2004, to over 10,000 now, you'd see an "increase" to $500.
Is there some sort of post-CRB decision or offer on the table from SE that supercedes these mimimums in the CRB's determination? Because the minimums laid out in there say $500, regardless of the enrollment.
SE's own press release also reiterates this $500 min. So if there's some sort of stipulation... [more]

Interesting - so it's in the works/negotiations but not a done deal. For the stations that were already invoiced and paid for the $500 rate, it'll be interesting to see how that gets dealt with if they knock it back.
down to the possibility that a few Internet radio stations that are clearly providing commercial level services are going to be inconvenienced
The argument's much larger than that - but yes, if you've got to stick... [more]

How the fuck do they have the right to collect money for my work with a ... band?
Easy! The RIAA previously argued to the same Copyright Royalty Board that they were the best ones to do so, and then spun off the 'independent' SoundExchange to do it for them. (And staffed it with their people, natch.)
If you want an illustrated guide to the mess artists are in, run your band's name through the SoundExchange PLAYS database and... [more]

Only if you could get that entity tapped by the CRB as also having/sharing the official responsibility for royalty collection and disbursement.
Others have brought this single-entity problem up again and again - back in 2001 when SE was tapped in the first place, and again during the recent CRB rate hike talks. You can read some of how this played out in the... [more]
