mathowie is going to ROFL(con)

Look who's going to ROFLcon! It's a "a group dissection of internet culture" and "big blowout party" in Cambridge, MA, April 25th and 26th that promoters call "the most important gathering since the fall of the tower of Babel" (and possibly just as productive). Wish I could be there.

One-link, one-or-two-word MeFi posts bugging you? We've had a few lately. Maybe it would help to display the tags on the front page.

Halfway to Our First Million on MetaTalk

Congratulations to tkolar on posting MetaTalk's 500,000th comment! Imagine, a half million assorted snarks, whines, callouts, flameouts, bugfixes, meetup setups, not to mention all the pony requests granted or rejected, the longboat voyages, the real-life detective stories and serious discussion of male and female body parts. What a long Meta trip it's been.

Always. ALWAYS Filter.

Matt, I have waited several hours for you to fix it, but the song parody you linked to in the Blue Sidebar is titled "Thou Shalt Always Filter", not "Thou Shalt Not Filter". And it is totally awesome... When I say “end” thou shalt not say “well”. When I say “Wen” thou shalt not say “dell”.

Tame the Tags Blob!

The Front Page Posting page shows a big blob listing ALL the tags I have used on previous posts. Particularly big because I have made 199 posts on at least 175 different topics, including high-tech band-aids (an early NewsFilter with 2 now-dead links), a-list blogs, MetaFilter-related stuff before MetaTalk existed (this post features jessamyn making a suggestion to create something like MetaTalk) Interpol, Steely Dan, ICANN, and Fat People (without a trainwreck in the comments!)... and that was all in my first month participating here. Anyway, that tag blob, as it now exists, does me no benefit and just blocks the way to the "Preview" button. Can we have options to show NO tags or most used tags or tags used more than once ple-e-e-eze?

MeFi ReCurrents

An Immodest Proposal: One of the interesting phenomena I've noticed as other aggregating sites are on their ascendancy (can you Digg it?) is that many links that had been MetaFiltered long ago (in Web time) get a new wave of attention, which flows back around here, and BANG! Double-triple-quadruple post!. And how many times lately have we seen comments like "Didn't see it the first time; glad it was reposted"? Maybe what we need is a separate place for "Re-Current" posts or links, where we can acknowledge that WE got it months/years ago, and re-open comments on it. Obviously, such a sub-Meta would require a lot of moderation/maintenance, and maybe it should be an off-site project. How should it work? Can we/you make it work? Why bother? Any volunteers?

GoreFilter?

Are we gonna keep the "latest attempt to smear Gore" post on the front page just because it gets successfully refuted later in the thread? Or in the interest of being "Fair and Balanced", should Gore Bashing be kept equivalent to Bush Bashing?

I don't usually call out bad posts in MeTa, but a Single Link Op Ed (to the WSJ OpJournal, no less) by the author of the classic racist screed "The Bell Curve" (though I Foody may disagree) which is a classic of "stating the obvious" ("Half of all children are below average... except in Lake Wobegon") is NOT the Best of the Web. It's not even worthy of me making a smart ass comment in the thread. Delete with extreme prejudice, mattamyn.

I don't mean to "out" anybody...

I don't mean to "out" anybody journalistically, but having recently joined the MetaFun here "after four years of looking around", "a-list blogger" and editor of Gawker Media's Sploid* Ken Layne has made a MetaFilter Front Page Post into Sploid's big-dropshadow-headlined** lead story. Of course the story is Dunvegan's post on the Naeem Kahn affair, which I personally consider the best thing on MeFi since we stopped playing that "Blogstop" game. Yeah, let's keep making Ken's job easy... If we can get one of these for every hundred average "NewsFilters", I'll accept that tradeoff.
*which is the only Gawker site I regularly visit, sorry dong.
**actually, my favorite thing about Sploid is how they do the tabloid-ish headlines using just the Impact font and some sneaky CSS, but I digress...

Disclaimer: This is something you need a TV to know about...
Has anybody but me seen a commercial for Volkswagen (apparently SoCal VW Dealers, but maybe showing in other regions) in which the salesman outside the car is pointing out all the comfort features to the wife in the driver's seat while the husband on the passenger's side is just using the power seat to go up and down and up and down? You'd know it if you saw it, because the actor playing the husband is (to me) a dead ringer for Matt Haughey (including the glasses). I can't find a video of that commercial online anywhere, but I wonder if some actor is going to make a career out of impersonating Our #1... (Or is the resemblence just another sign of my worsening dementia?) Dammit, they are the same glasses!!!

One of the most questionable trends emerging at...

One of the most questionable trends emerging at MeFi lately is the MetaTalk treads complaining about post deletions, linking directly to the 'hidden' threads (effectively un-hiding them), where the usually awful discussions cut off by the Hand of Mathowie get a chance to continue raging in the Grey.

Maybe the way Matt deletes threads needs to be changed. Maybe closing discussions gone bad early instead of deleting. Maybe deleted threads on the blue need to completely disappear, like on the green & grey. How about adding to the posting page, a list of the most recent deletions with Matt's reasons for deletion (Hey, that might prevent triple-double-posts). Any other better suggestions for implimenting the FPP Death Penalty?

MetaMystery: Something was funny about the FP (Front Page) of MeFi for me today: the date stamps on all the FPPs (Front Page Posts) were in Mountain Time (UTC-7) instead of the time zone I had specified, Pacific (UTC-8). Was that some Daylight/Standard time thing happening or did somebody figure out my password and change my specs? If so, please disregard any comments posted in my name so far today. Or is this really me posting this in MeTa? I get so confused.

We know that nofundy usually posts about...

We know that nofundy usually posts about "Fundies", hama7 has posted Hama-Net, and Vidiot's first post was about TV newscasts, but hasn't the relationship between posts and the posters' usernames gotten a little strange lately?

First, I saw Keyser Soze's AskMe about "my friend getting busted by the cops" and its MetaTalk follow-up. But then I noticed posts from PenDevil about rewriting the Chinese Constitution, Dome-O-Rama about an Act of Congress, psychotic venom about these depressing times, loquacious about Rumsfeld's words, ferociouskitty about howwasshe.com, and four panels about China's Building Blitz.

And AskMe has a problem with the French from staggernation and a mouse in a messy room from Slimemonster.

Am I just going overboard when I see the connections between a car insurance site and mr crash davis, Jay-Z and soundofsuburbia, or Sudden Oak Death and barkle (oops, that should be bargle) ? If so, just say "adjust your meds, Wendell", and we'll leave it at that. If not, I'll be back tonight with a post about Wendell Willkie.

My semi-pathetic lifestyle has required me to do a lot of my web-surfing (and blog-writing) from computers at the L.A. Public Libraries, and just a few minutes ago I sat down at a machine I had last used about a week ago, went to MetaFilter and was greeted with "you are logged in as wendell". Looks like I've been bitten by the MeFi Cookie Monster (persistant little bugger).
So, if you've seen any comments under my name in the last week that sound like they were written by a nine-year-old... it's probably still me. But at least it's a better alibi than "I was out fishing on Christmas".
Is there any way to avoid this problem (besides remembering to log out)?

Is MetaFilter starting down that slippery slope toward Theme Days (like on The Mickey Mouse Club)?
October 15th examples: We started the day with regrets and apologies, got playful with Hello Kitty, Fisher-Price and double Legos, and then it got ugly: bad wedding dresses, worse plastic surgery, nazi architecture, a nazi dog, a dinosaur frog, finishing up with maggots. Am I the only one seeing a pattern here?
And does this mean today will be Fun With Music Day? (Miguel, you jumped the gun)

I should know this, being one of MeFi's last surviving "early adopters" (user #206), but I don't...
MetaFilter's NO multiple-threads, chronological order, NO sigs or avatars, permalinked format for comment pages has become the standard default style for blog comments, used by most blog software out there. (And that format has been, with all its abuses, one of the major reasons why MeFi has been my favorite Web Hangout for most of its 4 years).
So, Matt, why is it so? Did you duplicate some even earlier weblog pioneer I don't remember? Did you just follow a K.I.S.S. methodology? Or was it all/partly about the limitations in the Cold Fusion database or your then-newbie abilities with it? Tell me, for the record, how much credit (or blame) do you think you deserve for "The Way We Do Comments"?

Now we know for sure, as the legendary/infamous Blogstop/Acronyms thread goes into "overtime": The cutoff for comments to a MeFi thread is one calendar month, not thirty days. (I'm surprised nobody noticed AND complained last February...)
I'm sorry, but I have loved this thread, textual chain-jerkoff it may have been, and await the dropping of the MetaFilter equivalent of the Times Square New Year's Ball on our collective heads in less than eight hours as I stand like a cryogenically-preserved Dick Clark preparing to be resuscitated just in time to say: "Five...Four..."
So, as long as I've committed myself to a verbal thrashing from the Anti-Acronymatics among you, I must still ask the stupid question: "Why Can't MetaFilter Do Something Like This More Often?"

Think the only thing...

Think the only thing "MetaFilter-related" about The Echo Project is that it's a reason for Dave Winer to have another FPP-level hissy fit? Well, since copyright conflicts won't allow the developers behind "Echo" to call it "Echo", they're putting out a call for alternate names, and one of the most popular proposals so far is MetaPub. Is this infringement on the MetaFilter name? Will this cause future confusion among the already easily confused? Is this something that this Meta Community should take a stand on?
BTW, other popular names: Necho (as in Not Echo), Spark and Lokahi (obscure Hawaiian term). A couple folks are also pushing MetaVox.
