Ask post: career options?
You might check out the UT Distance Education Center. They create and run UT's online courses. A teaching background is helpful, but a lot of the work is tech related. I was hired there a few years ago to edit math, physics, and chemistry course content and ended up writing some software for them and doing project management for production of their online courses.

Ask post: and sometimes one cook can spoil it by himself
I made some pan-scraping steak gravy last night that started out very bitter. Why? I have no idea, but I salvaged it with a little maple syrup (I know, total bachelor move, but it worked!) and then some cream. Sweet and creamy canceled out the bitter.

Ask post: Studio One on the Mac SE.
I remember Studio 8! I made cassette covers for my band's demo tape with it.

I was in engineering school and had access to several image manipulation programs in the Mac lab. I recall evaluating Photoshop and Studio 8 and very much favoring the latter. When I found out one of my professor's sons wrote Photoshop, I recall biting my tongue regarding my preference.

No idea where you'd find copies now. The umich mac archive?... [more]

Ask post: Skill vs. Chance in Solitaire?
I'm going to skip the stats and say that not every game is winnable based on memories of my grandfather who played all day long. Every once in a while we'd hear a "Son of a BITCH. Stuck!" and a slap of the cards down as he abandoned a game.

Ask post: Jazz tunes ending on weird chords?
What's funny is that there "incongruous" bebop endings are completely standard. Go to any jazz jam and, if you're a bass player, put a big fat IV on the bottom of the last chord. People will smile at your cleverness every time. Make it V or VII and they'll think you made a mistake.

Ask post: Mac Diagnosis
My older G4 Ti-book started simply freezing--no beachball, just frozen. The only action I could take was to hold the power button down for a hard restart. Before abandoning it for a new machine, I thought I'd try just a little to diagnose it. First test was to shut down, plug it into another Mac via firewire, and then start it up holding the "T" key down. This makes the machine into a hard drive for the other Mac. From there I backed up the whole hard drive and ran disk utility... [more]

Ask post: What to do in Austin
My former band has gigs everywhere. Check them out if you like authentic 40's lounge w/crooner. 50% originals 50% covers.

If I were in Austin, I'd go to Sam's BBQ on East 12th. For the full effect, do it at 2 AM.

If you like museums, the Harry Ransom Center has some good stuff. A Gutenberg bible, and Charles Dicken's dinner plates are two things I recall.

Focusing on shapes makes you a guitar player. Knowing the scales makes you a musician.

And then forgetting the scales makes you... a better musician.

I second figuring out your own scales, but if you must have sheet music: Dr. Morton. (not free, and not printable off of the internet)

I join you in the 3/4 serendipity! (And I just joined you in Toronto if that's where you are!)

I'm sorry I can't answer your question for sure, but I do have an anecdote that may be helpful: I recently flew within the US with no ID but my expired YMCA card. All that happened was that I had to go through extra security (which was actually faster than the security for the properly ID'd.) I could've been Canadian, German, or Lilliputian for all they knew.

Peel a bunch of ripe bananas, wrap them in plastic wrap, and stick them in the freezer. Buy a bag of frozen diced fruit, or berries. Keep that in the freezer too. When it is smoothie time, put a frozen banana and some fruit in the blender. Add fruit juice, and some water if the fruit juice is really sweet. Blend. It's all about the fruit, baby!

Meat in a frying pan is quick and easy. Find a good source of organic beast and learn to cook them in a frying pan. Or use the broiler. Eggs fry.

Steamed veggies is easy with a pan of water and a colander. Eggs also boil.

I've always liked vague titles like "Operations" or "Systems." If you want to add some clout, I'd agree with the "Director of Operations" suggestion.

When I was working on fraud at a company that didn't want it to be known that they had a fraud problem, I used "General Specialist." It was funny for those paying attention and would pass right by those who didn't really care.

Fly my mom out to watch the baby. Hire a couple of handy-people, from craigslist or something, to work on the yard, finish putting base shoe around the living room, clean the garage and shop, and clean my office.

Wow. That's really unexciting.

OK. How about rent a house in Ojai, bring four friends up, and record an album.

Just play the thing! Use your ears to make corrections. Try different positions (body, arms, and hands) until you find one that is (most) comfortable. Playing along with recordings is great. Learn the octave shape with Gimme Some Lovin'. Learn 4ths and 5ths with classic country tunes or blues. Turn on an Oldies station and see if you can get the bass line down before each song ends.

The great thing about the double bass is that it's played in so many different ways. You... [more]

How web savy are the employees? Do you have at least one person who could set up a wiki?

I recently set up a wiki using this software. And added a form page using this plug-in. So members of my organization (who aren't all super web savy) can go there and add their information to a list we're making. The list is rendered by the software as a simple HTML table which can be copied and pasted into Excel.

I agree that you should wait. Making out (or during intimate moments thereafter) is the right time to tell a guy he's hot. I've been told I'm hot and if I'm not in the middle having sex with the speaker, it creeps me out a little.

I also agree that hotness should not be deduced from a photo, but rather in person. There may be a mannerism or feature that instantly cancels out the hotness you thought you saw.

Thirdly, email is not a good medium for... [more]

I like lain's suggestion as one tack for you to take. Crank your unorthodox dog humping moves up as far as they go. And enjoy the hell out of moving your body. Non-selfconscious wild-man spectacle dancing while exuding pure joy can make you appealing to some.

I also second learning swing dancing. I realize that you specified club dancing, but swing moves can be used in a club. If there is someone who appears to be interested in dancing in your general vicinity, it can be... [more]

An approach I've taken is to pay for a single host account with a fixed IP address. This cheapie hosting site has it as a $30/yr add-on. I assume others do too.

Then register all of your domain names with a registrar who'll let you edit the DNS records. Set the A records for the domain names you want to use to your fixed IP.

The second paragraph of your question is a pretty good start for specs. If you have a good volunteer, you should be able to go from there.

Your requirements for simple structure and self-updateability suggest that a CMS system of some sort will be a good fit. Your requirement that it be readable from a CD ROM however, complicates this a bit. It's not easy to put a CMS system on a CD ROM that will run on any platform (Windows, Macs, and Linux.) It is... That's how I did it. I just made calls for a few days to all of the big lines and eventually got the number and address of the dudes who hire musicians. Gave them a call, sent in a demo, and I was on the ship a few months later.
