A 57, a cable, and a mixer would be a top notch $150 path to your computer.

I guess this would be old school given the arrival of studio quality USB mics. I haven't tried any of those yet.... [more]

Music post: Crawl
Nice. I'd like to hear your lead voice more naturally--like the "I keep crawling" parts (which I like very much!)

OK, I just listened to the CDBaby clips. Yeah. I get the production here. In that context, it fits better for me. Great work!

I'm still dying to hear just a little more detail when you stretch up to those G's: "droooown" "meeercilously"

Also, you know, you've got Steeley Dan-like progressions that don't sound, like, totally random at all. It flows. That Bbm should jar and it doesn't. That's tricky.

Wow! I'm honored. That was my first time too. Thank you for being gentle.

You could definitely play in the Monkey Power Trio.

Play your track above simultaneously with this:

Music post: BASSFIGHT!!!!12!!!!!!
I had to throw something up for the bass fight and finally got a few hours yesterday!

What I did was pick a tempo and some simple chord changes and recorded with a metronome on headphones. I played a few times through on upright (a real one, sorry--no way to fake it yet) walking then a solo, then a few times through on electric playing chords and a solo, and then mixed them together in Cooledit. They don't line up exactly but good enough for the bassfight!... [more]

Music post: You Are My Sunshine
I miss the Aural Times too!

Seeing it mentioned here makes me wonder if you couldn't do it with a group of musicians. Use the power of the net and get other to generate content for you! What if you had 12 "reporters" on a schedule to submit stories? You'd only have to produce one yourself every few weeks or so. You, as curmudgeonly editor, could comment on the pieces. Good, bad, or ugly, the songs--along with your great writing--would at least entertain.... [more]

Music post: Rocketships
Here's the book.

Here's the poem:

Rocket ships
Are exciting
But so are roses
On a birthday

Computers are exciting
But so is a sunset

And logic
Will never replace
Love

Sometimes I wonder
Where I belong
In the future

Music post: Interplanetary Lover (lyrics NSFW)
Cleaning up and old hard drive and look what I found! This is nearly 100% computer composed and generated music.

Sometime in the middle of the last decade I bought my first computer--a Mac 6100. It came with the standard Apple text-to-speech capabilities for which some enterprising person wrote a piece of software that allowed you to modify the pitch of each syllable. To have the Mac "sing" you just import a midi melody and then type in the words. The syllables... [more]

I'm glad y'all got a kick out of it. I thought it was fun too, and didn't want to just let it sit there on my old HD.

I do have more. Even though they're pure novelty, they are somewhat musical. That BIAB generates some damn catchy tunes! I like melody and changes at

Follow me to the stars above
For interplanetary love

Also how the styllables of "interplanetary" fell.

I'll dig up another. Stay tuned.

Nice! And I'm glad you're back!

I will now resume pretending that this weekend I will have time to work on a story.

Music post: No Good News Today
Cortex, I started "Uma Thurman Refuses to Criticize Ex-Husband" to submit to the Aural Times on Monday evening, but didn't get a chance to finish it. I thought it was a headline worthy of song.

Nice job on this one. The strings and harmony are nice.
