Misogyny Filter (?)
I'm with MPDSEA all the way on this one (and that is not something I say often). If a man does not feel comfortable having sex without wearing a condom, pressuring him to stop wearing it is no different than a guy pressuring a woman to have sex without protection beacuse of course the dude promises to pull out before he ejaculates. Promise. Swear to god. You can trust me, baby.

Metafilter in the Globe and Mail
I think it's the equivalent of the paper that you read in your white bucks while sitting out on your patio in the Hamptons before getting ready for your polo match, or perhaps a bit of yachting.

I nominate katillathehun to make an executive decision on place and time. Because she seems executive-y, and it's already Monday afternoon.

Is there a consensus? 'Cause otherwise I'm holding a meetup at my place, and none of you are invited. It'll just be me and my stuffed animals.

I like a lot of what Will writes (as long as we're not discussing the Civil War) but this is not a good precedent and probably doesn't belong in Metatalk. Or anywhere.

A SHIT OBIT
I think obit threads, on general, are a recipe for a shit post with shit comments. Was Snow more worthy of an obit than Debakey? Was Helms more worthy of an obit than Tom Disch who died a few days ago? I don't think Disch even rated a post. And so on.
But I still don't know what you think will be accomplished by this callout. It can't possibly wendel... uh... you know.

Obit threads suck. If someone was worth a FPP, they were worth a FPP while they were alive. Making the front page of Metafilter isn't some sort of magic undead consolation prize.

5 minutes of great reading.
I think that's unfair; Metatalk is for hashing things like this out. Forrest displayed a rather overdeveloped sensitivity here. Slinking off in self pity because a couple people thought your FPP wasn't brilliant? Even though it got over 150 favorites?
It's true that Metafilter might not be right for you if you're that sensitive; that doesn't strike me as a problem with Metafilter.

Memorial fund?
A metafilter-wide fund of this kind should really only be set up if, god forbid, something happened to one of the mods or something. Otherwise it's vastly better if you just set it up in projects. There is no end to the number of legitimately needy people and organizations and Metafilter isn't really set up to be the kind of thing you're looking for.

Uh, they weren't black.
The guys Horn shot were named Hernando Torres and Diego Ortiz and part of an organized Colombian home burglary ring of illegal immigrants.
Note: I'm not saying that makes it open season, but try to get the facts straight.

Sure, a meta callout for this is kind of lame, but using the word "hacks" when you mean "tips" ("I need sex tips, please...") is like hanging a sign around your neck saying "HIPSTER DOOFUS" or, perhaps, "VIRGIN".

General knowledge is not the same thing as IQ even if we are to grant that IQ is an important measure in the first place. Testing if the subject knows which country administered Greenland for most of its history has nothing to do with IQ.

I have a friend at work who played it on the 360 a lot, until he discovered about the physical mod you can attach to your controller to get semi-autofire in-game.
Given that most of the weapons in the game are already fully automatic I'm not sure exactly what this gains you. About the only weapon I can figure it would be at all useful on is the G3 since that's a good gun but only semi-automatic.
Now that I think about it, I... [more]

Why post this here? I guarantee you somebody will make a one link news post the second the major networks declare Obama the nominee in an hour or two. And I wager that somebody else will post a much better and more fleshed out post on the same subject 15 or 20 minutes later. With luck it is the first that will be deleted.
So now we have a third thread.

Aside from actually kicking off the descenting voices, this place tends to be exactly the same as LGF, but in the exact opposite direction, politically.
You've either never read Metafilter or never read LGF. I can't think of a more untrue statement I've read today.
For one thing, Metafilter doesn't tend to call for anyones deaths.

Ministry of Mis-Information
Except you're dealing with an outcome that is binary in nature -- you're either pregnant or not. Therefore, there is no such thing as "slightly unsafe." It's either zero or non-zero.
This is kind of dumb, actually. If you jump out of a plane without a parachute, the "do I die?" outcome is also binary in nature; you either die or you don't. Therefore, there is no such thing as "very dangerous" jumping out of airplanes... [more]

Cool Papa Bell: But your analogies aren't equivalent either. There is a non-zero risk if the woman is question did nothing. There is also a non-zero risk from taking the pill. The question is which risk is higher, and the odds of a pregnancy being caused by what took place is sufficiently low that it isn't clear which is the greater risk.
