Ask post: Is the headset I'm looking for extinct technology?
I was hoping for something less expensive. I also didn't see any mention of stereo on their site, but it looks like they'd reply to an e-mail.

Will keep looking, and if that's the cheapest, so be it. I definitely will use the term "binaural" when searching from now on; I never thought to use it in this context.

Thanks for the (eponysterical?) help.

Whoops, looks like the only one there has a quick release. I think macguffin found the only headset of its kind left in the world. And it's made by the same manufacturer (Chameleon) as the cheaper one on the site I found.

I received a reply to my e-mail in almost no time at all:
It's not stereo. It's for telephone use, and telephones are not stereo.

The same sound is fed throungh both ears to block out noise. The incoming voice seems like it's in the center of the head, slightly to the rear.

Ask post: Why do some people wear shoes indoors?
Here is my shoe-biography.

I am n-th generation American. Both of my parents' families are from NYC/NJ. I was born in the Midwest, moved to the Northeast (NJ) around 1st grade. Mother was Irish-German (definitely NOT Anglo-Protestant; polar opposite), and my father was African-American.

I don't remember any firm shoe rules when I was younger. The first time I can remember rules regarding shoes was when my parents divorced and my single mother... [more]

Ask post: You need concentwation.
I like a lot of the advice in this thread. I do tend to think of my self from day to day as different people. There's nothing weird about that. I also fully acknowledge that I'd probably be that guy who'd bop his 12-year old self if we were to ever meet. He didn't do me many favors.

Breaking big things into small things is all well and good, but for me it does not work to think in terms of what I have to do. I'm very contrary. No, instead I think in terms of what I get... [more]

Ask post: One word for music and memory association?
I can't think of one. Proust coined involuntary memory. You may want to do some reading on episodic memory, echoic memory, flashbulb memory, etc. Wikipedia has a nice article on emotion and memory.

Of tangential interest might be the reminiscence bump, given that people tend to be most interested in music in adolescence.... [more]

Ask post: Hudson River Crossing - Pro Tips?
As someone who was in a NJ to MA LDR for several years, I've done most of the main routes at various times of year and during every holiday; legal, religious, or otherwise. Of course, my travel needs and desires will differ from yours, as will the endpoints.

Most often, I take I-84 to either CT-15 (Wilbur Cross/Merrit Pkwy) or to I-684/I-287. I use the Merrit if I'm staying with my grandmother in Washington Heights, NYC, because it's a little more convenient. But if I'm... [more]

Ask post: Practice makes perfect
I'm a technical writer. Not only do I read technical manuals (in more detail than you probably do; or rather, meta-reading. Or something) and web documentation (yes, there are Firefox geeks who review the documentation just like the ones who review the code), but I also like to take walks. Maybe because I was once an aspiring mathematician, I play with concepts in my head in what I imagine is much the same fashion. I try to break things down to their simplest parts and think of how to explain... [more]

Ask post: Can you convince me NOT to buy a hybrid?
Depending on your needs, you may want to look into motorcycling. My motorcycle regularly gets 50+ mpg. I have a Civic as a backup, which gets 40+mpg highway (not sure if that has to do with it being manual trans.). Both vehicles cost me ~$3500 total.

Right now, I am about 50/50 moto/car usage, but as it warms up, that will change to around 90-95% moto / 5-10% car.

Ask post: Why does alcohol disrupt my sleep? And what can I do about it?
Alcohol supresses REM sleep. There are two types of sleep; slow-wave or deep sleep, and REM. Slow wave sleep (SWS) is most prevalent early at night. REM pressure increases as the night proceeds. What's probably happening is that as you're coming out of one of your periods of SWS, your brain wants to go into REM but the alcohol is blocking it. So you wake up. The sluggishness and irritability is just a function of sleep loss.

The secret is to drink less. Sorry, but there it is.

Ask post: Please help me find bike friendly routes from CT to NY and PA.
Depending on the time of day, the Bear Mountain Bridge (Rt. 6) may be your best bet. You can get some idea of the pedestrian/bike access from pictures (1, 2). It's almost certainly the most scenic route, but as you mention, is probably also the most strenuous. Some info about Hudson River Crossings. I also found some info by searching google for "bear mountain bridge" + bike (more images, too).

I hope that helps, and I hope we get some pictures when you're done.... [more]

Ask post: Help me conquer my fear of driving
Try some driving video games. Not the ones where you're supposed to smash things up. Most race games have a basic oval track you can practice with, and they're fairly faithful driving sims. Pick a low-end non-superfast car and just practice going around the track, reversing and going forward. It gives you a sense of control without the crash-factor.

Driving schools usually have cars where the instructor has a brake. They're not too expensive, especially if this is a... [more]

Ask post: Why are magnets not bad?
Think of a neuron as a tube, or a pipe (thus making the brain/nervous system a series of tubes). When a neuron is triggered, it either depolarizes or hyperpolarizes. This is done by pumping charged ions into and out of the neuron. So if you took a tube (like a paper towel roll or a PVC pipe) and poked a lot of holes in it, the ions would be flowing directly in or out through the holes in the side of the tube. In a wire, the current flows along the length of the wire (basically)... [more]

Ask post: How can we unlock a house that isn't ours?
I have accomplished the same thing with a small, thin putty knife bought down the street at a hobbyist store (where people who build models of things go). It was a little bit thicker than a plasticware knife, and less brittle, so even with a steel door I was able to slide it behind the lock and retract the steel bit. A professional locksmith has a dedicated plastic shim that does the same thing, but he'll charge you about $60-75 to do it.

Also, please note that a small, thin, plastic putty knife as detailed in my previous answer will work even when the jamb is on the outside of the door. It should bend enough to snake inside the way a credit card won't.

Ask post: How can I stop being a snobbish jerk about music?
1. Find musical overlap. A big turning point in my current relationship was when I showed my country-luvin' girl that Mike Ness could do country-punk. It also helped that I showed I was trying to meet her halfway (which, to be fair, she hadn't).

2. Think not so much of the music, but of the feelings you have when you're around this person. Now, whenever some poppy girl-country comes on, I tend to smile a bit, because I'm thinking of my girlfriend.... [more]

Ask post: Time travel
If time is a measure of the propagation of information (thinking in terms of how time stops at the event horizon of a black hole, and no information can escape), the reversion of time may also be the erasure of information. To anthropomorphize this concept, a person travelling backwards in time may find themselves unable to remember how they got there. This is the "Hollywood" version, though; but I think it's been used in one or two movies which escape me at the moment.... [more]

I don't think anyone's mentioned one of the popular (?) quantum mechanical approaches to disproving time travel. I hope it's not too off-topic, as the original question asked about whether a lack of evident time travelers, not whether it was possible according to possible laws of the universe.

A paradox does not cause the universe to cease to exist. A paradox causes the universe to never have existed. Paradoxes literally can't exist, because they (and this is... [more]
