A request for MeFemail 1.1
On one hand, it would be nice to be able to nudge a bunch of people to say "hey, you are within X miles of this city, you interested in a meetup." However, I don't know if people who are here just for askme want to get harrassed all the time.
I proposed something like this a little while ago. People were mostly against it.

Groundhog Day is a Saturday, right? I think I can do that. Never been to either of those places though, has anyone else? What are they like?

Oh shoot, I just remembered I have plans with my girlfriend that night. Specifically, the "We Heart Daft Punk" dance party at the Biltmore. (y'all should come, it's gonna be rad)

Before this thing dies we should come up with an alternative date maybe a bit further into the future. Here are some ideas:
1. Thursday Feb 7th
2. Friday Feb 8th
3. Saturday Feb 9th
4. Friday Feb 15th
5. Saturday Feb 16th
I vote for Saturday Feb 9th.

OK, how about the Brickhouse at 8:00pm on Saturday Feb 9th?
I guess since I proposed the date I'm sort of the organizer now. So I'll make sure I'm there. Does 8pm sound like a good time? Should we go a bit earlier to make sure we get a table? I don't remember the layout of the Brickhouse, will it be easy to find people or should we try to plan on being in a certain area of the bar?
Oh and I have never been to a meetup before. I am curious if friends... [more]

Important update!! I just happened to drive by the Brickhouse today at 7:00 and it looked like they were closed, so I called them and sure enough they open at 8:00.
Let's push the start time to 8:30pm, OK?

i enjoyed a nice walk up the hill with heeraldo and myopicman. we left around 1:00 and we were the last. I would put the peak attendance around 10.

well, first of all my band is not called the Black Fridays. In fact we're so new we don't have a name yet. But my last band was called Speaking of Devils. Second, we played at Hoko's Sushi and Karaoke Bar, not the Lunchbox, though I can see how you get these mixed up. Third, I would never spam my friends with facebook messages. I just created a facebook event and invited them that way.
all true. sigh

It's a delicate balance when you play in a mostly-for-fun kind of band. A lot of your friends are genuinely interested in hearing you play - maybe once or twice. After that point there is a hint of desperation, and your invites go from "you keep asking me when you can come hear us play, well here's your chance!" to "It would mean a lot to me if you would come".
I would now like to state for the record that if I were to message Vancouverites my... [more]

GiveWell, or Give 'em Hell?
Late to the thread, but I had a hell of a time reading it and am proud to be a part of this place. Anyway, it seems Lucy has responded on her blog:
Thank you to people from MetaFilter for explaining certain elements of this to me. After checking into MetaFilter myself, its also clear that "blatant self promotion" is clearly discouraged and should not have been attempted. Its also now clear to me that it is not what happened - instead it was a case of... [more]

P.S. does anyone else find Lucy's response kind of incoherent? I'm scratching my head trying to figure out exactly what point she's trying to make by rattling off points that we all already knew. I was hoping for something with a bit more meat.

If you look at Lucy's blog, she's tightened up her tone considerably and is now (at last) starting to sound like a professional:
Thank you - to those who have consistently focused the discussion on the depth of the transgressions, the implications for accountability, and have patiently helped me navigate archived conversations. Your attention to the issues and its implications are appropriate, helpful, and appreciated. I take my board responsibilities seriously... [more]

mrserkan, in a nutshell we're still talking about it because, as this thread will indicate, the story goes deeper than simply posting without identifying himself. Earlier in the thread you will find lots of other mis-deeds uncovered, as well as continuing conversations with several of the board members at Givewell, speculation about what's going on at Givewell, and some fascinating analysis about the non-profit sector as a whole. In other words, we're having a conversation here.

yeah, this thread is taking forever to lead, can we maybe close it and start a new one? perhaps the first few comments in that thread could summarize the story. then it won't be so baffling for people who come here and find a 1000-comment behemoth.
p.s. mrserkan: I guess you are new here so you don't know. You need evidence if you want to make an argument, otherwise people will feel free to disagree with you.

OK then. Google pedometer says my daily commute is 14.69 miles. It is the rainy season in Vancouver and I will often be tempted to take the bus... but perhaps this challenge will motivate me. Though I doubt it will get below freezing.

I was up last weekend. It was just beautiful.
Still on the fence about if I'm coming for the whole weekend or just daytripping for one day. Anyone have space on the Saturday night? I have a season pass so the 2-night 2-ticket deal doesn't really suit me.

I was at Whistler yesterday; shortly after heading home they closed the highway and we had to go back to Whistler and stay over. It was a monster snow-storm, just a nightmare. Those who are driving, make sure you have winter tires or snow chains if you're attempting the drive in winter conditions. I heard police were ticketing drivers with improper tires and turning them back. (such storms are rare but trust me when I say you need to be prepared. I must have seen a dozen cars in the ditch... I didn't actually read this post, but I thought I'd come in here to say that I AM SO FUCKING TIRED OF HEARING ABOUT RON PAUL.
Can I say that I think Metafilter has done a pretty good job keeping the Ron Paul madness in check. The blimp post was deleted, wasn't it? I mostly found out about him from Digg and Reddit (where it's pretty much non-stop), I haven't seen much on Metafilter.

Meta Answer Syndrome
I read this question as a simple clash of morals. The poster believes prostitution is morally wrong. Most of the responders believe it is morally acceptable, or at least that the correct behavior is 'MYOB'. Thus you have indignation and disbelief on both sides, not to mention bizarre rationalizations. For example, possible danger to the kids: an invented threat from the poster to back up a moral belief. But on behalf of many respondants, a lot of creative explanations that are really not... [more]

I'm changing the path of my graduate studies in computer engineering to line myself up for PhD in some kind of environmental sciences to do something like life cycle analysis on the tech industry. I have a meeting with a prospective future supervisor next week. So far so good.... [more]

Seriously guys, he just wants a name.
The best and worst thing about AskMe is that you get answers to the questions you didn't ask. He asked for a marriage counselor to recommend. He didn't ask "does it make any sense for me to recommend a counselor". But if people believe the answer to the second question is "no" then they think they are helping the poster by saying so.

Unless we count the MeTa thread as well, which pushes the dead kids up to 7. But what about this thread, which two people favorited? Better distribute them evenly. Therefore:
