What a warm, loving family...
Just about every Korean film ever made seems to deal with the topic of family -- though usually by blood, but they always tend to be flawed and struggle to maintain cohesion. If you've never seen it, The Host is as good a place to start as any, and like most of the Korean films I've seen, it tends to skilfully and seamlessly genre-hop -- in this case between drama, comedy, Godzilla-style monster movie and tearjerking melodrama.

Which Who? Doctor Who DVD recommendations.
It must be Pertwee or Baker, or you're wasting your time.
Meh. William Hartnoll was the one true timelord. All others were fakers.
Though Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy were worse than fakers. These actors should have been taken out and shot for crimes against the franchise.

How do I cherish her?
How is it, then, that I spend so much of our time together bringing her down over small things she says or arguing over minor issues?
Are you sure that you actually do these things, or is it possible that you are uncritically accepting your girlfriend's worldview -- which may not necessarily be a reasonable one?
Firstly, you can't argue in isolation. It takes two people to argue, so you should only bear half of the... [more]

Where should I go for arts/electronics/performance stuff?
This late, you won't have a chance of finding anywhere with a roof to put anything on yourself, but that doesn't generally stop people.
I've just put down a deposit on a two bedroomed apartment within walking distance of the City Centre for the second week of the festival -- near to Arthur's Seat, judging from the map. It cost me £500 for the week though that's definitely at the cheaper end of what you'll pay.

Hands-free orgasms? Oh, ye lucky few...
whomever is on top bears some responsibility for finding what will work
This isn't my experience. My experience is that women, regardless of their position, invariably figure out what works for them in this situation, and then use me like some enormous dildo until they get to the place where they want to go.
My role in all this seems to be limited to getting them to a place where it's possible for them to accomplish this with... [more]

since you admit your ex is not only increasingly violent but also suffers from a mental illness
I'm dubious about the mental illness line. OP said he's diagnosed as bipolar. Not that he's being treated for bipolar. Men use a lot of excuses to justify their violent behaviour. Unless you know personally that he's been diagnosed, or he's taking meds for the condition, I'd suspect him of a bullshit self-diagnosis aimed at getting sympathy and a free pass here.

Most kits will also have alcohol swabs and some sort of citric acid / lemon juice to help things along.
This is an English vs. US thing, brautigan. Our heroin comes mostly from Afghanistan/Pakistan and is produced primarily for smoking, so it needs the acid to break it down for injection. Most US heroin (esp. on the East Coast) comes from South East Asia -- Burma, Thailand, etc. and is produced for injection, so it really only needs a bit of heat to... [more]

This one usually keeps poop away from the one that is actually the "exit" until you go to the bathroom.
And from the active male side of the equation, I'd just like to say that I've been having anal sex for the last thirty years or so, and only once during that period have I ever seen shit on my dick after I've pulled it out.

Talking to the dying
Have faith in yourself. It sounds like your friend doesn't want to hear the insights of the Zen Masters, she wants to hear what you have to say. Trust her instincts. Say what's in your heart.
Strongly agree with this. I know how to use a library and I don't have trouble reading, so if I wanted to talk to a friend about my own mortality, it would be because there was something about them and the way that they related to the world that I found helpful.... [more]

I've got a HDMI problem with my new HTPC
Thanks for the suggestions, people. As is so often the case, it seems to be a driver problem. Unusually, it seems to work OK without any drivers. The Intel video driver and the Realtek sound driver are reportedly reliant on a Microsoft HDMI driver, but when I removed the Microsoft HDMI driver, the picture kicked in. I'll start a fresh install and just add a bit at a time, and see how that goes.
There also appears to be a problem with a blue cast when I display via the TV.... [more]

is it possible that the dvi is set as "default". is there possibly a setting in the driver software to set one output as primary?
Actually, the software recognizes that it's connected to a 'Digital Television' via HDMI, and I know that it's sending a signal, because the screen flickers wildly, but it never loses that 'no signal' sign.
The VNC idea is a good one though. There are scores of computers knocking around... [more]

Vista wireless access point config
I'm a bodger rather than an IP pro, but:
I think you have the wrong subnet mask. IIRC, with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, your router would have to be at 192.168.1.50 before your network would see and talk to it.
Also, is your firewall allowing the packages through?
Finally, on every router I've ever configured, the IP number on the internet facing side tends to be the one that's allocated by your ISPs DHPC server and... [more]

If I leave the Integrated Controller settings to auto grab the IP (instead of hardcoding as above), then it doesn't acquire an IPv4 gateway. The autoconfig IP is set to 169.254.56.168.
Actually, this is as it should be if the router is talking to the internet. Your IP gateway (the one that you enter into your TCP control panel) should be the routers IP number, which you've allocated as 50.

Neighbourhood Poker Tour: How do we record it?
Even if you do go the whole hog, you wouldn't really need a single face cam per player. You'd just need 4 cameras, one covering each quadrant of the table, in order to cover the faces of everyone playing. As lodev says, just managing all that footage would get pretty damn tiresome otherwise.
While your idea appeals to me greatly, the more I think of it, the more impractical it seems. Each hand would generate mountains of footage. An evening's poker will result in an... [more]

I'm not sure about sliding all the cards across a single cam. Poker is a game of position, and how you play a hand very much depends on what position you're in. Given that, it's hard to see how you wouldn't need nine cams -- plus a cam for the the community cards -- not so much for the dealer though. Have you thought about how you intend to:
a.) link the hole cam to the player, and
b.) track the hands in relation to the blinds for each hand

A company I would die for is screwing me over hard...
Perhaps I'm missing something here, but if this really is a story about a wrongfully issued staff discount, why don't you just offer the company the difference between the discount price and the full price to make up the difference?
Personally, I don't see how you're obliged to. Employee buys goods on his staff discount. Employee gets tired of said goods. Employee sells goods on with no profit involved. I don't see how they can force an employee to keep a product that... [more]

How can I reset my connection to "Obtain DNS server address automatically" rather than using OpenDNS' nameservers?
Can you log into the computer using the administrator account rather than logging into the domain?
Failing that, can you log in using safe mode?
If you can get access using either of these methods, then you should be able to fix your DNS choices.

Issues with my Wedding DJ
I hear a lot of people whining about how, given your spend on the wedding, the cost of the vendor meal that you've decided to deduct is nothing.
OK. But given that this firm is charging $1500 to provide a DJ for the night, that isn't going to be very much to them either. Their refusal to ensure your satisfaction in this matter shows them up as being a shitty operation.

Any wedding that is truly "marred" or any couple who is actually "traumatized" by such an incident has far bigger problems than the loss of 25 dollars.
You're missing the point. The point is payback. The extent of any trauma or marring, genuine or otherwise is completely immaterial.
It's the Keyser Sose school of dispute resolution. Fuck with me or mine and I *will* make you pay.
