MeFi post: Invading Space
Pretty excellent.

MeFi post: By George! and other puns
I'm more interested in the lowest seeded team prior to GMU making it to the final four.

I was just reading a thread in a bball forum saying that LSU made it as an 11 seed in '86.

MeFi post: I miss you, and I bet this sucks about as much as Pearl Harbor, since at least that only ripped off history.
From the previews, I thought it was going to be a remake of Logan's Run.

I thought the same thing, loquax. Something about the first half of the earliest trailer seemed suggestive of Logan's Run.

MeFi post: The 50 best shoot-em-ups
Space Invaders should be #1. And if something like Robotron fits their definition of a shooter, then Berzerk should definitely be on there.

MeFi post: Want to play twenty questions?
Wow. 28 questions both times; river and lamp.

And now, 28 for jukebox. Bastard!

Interesting. It took 28 to get a basketball also.

MeFi post: Sea Launch
I didn't realize there was such a strong demand to send television sattelites into space. I feel guilty that so much energy was expended so I can get HDTV channels.

I was interested to note when I first got satellite tv a couple years back that the progress of various launches is followed fairly closely on some of the satellite tv forums. I have to admit I myself am hoping this will hasten the arrival of availability of local channels on directv in... [more]

MeFi post: Briscoe and Curtis go fishing
The beauty of Law & Order isn't in the original plotlines, it's in the tremendous performances by actors ...

I agree, it's often the execution of the formula that makes any given cop show entertaining, because Cop/Law shows are often formulaic. Much as I like them, the plot of any given episode of L&O, NYPD Blue, CSI, etc. is typically paint-by-numbers -- it's characterization and atmosphere that set them apart from each other, and (usually)... MeFi post: Rulers of the solar system
Although I haven't seen Dr Who since I was a kid watching it on PBS in the early 80's, I've been fascinated by the idea that there are what, apparently more than a hundred lost episodes, ever since I read a blurb about the situation a couple years ago.

A quick google finds this page sumarizing the situation as of a couple years ago. Anybody got other links that cover this?

MeFi post: decisions, decisions
Um.... burning feathers? What?

Burning feathers is one of the worst smells in the world. I used to live in an area that had some chicken farms nearby, and when they'd burn their feathers you could smell it from miles away. Just an awful smell.

MeFi post: Apartheid for Blogs!
their reasoning that it'll be removed from the main search like usenet was is rather flawed as usenet isn't part of the web, while blogs are.

And further, aside from the usenet question, as far as I can tell web content that is searchable under Google's other tabs has not been specifically removed from the main index. This is also true of froogle.google.com searches -- search on a title and author and... [more]

MeFi post: A complete scan of Action Comics Number 1. (note...
skallas - DC has reprinted the Superman portion of the material over the years (and doubtless some or all of the rest of the material from the issue. Action #1 and quite a bit of the rest of the early DC material was available for purchase in microfiche form a few years back, for example. Fabulous stuff.) The Superman portion of the material is currently in print as part of their Archive editions (Action Comics Archives Volume 1).

Yeah, it is interesting what elements... [more]

Webmutant - Cool info. My knowledge of key events outside of the comics themselves isn't as strong as it ought to be. I'd always heard that many elements of both the Superman and Batman mythos were created in the newspaper strips, radio show, etc. (Supe's flying power originated in the Fleischer cartoon, didn't it?), but I'd never heard that about kryptonite before. Wow, 6 years before the first comic app? It makes you wonder why they waited so long after that to work it into the comics.... [more]

MeFi post: ...and now on Tuesday they're releasing this!...
Yeah, this is becoming fairly common on the DVD scene. The transfer technology and what people expect from the package (lots of extras) has apparently changed quite a bit over the past couple years, and as the dvd marketplace has evolved the success of some re-releases has resulted in more experimentation in this area, such as Columbia's Superbit line, and re-releases even on very recent stuff.

On the plus side, a re-release usually results in a significant price drop... [more]

Thanks, lucien. I've developed a sizeable dvd habit in recent months and these "what version to get / should I wait to see if they release a superedition" issues are something I've had to wring my hands over also. The market forces in the industry are pretty interesting... a combination of geek tech and pop culture.

The new Almost Famous dvd seems to be getting good reviews. I was surprised to see the bootleg director's cut has 35 or so extra minutes.... [more]
