Database and Reporting Specialist

Hello! MidSOUTH at UALR is a grant-funded training organization that seeks to train in the areas of initial and continuing education for social workers, foster parents, adoptive parents, and staff of the Division of Family and Child Services in the state of Arkansas. We're looking for someone to complete our IT team by stepping into the role of our php/mysql guru. The ideal candidate will know about data normalization, mysql optimization, and have a good understanding of database concepts. Also, the ability to use PHP, Crystal Reports, or other methods to produce reports of the data for our customers. We are thinking of moving to a CMS to simplify our current custom-designed portal, so experience with leading CMSs--we're leaning towards Drupal or Typo3--would be helpful. MidSOUTH is a great place to work (I've been here three years); even though we're part of a university, we have no faculty (and none of the political intrigue that brings), only staff. Also, $40,000 will take you a lot farther in Little Rock than most any other city! Anyway, shoot me or the jobs line a message if you have any questions. Here is the original posting, as it went out to the newspapers: * * * * * The University of Arkansas at Little Rock, MidSOUTH seeks a qualified applicant to fill the Database Specialist position in its Information Technology Division. Minimum Qualifications: - Minimum of three years work experience in Web based SQL data programming, specifically in PHP and MySQL. - Expert knowledge in database design and architecture. - Programming skills (such as: PHP, Cold Fusion, ASP.net, JavaScript, Oracle PL/SQL, and VBscript). - Experience in various software programs including but not limited to Microsoft Office Pro, and Windows and Unix OS’s. - Experience in Content Management Systems and Enterprise Reporting Systems a plus. - Highly developed problem-solving abilities. - Excellent writing, verbal, interpersonal, and organizational skills. - Must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently and in a team environment. - Outstanding customer service skills. Bachelor’s degree highly preferred. In-state & overnight travel will be required. Position will require occasional work other than normal office hours. Applicants must have the ability to lift 30 pounds and negotiate stairs. To apply: submit a current resume and a letter of application to: jobs@midsouth.ualr.edu or mail to: MidSOUTH, Attn: Frances K Griebel, 2801 S. University, Little Rock, AR 72204. Application deadline is April 20, 2007 @ 5:00 p.m. No telephone calls or faxes will be accepted. The salary is in the lower $40k range with competitive fringe benefits. All MidSOUTH positions are funded through contracts and are renewed on an annual basis contingent on funding. All applications are subject to public disclosure under AR Freedom of Information Act. Who is trying to login to my OSX laptop?

OSX Security: I followed the instructions on this MacOSXhints article to setup my shiny new MacBook Pro to take a picture using the built-in iSight whenever there's a failed authentication attempt. I've noticed that every night at 9:53, there are multiple failed login attempts, but it's while I'm using the computer, so I end up with pictures of me.

Help me sell/get rid of my falling-apart 1978 Cadillac DeVille.

I have a 1978 Cadillac DeVille sitting in my driveway. It needs a new starter and rear main seal (so they say). I don't really want it, but want to get rid of it for the most money possible. What should I do?

Songs for Post-Breakup Blues

WhyDoesItHurtSoMuchFilter: Recently, my boyfriend of about 3 years broke up with me. Apparently not because of anything I did, but because he needs to "sort some stuff out" (which apparently means jumping into the arms of another man in under a week, but I digress). Unfortunately, I'm still madly in love with him. Oh, and we're roommates. Anyway, I'm looking for songs that I can buy from iTunes Music Store to express the mixture of sadness / betrayal / anger / hopelessness / listlessness / general malaise / etc. I'm feeling. Do you have a mixtape for the dumped?

Where should I buy gas for my car?

I am trying to be more conscious of the political ramifications of my spending habits (ie, Target instead of Walmart because Walmart == Republican, and Target seems civic-minded), and now it occurs to me that I should do the same for gas. Most places are priced about the same (within 2-3 cents) and since I drive a Toyota Echo, gas mileage isn't really a problem (I average around 37 mpg), so price isn't (much) of a concern. So, based on past failures and forward-looking research, factoring in politics for a left-leaning gay man who cares about the environment and progressive social causes, where should I spend my gas money so that it won't be used for evil?
