Ask post: I want to travel the West Coast for cheap
I'm not interested in hostels if the temperature is consistently above 40 degrees. Fahrenheit.

I would love to mark all of these as best answers but then it would be obnoxious to read, so I highlighted two and gave up.

Legality doesn't concern me. There is a balance between the letter of the law and the spirit of the law. My plan is to bring one rucksack, wear flip flops, maybe a bedroll, a white gas stove, and top ramen (maruchan). My pocket knife as well.

I'd love to bring a glock (a little too theatrical for my tastes) or something to intimidate people but I'd rather have a scary looking pocket knife.

I greatly appreciate all the responses.

Ask post: bloody goats and such.
Get Strong's Concordance so you can look up the root meanings of the words. The Ajax Bible, by MetaFilter's own walljim, is a KJV translation with built-in links to Strong's, Greek morphology, and Theopedia, a Christian wiki of theology created and maintained by MetaFilter's own aaronshaf. Theopedia is written from a Reformed (Calvinist) perspective, so look elsewhere for more evangelical interpretations. The Theopedia entry on the Book of Revelation is pretty sparse, but they will have plenty... [more]

Also, concordances and commentaries as I mentioned before are helpful for context - there is a lot of intertextual dialogue between the various books of the Bible - prophecies being made, and then later fulfilled, common themes and symbolic imagery (Christ archetype, idea of cleansing/purification, covenant based religion, 'enlightenment').

The books of Micah, Jeremiah, Isiah, Ezekiel, Hosea, Daniel, all deal with Hebrew prophecy. It is an incredible part of antiquity's... [more]

EarBucket, yeah, you are right. There is a huge body of literature on post-millenialism, however, and all the credit is given to the foundation Calvin laid. But it's been about 6 years since I've actually studied about it or cared. Memory fails me.

Ask post: Virgina is for lushes
(RE the DUI consent argument in thread: In Michigan and Ohio for example, implied consent DUI means if you refuse a field breathalyzer test, they arrest you, take you to the station, do a test there or a blood test at a hospital, and then suspend your license for a minimum of 6 months.) My suggestion is to just not drive in Ohio, their traffic enforcement is, to say the least, Draconian.

Ask post: How do you deal with a jerk among friends?
I have met some incredibly argumentative people - some of them like to argue, some just like to hear themselves talk. Arguing back or telling them to shutup never stops anything, it only makes things worse most of the time.

Someone suggested saying this:

"I'm not sure why you feel compelled to challenge everything we say. This is not a debate team. If you don't like us, just don't talk to us. No skin off our noses.... [more]

You would have a lot of trouble doing business in China with that attitude :P

I smoke and am able to find work, albeit not on credit, so I hope that I am at least marginally trustworthy. And my friends who smoke are in my opinion more trustworthy than myself.

I would say don't judge someone just by one habit they have. It used to be that most folks smoked. Look for other indicators of trustworthyness. Do they get nervous and not look you in the... [more]

I've produced and worked on a few little indie and student projects, so this is what I've learned:

Film Art by Bordwell and Thompson is the standard text for anyone interested in film. It demonstrates the formal elements of the medium and explains how all the pieces fit together. It's quite readable and interesting, using lots of pictures and examples.

This is great advice! I don't want to mark everything as best answer though thanks to the light shade of green :/

slipperywhenwet: if you're willing to drive 8 or 9 hours then absolutely! sorry about that logistical issue :(

dicaxpuella: you just named what will now be my ending song. Thanks!

Since it falls on a Tuesday I may have to do it the Saturday before, so that some of the more paranoid people who like to party have sufficient time to let the dread set in.

Thanks for all the great ideas everyone!

Ask post: Is getting a BA from this school even worth my time?
Grad schools typically love people with 'non-traditional' degrees. A friend of mine who majored in Spanish and Music easily got into medical school. He just had to do some of the pre-med required courses (chem, bio, physics), then pass the MCATS. I know a lot of med schools and law schools are actively encouraging people that did not major in biology or political science to apply. I know this because a friend of mine is a student admissions rep at Notre Dame, and he... [more]

Ask post: A protest throng
It happens via the web these days, but different protest organizers have been doing this for a long time. The recent immigration related protests were all organized in LA for example with big posters all around the city as well as a ton of web-based organization telling people where to be and what to bring. It has an aggregate effect as well. Say for a hypothetical example, a website like moveon.org sponsors a rally in a city like Ann Arbor when Bush comes to town, every left-wing related... [more]

b33j, sounds like a tough job to manage all that stuff - thanks for answering my questions because it narrows down what would constitute good suggestions.

CVS stands for Concurrent Version System, it's used by software developers (and web developers with huge numbers of files) to identify what needs to be done and to log changes. Ask post: Sweat electricity
Yelling at Nothing is entirely correct. Bim is also correct. Indeed, batteries cannot store electricity, they store energy. Chemical energy in fact. The key is converting it back and forth without losing too much in the process. Self-discharging also becomes a problem, as well as the lifecycle of the batteries, basically creating even more maintenance costs.

Perhaps some sort of lithium battery application like the type used in hybrids (supplemented by the energy... [more]

Ask post: How can I cut this weight?
I'm probably repeating stuff you already know, but sometimes it is good to hear it again:
Do NOT starve yourself. This will goof up your metabolism, and instead of getting rid of fat, it will go into survival mode and whenever you ingest food (cuz you'll have to eventually), it will more likely be turned into glucose. Even worse, you can lose muscle mass.

Ask post: we don't need no education
Everything your school does should be a matter of public record. You need to educate yourself:

Find out how your school gets its money (county or municipal funding via millage or some other method). Find out who sets, approves, and oversees the school's budget. Find out how the school board is governed and how its members are selected or elected. Who can vote on matters relating to the school - city, township, county residents?

From there, you... [more]

I have friends of friends in North Oakland and instead of walking from the Bart to their home, they call and get a ride if it's dark.

As a rule of thumb, cops don't respond until there is a victim. They do much more criminal catching than prevention. Don't be a victim.
