MeFi post: Snapshots from the Office: Public Affairs Staff Show Strains of Social Discord
Yes, the Bush administration is fucking retarded. Please continue to state the obvious. Eventually I'll completely get over my desire to sit at MetaFilter and hit F5.

Keep up the good work russilwvong!

MeFi post: Brad Pitts Zep Shocker!
Why do they get to use this stuff? I'm a U.S. citizen and I don't get to use it, yet some foreign-owned private corporation has the right to use it?

I'm sure that there is a 'really good reason.' My opinion is, if you want dirty business and politics, DeBeers is way bigger and more sinister than say Enron or MCI Worldcom... there is a great link detailing the history of the modern diamond industry here. It is very long but after reading it, I'm sure... [more]

MeFi post: Watching every summer movie
Why on earth would anyone want to pay money to see 90% of those films? Free air-conditioning in summer?
posted to MetaFilter by tweak at 2:32 PM on May 30, 2006
It would be swell if you would go to the movies that really suck, watch them, and then demand a refund from the theater for screening such a terrible film.

Then you can still blog about it. And then you can donate the money to charity. That way, I would admire your project heartily. As it is now, there are movie critics who do what you are about to do, so that's going to be a somewhat disinterested 'meh' for me.

MeFi post: ChillsFilter
That gave me shivers.

Rougy: Detroit fans are shitty. When I was a kid, my hockey team went to a game and my teammate got yelled at for wearing a Chicago Blackhawks jacket. We were 12, and a drunken adult Wings fan was yelling at us. That's all I have to say about Detroit.

The road to utopia is paved with the bodies of the innocent. Not that they would care, but fascists and communists should take heed. Thanks for the link.

Makoto: I would say when the ideal of utopia is primary, and all other standards are subsumed for that ideal, including things like personhood, human rights, and so on. Basically forcing square pegs into round holes and damn the consequences. Things like no balance between the good of society and the good of the individual.

I don't think utopian violence is ever 'good' if that is the goal.

Historical Examples: French Revolution, Nazi Germany,... [more]

rougy, you worry me. My point was that the attempt at utopia often leads to disaster, and that many incredibly tragic events in human history started out with the intentions of making the world a 'better' place (according to their definition of better). This happens for many reasons, to name one: many Utopian or proto-Utopian idealists ignore a simple truth about human nature, that is, greed. Another one is being blind to their own arrogance.

Utopia is... [more]

I don't think it's a fallacy because I was trying to make a distinction between the notion of a Utopia and the actual practice throughout history of trying to make it happen.

I think I get what you're saying now. For example, I grant that in Looking Backward, or Utopia, or The New Atlantis and The Great Instauration, the achievements of those societies happen rather peacefully and are pretty successful. I am sorry for the comments that ventured into ad hominem, they... [more]

While I miss it a lot too, I totally agree that he made the right decision. Counter-example: the Simpsons. There is now no potential for nostalgia with that show.

4 of the top 5 are white males

You know, if I don't look at the picture of the author, if it's included at all, their race or even gender is the last thing I think about, you PC-hypochondriac.

I bet 3 of the 4 white males are JEWS too, part of the illuminati to keep repressed minorities out of Barnes and Noble!

Please, people, I am not complaining. I am observing a phenomenon -- albeit a phenomenon of an ultimately silly exercise.

Not really that much of a phenomenon when you consider that white people (especially men) have traditionally gotten the best educations in America for well nigh 380 years now, give or take. Obviously, this trend is balancing out, so I'm sure in a generation or two we'll see the demographics of 'great' authors change a bit more.

oh shutup yerfatma, bloggers aren't THAT hated.... ok, except by so-called 'normal' or 'respectable' people in positions of authority like that HR douchebag who was smiling smugly (god I fucking hate smug people). Jessa's story distressed me greatly because the way she was treated reminded me so very much of being in Grade 9 and being disciplined in school for saying bad things OUTSIDE of school (such as 'this school sucks' on my website) as the principal smugly explained the rules. I think that the far left and right can agree on a few things - On the national level: reduced military spending and intervention in foreign affairs (essentially an end to pre-emptive strikes and a move to more multilateral international policies). Hooray for nationalizing industry? Only when politicians we agree with do it. No matter if it's a good standard of action or not.

How would most of the commenters in this thread (save maybe the last 5-10) feel if fucking Silvio Berlusconi nationalized the tourism industry in Italy? They'd flip shit, because the state shouldn't be tyrannizing business owned by individuals in such an egregious manner. Exxon is still owned by people - shareholders in fact.

TimesSelect still sucks, and pages like this aren't resizing to my browser, forcing a horizontal scrollbar onto FireFox.

Overall, I think it does look better - more like an actual newspaper. Though I think the design is a bit understated with the light gray text for navigation on the left of the front page - I ignored it at first because it looked like a Google textad.
