MeTa post: What ever happened to respecting people's opinions?
I don’t know if I feel entirely comfortable that there is an entire thread dedicated to “changing someone’s mind”.

Even worse, there seem to be several massively funded media campaigns dedicated to this same nefarious activity.

MeTa post: Thanks, mattbucher!
My building super was a Mason, and I went to his Masonic funeral service.

When I asked him (while he was alive) what would qualify someone for membership he said, "If I were to leave you alone with my daughter and a drawer full of cash, I shouldn't have to think, should I trust him? It should never even enter my mind."

MeFi post: You certainly do remind me of Adolf Hitler.
A classic from 1998.

Actually, and I'm not kidding, I first saw this as a fax in 1989. Before people's Godwin defenses were up, I found it truly amazing how almost everyone instinctively backpedaled once you compared them to Hitler.

The deed had been done with such effortlessness, such quotidian blaséness, that my friend was nonplussed.“It feels so normal,” she said.

on·plussed [ nòn plúst ] 1. confused: surprised, confused, and uncertain what to do or say

It really begs the question whether or not that writer has a dictionary.

I always vaguely assumed this took place somewhere, done by someone, but I'd never myself dreamed of doing it.

That's how I felt when I watched someone "tip" Brooklyn police officers into not breaking up a huge loft party where there was an unlicensed cash bar. (I didn't see the cash change hands, they stepped into a closed room with the owner, then left abruptly. "What do you think just happened," he said.)

demiurge: with the original meaning of nonplussed, the person would have been speechless, and therefore unable to reply with “It feels so normal.” The supposed meaning, of unruffled, is gaining traction with the non-prescriptivists.

MeFi post: neurobiology of trust
... financial losses aren't simply monetary: because of how the brain computes trust, they are also personal. ... Until those financial rewards start to feel predictable again - and that may take a long, long time - investors will continue to be wary of each other.

Does an understanding of current events in the stock market really benefit from this particular overlay? Or the cigar just a cigar?

all these approaches boil down to either removing the paint or sealing it in

What about one last try at ventilating? Get several huge industrial fans, and set them up so the air has a way in and a way out. Other fans pointed directly at painted surfaces. Also apply heat. If you need to stop the fans to get the heat up, so be it, but use heaters to get the temperature up over 90 degrees.
posted to Ask Metafilter by StickyCarpet at 7:59 AM on October 8, 2008
But it didn’t get hot enough in the basement even with heat up full

Since all this ventilating is going on, perhaps she could add one or more gas-fired heaters, such as the turbo-jet styled salamander heaters used at construction sites.

The documentary Born Rich was just mentioned on the blue, and there was an interesting answer given by one of the female subjects as to why she only dates rich men, especially because she already has all the money she could ever want. She said she had dated a non-rich guy who was appalled that she spent $6,000 on purses, and thought she should feed the poor or something with that money. But collecting expensive purses was her hobby, and she didn't see why he should stop her.... [more]

Expect questions. "Why aren't you drinking?" Have some ready answers. The one I use is "I like it too much." Another answer: "I thought I'd give my liver a bit of a break."

My brother-in-law says, "I kind of got ahead of myself and drank up my allotment."

Gotti reigned for six years as the head of New York's Gambino crime family, promoting himself to the position according to normal mafia guidelines by assassinating his predecessor, Paul "Big Paulie" Castellano. It was a testament to his passion for the Hollywood myth of organised crime in America that he arranged for the killing to be carried out by a gang of hitmen in matching trenchcoats who surprised Castellano as he left a Manhattan steakhouse.... Pollomacho, you're right in the one case of King salmon, which are freshwater, but Steelheads are only used for sushi if they are smoked. Those other Salmon are just passing through from the saltwater they grow in.
