After 50 years of success, my Mom's favorite chocolate cake recipe is now failing to meet expectations. Betty Crocker blames Crisco, and Crisco denies blame. Not only do the cakes not rise like before, they tend to sag in the middle. It's a devil's food recipe from the original BC Cookbook, and she has been using the same ingredients forever. I calibrated the oven, and even watched her make one to insure it wasn't due to an error by a sometimes forgetful 84 year old baking Ninja. Any ideas on how Mom can get her Mojo back?

Please help me restore my user settings (Win XP Pro). All of my wife's personal settings (also folders and files) have beem sent to the recycle bin upon restart. I tried to use the recycle bin restore feature, but to no avail. There is only one user account, and that seems to be set to new machine status. She wants her desktop back ! Last time, you guys saved my butt...can you do it again? Thanks.

My wife's WinXP laptop is now showing this error: UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
I've poked around the net to find a cure , but nothing works. Safe Mode just shows a string of entries and locks up, Normal Mode returns to the blue screen. I tried to re-install the OS , but although I can hear the disc spinning, it does not show up on the screen. What to do? ...and for bonus points, can I save the data on the HD?
Thanks in advance.

This article tells people to check out askmetafilter.com, not ask.metafilter.com. The link goes to AskMeFi though, not askmetafilter.com, which appears to be a shady spam and pop up info site...and I refuse to link to it.

A shipping company totaled a TV from my MIL's estate. My paperwork says that our shipment was insured for $.60 per lb. Does this mean that the 2 year old, $1200 HDTV will only net me $48, because the pile of circuits that's left weighs in at 80 lbs?

Is
Airborne science or snake oil ? The official
website is flashy, but short on empirical evidence, and even admits that there is "no cure" for the common cold. The first doubts were from
ABC News. Then
David Cowan blogged about it. Now
Michael Shermer from the Scientific American, and publisher of
Skeptic weighs in an article called
Airborne Baloney

For a moment, I was logged on as another user (darthduckie ? sp) It happened on AskMe, but when I came here, I was lobstah again. I didn't try to post as that user, so I'm not sure how deeply I was logged in. Does this happen much?

Two nights ago I woke up whlie I was in a vivid dream. Last night, just before I fell asleep, the previous night's dream came back to me out of nowhere. Not a repeat, but more of a " previously on" moment like TV shows do. Has anyone else experienced this or know what causes it ? Sure, there's some

The Smoking GOP
This was a little satire site I made for "The Contagious Festival" at the Huffington Post, but I missed the deadline for various reasons. I used a variation on The Smoking Gun format, complete with fake documents, Photoshops, and even some silly ads. I hope the liberals out here will get a chuckle or two, and if you are conservative...well, you probably won't like it.

I use Yahoo Sitebuilder for my wife's site, but I also used it to build a small satire site which I want to post via FTP. How does a tech challenged crustacean turn the Sitebuilder code into regular html?

Buck O'Neil, 94, was a
star player for the Kansas City Monarchs, of the
The Negro Leagues, the first black coach hired by
Major League Baseball, one of the founders and current Board Chairman of
The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, a scout, who signed such stars as
Ernie Banks, and
Lou Brock, was
denied his last chance to enter baseball's
Hall of Fame this week. Considered by many to be the unofficial " Ambassador of Baseball", Buck was most diplomatic in his response, saying:
"Shed no tears for Buck," he says. "No, no. Ol' God's been good to me. You can see that, don't you? If I'm a Hall of Famer for you, that's all I need. Just keep loving ol' Buck."
", and
" You think about this,' he said. "Here I am, the grandson of a slave. And here the whole world was excited about whether I was going into the Hall of Fame or not. We've come a long ways. Before, we never even thought about anything like that. America, you've really grown and you're still growing."
Keith Olbermann is outraged...I am just sad.

When
is
A Blog, just a blog ?
Boston Sports Media Watch, a blog claiming as its purpose: "to provide a resource for Boston sports fans both locally and transplanted, who may not be able to keep up with the plethora of information available in the newspapers, on the radio and television and on-line.", has challenged the validity of
Boston Dirt Dogs, another local blog's content. BSMW founder, Bruce Allen citing
This Announcement, claims a relationship between Silva and Boston.com, a subsidy of
The Boston Globe, which is in turn a property of
The New York Times Company, and thinks Silva should be held to the same standard as mainline journalists. This came about after Boston Dirt Dogs fell victim to an email hoax concerning former
Boston Red Sox superstar
Nomar Garciaparra. Allen sent an inquiry to Boston.com editor Teresa M. Hanafin, who replied
" Oh, Bruce, please -- spare me. It's a blog, for God's sake. Lighten up. Given some of the content on your website, you're hardly in a position to be flinging mud."
But the question remains: Should a major newspaper company sponsor a blog without holding it to the same standards it tries to follow, especially if said blog blurs the line between truth and satire?

CBS is reporting
that George W. Bush acknowledged using
marijuana during a recorded phone conversation. The conversations were recorded by Doug Wead, a former aide to George W. Bush's father, beginning in 1998, when Mr. Bush was weighing a presidential bid, until just before the Republican National Convention in 2000.
