I just moved to the bay area this past Saturday- anyone care to meet somewhere for food, drinks, etc?

What sort of jobs are there that involve working with animals, aside from the non-obvious (zoo, vet, dog walker).

Interviewing in Sunnyvale Thursday, nothing to do for 24 hours after, and I'd love to meet the locals...

A recruitment firm is between me and the job I want. Can I cut them out of the loop if no contract was made?

My trusty UMAX Astra 3400 started scanning solid gray tonight. Any thoughts on what could be wrong, and how to resuscitate it? (if even possible)

Users commenting just to say they haven't heard of the topic of discussion is 100% noise and garbage.

My sister got my Mom
this teakettle for Christmas. Problem is, every few times we make tea, the water tastes terrible and smells funky- almost a wet chlorine smell.

In response to
this thread: A little GreaseMonkey script to pop-out all the flash players (that use playlists) into new tabs/windows.
Enjoy!

Could someone show this Linux n00b to use ffmpeg to convert a folder full of PNGs to an MPEG? The system I'm running doesn't have Mencoder, and I don't have root (it's a Dreamhost shell account). Thanks!

My close female friend is at college, and faces some shady walks back to her house. There have been problems with muggings and assaults on and around campus, and I'm advocating she have something on her person for protection, i.e. pepper spray. She's a very capable and confident woman, and she says she'll get something "eventually".

With AskMe getting lots of press (as in
here) as a unit seperate from Metafilter (meaning, blue, grey, white, mauve, etc.), there should really be a message on ask letting the droves of new users know that it is a part of a larger community, with other features, a resource for post discussion and discourse, and a user base not completely dedicated to the green. People who enter through Angel Island should know New York exists. /metaphor)

Ooh ooh- I've got an idea. Picture this- you open a thread (AskMe or MeFi), and at the top of the thread, there is a small note that says "This thread is currently being debated in MetaTalk.", with a link to the MeTa thread. This way, people have no excuse for taking a big steamy dump in threads. People posting MeTa complaints could fill in a field with the post ID, and some database magic could occur to link the two. Just floating this out there to see what others think.

What's the best seasoning for baking a salmon fillet in the oven? My girlfriend's making it for dinner, and I'm advising. Since this is dinner, quick responses would be appreciated. Thanks!

ActionSheets: pulling javascript out of HTML- simply.
A no-nonsense, fairly lightweight JavaScript library designed to allow developers to keep their JavaScript events in a separate "Cascading Action Sheet", except minus the cascading. By placing a reference to such a sheet in a element, the library will load the sheet, and apply its action rules to the document. The library depends on, and takes heavy advantage of the Prototype.js library.

I'm writing a cross-browser JavaScript library that will allow me to apply events (onmouseover, click, etc) to elements using what look like stylesheets:
a {mouseover:someFunction;} In writing a parser for these files, I've come upon a stumbling block.

Is there a reason for a spectrum analyzer on the player that clearly does absolutely nothing related to the music playing? I've noticed this on a few other flash mp3 players, including Myspace's. Is there a way to make it not there?

My friend has a dual 2GHz Apple G5, and is unable to run Virtual PC 6.1 on his computer. He knows Virtual PC 7 will work, but is unsure if he can buy solely the upgrade, or if he will need a full version of Virtual PC 7. Anyone have any insight into this situation? Thanks in advance!

My band recorded this for a Song Fight. It's quirky casio acuostic rock, with just a hint of out of tune accordion, and percussion supplied by a djembe. That's me singing.

I too have been taken with MuFi Madness™. I excitedly went to showcase my band's work, and- Oh! the horror! I was presented with an error on upload:
The MIME type of the uploaded file "audio/x-mpeg" was not accepted by the server.
I use Audacity for my mp3 encoding, and am at my wits' end. Is there a way to rebrand a file's MIME type, or convert it? I'm quite eager to get in on the action, but need your help. Thanks, fellow citizens.

In 4th grade, We sang a song where the title sounded like "Massalanga Nay Nay". It was an African song, but not like real African, just cheesy grade school multicultural. Anyone have any inkling as to the real title or spelling, or where I can find the sheet music to this song?

There seems to be a contingent of people on this website (we all know who they are) who feel the need to pollute threads that would be otherwise relevant, reasonable, and/or interesting. They come in, spew their opinion, and then proceed to turn thought-provoking material into a three ring circus. After having to sift through heaps of vitrol to find comments that even remotely relate to the topic at hand twice today, I've had enough. Your need to have your last word in a public meeting space that prides itself on civil, topical conversation is disgustingly revealing of your immaturity and arrogance. As a user of this site who is primarily a lurker, I want to make a statement on behalf of those people who come here for the fascinating content: If you feel the need to troll and argue, shut up already.

I recently saw a MasterCard commercial set in a gas station/convenicence store. In it, the cashier (in the trademark "Priceless" voice) rings up their items, etc. Is that really the guy behind the voice, or some clever dubbing? If so, good for that guy, leveraging voice talent into an on-screen role and all.

Out of boredom, I have decided to cobble together a bare-bones computer (read: pile of wires and parts on a desk). Something seems to be atwitter with the BIOS on the motherboard, and it won't progress beyond the standard bios screen. We are not talking anything life threatening, just the end of my boredom buster, but does anyone know how I might identify the motherboard, and prod the BIOS back to life?
