Most scenic route from LA to Detroit?

This weekend I will be driving a roadster from Las Angeles to Detroit with a buddy. Help me find winding, hilly or mountainy roads with great views of nature to see on my way. Twisty mountain roads are always preferred over long straightaways. (Bonus if they aren't too much out of my way, thought I don't mind changing my route somewhat.) So far I am thinking of passing through Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, and Rocky Mountain National Park. (Google map)

Ghost Doctor?

I am going to visit a doctor, but my Bluecross Blueshield/billing will not show his name and instead will show the doctor he reports to (according to the frond desk person), since he isn't in today. Sounds kind of strange to me. Is there anything I should be asking/should be aware of? (Or is this normal?)

In search of good ripe tomatoes for home-made juicing

Tomato Filter - As a kid I used to get fresh hand-squeezed tomato juice. It was heavenly. (I lived in a 3rd world country, where vegetables didn't taste like cardboard.) Where can I get very ripe (even if some are close to rotting) tomatoes for cheap or relatively cheap in the S.E. Michigan area? Organic or home-grown would be a definite plus, but I'll take what I can get...

Rule of thumb about who to invite at work to your wedding?

How do I decide who at work to invite to my wedding? I'd love to invite everyone on my 20 person team - even the ones I only have worked with with five minutes here or there (Most of them.) But I'm afraid by inviting them, I may be making them feel obliged to come, lest I get offended. (I wouldn't at all.) Is there some sort of rule of thumb here?

Protector Plan + Marriage, Yay or Nay?

I am getting married in three months and just got off the phone with citi credit cards. Their credit protector plan will credit (meaning I don't have to pay them back) my account for two months' minimum payment when I get married.

Placeholders In Place Of Images In Powerpoint

Help! Time-sensitive: My boss's boss, when editing, sees transparent placeholders inside his powerpoint everywhere there is an image (Images do show up, though, in actual slideshow - so they're there). Changing zoom didn't fix it. Everyhting shows up ok on my computer. My Google-fu is failing me, and he's counting on me - got a quick fix?

Log Cabin Rental (In Michigan)

I'm in S.E. Michigan and looking to rent a log cabin for a weekend with some friends. Aiming for Sept 16/17. Do you have a good place you think we should look at? Or know where I can I get any reviews of log cabin rental places?

Better blank DVDs for long-term storage?

Of blank DVD manufacturers (Memorex,Verbatim, Best Buy's Dynex, etc.), are there any that stand out as better for long-term storage of data?

MacGyver Cell Phone Charging Hack

MacGyver Cell Phone Charger Hack: I'm on vacation and stuck in the middle of suburbia in SoCal with: no car or any store nearby, a working Nokia charger that's useless to me, a Motorola cell phone (t720 pic) that is about to go dead, and sadly, no Motorola charger. Badly in need of charging this guy.

Super-Easily Make Images Smaller?

I have a friend who at her job often needs to take 100 or so jpg pictures (at 800k or more a pop) from her digital camera, then zip and email them. How do I help automate the picture dimension reduction part of the process (the aim is to reduce filesize) to a very green newbie's level? Seen an ultra easy, uncluttered program to do this?

Desktop shortcut placement strategies

Does anyone else put shortcuts in particular spots on their desktop, to make it a brainless activity to run them? (Problem: When my resolution is changed, and icons get mixed up.)

$100 Haircut?

How might I go about finding a top of the line hair salon. I am considering trying to settle into a new haircut - even a $100+ price tag is ok this one time. (I'm in S.E. Michigan.)

Saving a stream of links to my HD

How could I capture the steady stream of popularly ranked links on a web site (in this case http://del.icio.us/popular/). I thought it would be a snap with an RSS-enabled site - but after googling/trying different RSS readers, I am overwhelmed and have not found a solution. The idea is to capture the links on my hard drive so I don't miss anything if I'm away for a few days. (Bonus if I can weed out the repeats!)

Greeting card with personalized audio?

How do I give someone a greeting card that has a short recorded audio clip of my choice on it? Surely someone has created a quick and cheap way to personalize a greeting card with a disposable audio device, yes?

Real vanilla/almond "extract", minus the alcohol content?

FoodFilter: I love vanilla/almond/etc. extract. But I cannot have even tiny amounts of alcohol in my food (for religious reasons). But I want real flavor. Googling has taught me that alcohol is put in all extracts to preserve and to prevent evaporation. But could there truly be no other way? How do I get avoid the bleh imitation stuff while still getting no alcohol in my flavoring?

Temporary accomodations with a family.

My friend just arrived from overseas on a visa after having completed medical school. He is applying to get into a residency program. Meanwhile, he wants to stay with a family here in the SE Michigan area. Have you had good experiences/heard good things about any organizations that might be able to match him up with a family to live with for a temporary period of time?

"Complex" font?

You know those fonts that marketers use in your junk mail that look just like handwritten fonts, but if you look closely at all the W's, etc. you quickly realize they look exactly the same, and so you know it was a machine? I am not in marketing, but it got me wondering if there is a way to get such a (maybe call it "multilayered" or "complex") font, where each letter "A", for example, will be randomly chosen from multiple A's available within the font.

Separation of data and program files

Is it true that good practice dictates one ought to separate program files from data files (onto different partitions)? What are some good ways you accomplish this? What about the problem of WinXP putting the "Documents and Settings" folder (containing user desktops, outlook .pst file, etc.) in the same partition as the "Program Files" and "Windows" folders?

"chmod 755 ." means?

ecommerce software directions say: "chmod 644 etc/config.php chmod 755 ." I set set chmod 644 for the first folder. What is "."? In other words, how do I "chmod 755 ." from above? This is ecommerce software, so permissions probably are more important than usual. I just had a hard time finding what the "." refers to when googling.

How to get a Windows XP

I know Windows XP has some sort of restore feature, but how about a good independent program that can let me take a "snapshot" of my new clean WinXP installation + Documents and Settings + Program Files so I can maybe burn to (probably multiple) DVDs and then easily restore at some point in the future. (This must be a common thing, but my googling proved unfruitful.)

How

Have you ever come across a site that gives you driving directions, like yahoo maps or mapquest, but lets you fiddle a bit with which roads to take/not to take? I want to be able to avoid traffic jams, or find directions that make the least possible turns and change of roads. (Like when I don't want to risk getting lost and ending up in a bad area of town after dark.)
