Birth of the National Health Service - How the state of the nation's health became a political ideal

The NHS at 60. The National Health Service is 60 on July 5th. Take a look at documents, audio and video related to the birth and growth of this "radical plan."

A blog featuring artworks and artists who are...

Art Inconnu A blog featuring artworks and artists who are little known, perhaps under-appreciated and in some cases forgotten by the mainstream. After years spent pursuing my passion for collecting auction catalogues and searching online sales and archives for interesting works by so-called "minor" artists (and purchasing the odd affordable piece) I felt it was time to collate some of the images and personalities I have collected and learned about along the way.

The Silver Swan is a life-size musical automaton built in 1773 from silver and glass, now housed in the Bowes Museum in County Durham.

Modern WW2 style clothing designer

Looking for a UK clothing designer's website I saw a few years ago. As well as making tweed jackets and other garments, they had another "arm" of the business that specialised in vintage looking, quirky, World War 2 era replica work clothing that was trendy and quite pricey rather than historically accurate, as well as vintage kitchen and garden tools.

Looking for a specific, well known photo of Yorkshire

Looking for a photo/photographer I saw in a documentary a few years back. It was a black and white shot taken in the 1950's/60's and featured a typical small Yorkshire (or at least northern UK) village on a steep hillside at night. It was a long exposure and the glowing street and window lights illuminated the buildings and made for a very striking scene against the black sky and surrounding hills.

People are selling my rubbish.

Recently I took a large quantity of household junk to my local council run landfill/refuse site. 3 weeks later these items, which I presumed would be destroyed and buried, are appearing at local auctions.

This user links to his own blog in six answers from the thirteen he has provided for other AskMe users, including recommending his own blog as one of his favourites. His only comment on the blue links to his blog. I am reluctant to bring this up as the answers he provides are generally helpful, on the other hand he seems more likely to help if he can link to his website. I guess Matt can decide is this is insidious spamming or not.

Someone recebtly created a FPP from scanned magazine pages they had uploaded. Beneath the mantra of "best of the web" how far can one go? I often find great subjects for a post are not adequately documented online. In that case is it okay to upload some images, or create a little page to fill in the blanks in anotherwise post-worthy subject?

Good modern songs aboot God.

What are some of the most overtly religious modern pop/rock/mainstream songs that sound great, and more importantly believable, in their devotion rather than jusy cringeworthy or preachy? Preachy titles also welcomed for comparison.

Eric Grohe Murals. From kinda cheesy to monumental, and with the ubiquitous floating Jesus and teary-eyed Liberty. Whatever the subject, his work is technically exceptional.

Gregory Crewdson

The photographs of Gregory Crewdson are variably described as disturbing (nsfw,) otherworldly, filmic and sometimes just technically stunning. He readily acknowledges the influence of David Lynch and Steven Spielberg, so it's no surprise that some of Hollywood's finest are queuing up to appear in his big budget images of skewed suburbia.

Joash Woodrow - Discovered artist

Joash Woodrow. An artist who's story is not unlike that of Henry Darger - a recluse who's lifetime of work has only recently been discovered. But unlike Darger, Woodrow was British, and a trained artist who studied alongside Frank Auerbach and Peter Blake. And he's still alive. Now this pensioner, who's lifetime of painting, drawing and sculpture was discovered by accident while his family were halfway through incinerating it, is being called "one of the great British artists of the 20th Century" and the price of his paintings, which call to mind Picasso, Soutine and Rouault, are skyrocketing. Aged 77, and confined to a nursing home, he is unwilling to ever paint again or discuss his art, and it is unclear if he is enjoying the benefits of his belated success.
