Imagine being excited about a Paul McCartney album
He was in The Beatles. Plenty of musicians from far lesser bands were resting on their laurels decades ago. That he's still in the studio trying to be brave and take his music in different directions should be applauded.

Colour my world with recommendations
Scenes from a Marriage is what you're looking for, I'd get the extended version rather than the normal theatrical release.
Two similar (less romantic) recent films that feature very sparse casts, sets, and a lot of good dialogue are Tape (also starring Ethan Hawke) and Closer. If you want to explore further you could do worse than rent a selection of Ingmar Bergman films if you haven't seen them, a lot of the elements you list as enjoying are present in Bergman's films.... It's your own responsibility to keep your job, not the other members of metafilter. If you think you might get sacked for what you look at on the internet then stay off the internet and get on with your work.

Tattoos on the Big Cheese?
sageleaf, his wife is speaking from a position of ignorance and her advice is next to useless.
If you want the tattoo then get it, and deal with the consequences - if any - as they arise. I don't think this is a very answerable question as only you know the dynamic of where you work and what your options might be in the near future.
As it stands you don't think it will be a problem with your employees or those you work alongside. You want the... [more]

Heads Above Water
Done from photos with colour refrences probably taken from the dropper tool in Paintshop.
Still, as pointed out above they are beautifully painted, and the subjects are great. Especially the first few at the top of the page. Must be hugely enjoyable to paint those.

How can I force myself to write?
Ignore the writing room and get out of the house. No phone, no laptop, pick up a pad and pen and hit a bar or cafe you haven't been to before, have a coffee or a beer, and write. It needn't be the finished product but you should find there is little else to do in that enironment but write something, unlike your house where there are always distractions.
Having said that, the "enormous resistance" sounds a lot like a real fear of failure. A fear of even... [more]

Sprechen Zie Deutsch?
Rosetta Stone is not perfect, and nothing can replace intervention from a good teacher, but it's probably the best you can get for learning at home. It's really fun to use and there is no chance of you straying out of boredom or whatever.

Jean Grae on music.metafilter
This is an amazing idea, I love Jean Grae and I'll pledge $20. Whatever we send had better be good, and I would hope the decision would be open to input from the community.

Yeah let her deal with the lyrics. Themed on something suitable, like the aforementioned internet, and hopefully mentioning MeFi by name.

I really think Jean should be writing the lyrics. While it would be nice to have it mention Metafilter, the internet or whatever, I don't think we should be delivering a list of 50 in-jokes that have to be crowbarred in.
My $20 is ready to go whenever the receipient is decided.

Bisected Picnic Table
Looks to me like the table top has been removed at some point then wrongly reattached upside down. That beam would normally feature on the underside of the table top.

The photo linked by nitsuj shows the bar in exactly the same position on the underside, on several of the tables.

So....like turducken said, if you Google his name, you'll find many references to his style as modern or modern abstract.
This is not abstract art. People who don't understand the meaning of the word abstract in relation to painting probably shouldn't be handing out advice about modern art.

Lend your Euroknowledge.
Take a look at Busabout (routes here,) it's super cheap and flexible and a lot of people prefer it to the rail option. They also pick up and drop off right outside hostels so it's super convenient. Other than that I'd highly recommend St Christopher's hostels, especially the one in Paris which has just recently opened.

Catball!
I don't think there is any way a cat will respond favourably to being crammed in something akin to a hamster ball. I imagine the vast majority of cats would be probably distressed at this and would not grasp the concept of running around in it anyway. I'd alter its diet or learn to love it the way it is.

Laser pen is a good idea. Cats also chase string and a multitude of other items, and will do this repeatedly in a circle in a small room. Perfect for an indoor cat.
Most cats would be distressed by being put in a plastic ball, or any confined space. You can test this out with your cat by putting a box or upturned laundry basket over it when it's sitting somewhere. The whole idea is a non starter from the very begining because you've little chance of getting the cat in... [more]
