My brain free-associates all over the place when I'm trying to fall asleep. The other night during that time, a question popped into my head: the mods are all relatively within the same age range. Matt, decades from now, when you're tired of running the show, will you hand it down to "Mefi: the Next Generation"? Or close up shop?

Didn't see this in the FAQ: is there an online venue where one can chat live with fellow Mefites? I know there's nothing official sponsored by the site, but what's the most popular of any home-brewed solutions?

With
mattdidthat's permission (and with mathowie's kind hosting), I wanted to share the Metafilter
user ID card — and,
especially, the insane and utter brilliance of the included
old-comic-ads-style insert — both of which mattdidthat provides free of charge to people who donate to any one of a handful of organizations which he lists
here.

As far as I can tell, there's three factors at play with deleted posts – moderator opinion, initial crowd opinion (comments), and initial crowd opinion (flagging). And I'm kind of seeking to understand how it interplays,

Matt, I just wanted you to know that
the Dawson's Creek version of you (analogy source) has been guest starring in recent episodes of SyFy's "Warehouse 13." Unless it's just me. But the character can spout technobabble at the drop of a hat, and the way they've got the character costumed has been reminding me of those photos I've seen of mathowie.

You've heard cortex's quirky song stylings, before, but
now it looks like he's getting some competition from a fellow admin. (
Relevant Google Maps link.) Now all we need is for mathowie and vacapinta to do a duet on "I Am The Very Model Of A Modern Moderator" and we're covered!

There's a bit too much "too much __________________" going on in MetaTalk. Every other day, MetaTalk hosts a thread wherein a user complains that a subject they find uninteresting is being overdone on Metafilter. Such threads are an expression of
individuals' disinterest in a subject, and while there's nothing intrinsically wrong with such disinterest, it's somehow evolved into a continuing reoccurrence within MetaTalk that's just utterly purposeless.

Hoppy birdday, cerebellum! Er, no, got that wrong. Let me try that again! Many happy returns of the day, limbic system! Damn. I know I can get this right. Third try's the charm?
Happy birthday, cortex! There we go!

We last discussed the edit window
last September, after it was tried out in
December '08. I was just curious what the current status of the feature was ... has any definite decision been made one way or the other whether it'll be rolled out, and if so, has a date been set?

Idea: the Metafilter link-checker. Take the part of the 'new post' process that double-checks against prior posts, add the part of Mefi that conjures up the related posts, put a link to the feature up on the two lines of links near the logo.

Just wanted to highlight
Lore Sjöberg's Mathowie-ing of Weird Al Yankovic's "Charles Nelson Reilly", which then inspired wendell's
rewrite of the lyrics. Both fairly amusing and almost lost in the shuffle, I think.

I am wondering if people could assist me in locating Ask Metafilter questions along the lines of
this and
this. I know it's a concept frequently asked about, but evidently the concept's too amorphous for tags to be of help, Related Questions just circularly refer to each other, and I can't find the right Google-
fu for this one.

Ask.Metafilter is over 5 years old now, with volumes of suggestions and helpful ideas.
philosophistry sorted through the years of posts categorized as
Human Relations and
Work & Money, and created ranked listings of the books people recommended the most often:
Human Relations,
Work & Money. Note that each little thumbs-up icon is a link back to the post which referred to the book in question.

This idea has been sticking around in my head for a while: assuming its creator cortex didn't vehemently object, could
Big Big Question be integrated into Metafilter as a new subsite? I think it could be something amazing.

I remember an Ask Metafilter question in which it was asked whether, if the current Queen of England went by a name based on her forename and surname (the format many of us go by, such as "John Smith" or "Jane Doe"), what that name would be. I can't seem to find it under the "queen" tag or via a Google search.

PonyFilter: Keyboard navigation for comments, similar to what's demonstrated
here, except the pagination hack wouldn't be necessary (unless you wanted it to go to the next thread instead of the next page). 'j' would go one comment down the page and 'k' would go one comment up the page. It'd be a real nice addition!

Just out of curiousity, tomorrow, there's going to be about five million, four hundred thousand, six hundred fifty-two attempts to write a "first black President" FPP. Do the mods have any specific plans, or is it going to be whomever jumps the gun first? And are you guys going to be able to enjoy the festivities, or are you going to be too busy deleting everyone's massively respawning dupes? ;-)

One of the most discouraging trends I see in Metafilter as a whole is this
very widespread tendency for
Mefites to focus to a fetishistic degree on bureaucratic policing rather than content. I don't think the tendency makes someone a bad person, nor do I claim I've been immune to it. But it's a variation of ...

You know, there's been
fiction about
Mefi post-apocalypse. But if you look at
this thread and at the

While
this guy does need the "slap in the face" back-to-reality technique he's getting, he doesn't need it to the extent he's getting, and the extent of name-calling is more likely to make him re-entrench in his behaviors than it is to assist in the change of attitude he's seeking.
This comment is particularly unhelpful.

A few months shy of three years later, I'm still knocked breathless by
this thread. I've been rereading each story over this weekend, and it's really had me thinking about echoes and effects, human goodness, and the astonishing strength of human resilience. I'm really grateful to everyone who shared such meaningful and vulnerable moments of their lives. Mefi is one hell of a community.
