"He makes Gozer look like little Mary Sunshine."
Oh my god did I love that cartoon...and for its realism no less. I was devastated when it was revamped for a younger audience. All of a sudden it was full of softer lines, inane plots, more goofiness, and an idiotic ghost. What a tragedy.

Farm life in 1910
Our old neighbor growing up was missing an eye and three fingers from playing with blasting caps as a child. So needless to say, I steered clear of them and favored, instead, glass baby food jars packed with black powder and a waterproof fuse. I don't think it's fishing though if you throw them off of the top of a train trestle into the river.

Rethinking Literacy
Being somewhat familiar with the entire spectrum of language and cultural literacy arguments, I think the more moderate perspective of "the dark side of literacy" is that in certain periods of time and in certain cultures, literacy education has operated somewhat like a re-education camp for colonial powers in a way that destroys pre-existing cultures and languages (sometimes purposefully so). This still does not speak as to whether those being "educated" are better or worse... [more]

10th July 2003
Well, now it's settled in my mind, my garden pond will be a foot thick epoxy concrete, generously laced with rebar, with a couple of metal fence posts driven down a few meters as pilings. I think I'll weld the rebar while I'm at it.
This reminds me of a story my father told me of an acquaintance of his who was an often drunk college dean. This dean had, once before, hit and destroyed his neighbor's mailbox coming home from a party. The neighbor, an... [more]

Hierarchy of Disagreement
Ad Hominem (literally translated meaning "to the man") forgoes the logos (or logic) of the argument and addresses the ethos (or character) of the arguer. It's only a logical fallacy in the most rigid sense of the and one is ususally only accused of it in extreme or unwarranted uses. Rhetorically speaking though, it is an often evoked and often effective maneuver of persuasive reasoning. An example might be, "Why... [more]

Learnding
but how juvenile is it
Juvenile in that it is an overt learning tool with questions that correspond to specific educational outcomes (looks like something around 6-7th grade). What I find surprising is that it is also charming and interesting.
I got a few questions wrong

Lawmakers consider outlawing 'next marijuana'
Since we are all waxing eloquently about our salvia experiences...I will say that it is definitely not an "abusable" drug in the traditional sense, but that doesn't express the only way that it threatens our fair republic. As for it's abusibility, I would rather smoke a pack of Marlboro Reds than do salvia twice in a day. I do remember experimenting with it for a few months about eight years ago, though. I had wanted to find some DMT, but didn't seem to have the right friends.... [more]

No dearth of mirth today
I think the silliest notion is the the one that there is some powerful rationality that propels or should propel any sort of advancement in "civilization." Clearly, we can only manage that for 2,500 years maximum at a time or so before things go bonkers and we're back to eating crap and beating each other with pointy sticks.

Hitting something the size of a human torso less than 15 feet away with a 9mm semi-auto is very, very easy - even one handed. At 25-plus feet it requires a practiced aim to do so consistently. To do so with any regularity at 75 feet requires a good weapon with which you are familar through consistent practice.
Though a .22 caliber pistol cartridge is not really an effective round for dropping someone on the spot it is still deadly, particularly in the hands of an... [more]
