My wife and I are (probably) moving into a newly-built apartment in a month or so. Here in Korea, brand new units tend to reek for a while of chemicals from glue and particle board and so on. Help us minimize the chemical haze!

I have an ancient Thinkpad 570, and the hard drive finally died. Hardware not recognized. I've pulled out the old one (it rattles ominously) and am wondering if I can replace it with a new generic laptop drive, rather than having to go with overpriced proprietary stuff.

An Interactive Space Simulator
"Smash planets together, introduce rogue stars, and build new worlds from spinning discs of debris. Fire a moon into a planet or destroy everything you've created with a super massive black hole. You can simulate and interact with our solar system: the 8 planets,160+ moons, and hundereds of asteroids, the nearest 1000 stars to our Sun, and our local group of galaxies."

Viewzi is a kind of metasearch tool
built around 'views'. It's kind of the antiGoogle in that it's not so much for quick answers as for idle looking around, and it's all about the UI, but it's interesting and pretty and kind of fun. Beta, naturally, and fully buzzword compliant.
Flash haters will probably hate it. Usability people may have an aneurism. That's OK. [

In a large and steadily-growing community, and possibly because I'm getting old and stuff, I find myself having trouble sometimes remembering who said what, especially when it's a newer user. So, a possibly small and easy-to-implement feature request.

So Matt said "Full text search is in the works right now, and will be rolled out soon." Yayhooray! This is the part where I annoy him and pb and make their lives more difficult by asking everybody about their dream search features (and slip in a request or seven of my own).

So Hunter S Thompson's dead and I don't really know which writers to turn to, as the American election year gets underway, who can bring the mad skills, the savage wit, and the dedication to cutting through the usual bullshit. Wanna-be gonzo schtick I'm not so excited by; clear, fearless, honest voices for the win!
Drug references optional.

Team Fortress 2: MeFight Club
What could be more fun than blowing up your fellow MeFites with rockets and sticky bombs, or literally knifing them in the back? Nothing, I say!
A bunch of us have been playing Team Fortress 2, and I thought a wee forum where we can talk about the game (other than in-game on our server) and plot the eventual domination of Clan [MeFi] would be a Good Thing. So here it is -- if you're into the game or just thinking about picking it up, come join us. All are welcome!

In America, you have to be born there to be President. Is there a similar law in Canada? Do you have to be Canadian-born to ever be Prime Minister, or just a citizen?

Trigger Happier
"Trigger Happy is a book about the aesthetics of videogames — what they share with cinema, the history of painting, or literature; and what makes them different, in terms of form, psychology and semiotics. It’s offered under a CC license, for a limited time only. I’m not sure how limited that time will be, so grab it while it’s hot."

How is
favoriting every single comment (
in several
different threads) different from any other kind of crapflood? It dilutes what (arguably little) utility the favorites have for anyone else, and annoys me because I haven't had coffee yet.

Could we get a <pre> tag or something so that example code posted inline doesn't get stripped (or is there something that already works)? I ask because of
this.

The author of this site
takes screen-shots from long-pan scenes of classic animation and puts them together to re-create the original larger background images. Much cooler than it sounds, honest.

Bruce Sterling's
talk at SXSW is described on the landing page as a 'rant'. It isn't. What it
is is a survey from 10,000 feet at what's happening in culture and technology and on the web, and I reckon it's worth spending the hour of your life it'll take to listen to it. I hope you agree.

Metafilter is really,
really fucking good lately. 'Lately' being weeks if not months on end. My theory is that favouriting encourages people Be Swell. Whatever it is, though, I offer a sincere thank you to everyone concerned, because this place is still the best damn game in town.
