MeFi post: Oriental Angel
I've lived all over the world, and I've never been anywhere where there weren't people who were racist.

I suspect that the only thing that varies is the proportion of racists that feel comfortable voicing their prejudices. Whether the number of racists as a proportion of a populace at large in a given country varies, I am still uncertain.

I say this not to defend the barefaced racism in NEAsia, where I've lived... [more]

MeFi post: Dollhouse Demolished
I started out very much disliking the show, started to like it quite a lot, but then less so again lately.

So it's a wash, for me at least.

I called it a skill of the newer generation, a type of self marketing. This is all an extension of The Pursuit Of Cute.

I had a related bunch of thoughts a couple of years back, too.

MeFi post: "It will cost you a piece of yourself."
I'm a hell of a lot more offended by the developers disallowing dedicated servers and otherwise locking down and consolizing the game, pooping all over us proud, doomed PC-gamers, than I am by the latest handwringing over ingame violence.

To them I say: suck it, Infinity Ward! I'll still play the game, though, probably. Sigh.

MeFi post: Pants Pankuro: Toilet training in Japan
My personal paean in two parts to a number of things Japanese, including the glorious toilet technology, from a few years back.

Bumwash Gadgetry has since appeared all over Korea as well (even the toilets at my office, for goodness sakes), and it is bitterweet that I will never recapture the sphinctery bliss of that first encounter. [NOT... [more]

MeFi post: How to make a Jellystinian
It's almost satanic. Why would any rational being want to watch this?

I love Safran's stuff (even while I find him irritating), and I totally knew that if his latest series showed up here, there'd be some Americans getting their underpants in knots. No surprises here! Hail satan!

MeFi post: The Warning
Echoing Mitheral, I grow increasingly weary of the 'only the prescient and plugged-in could have seen it coming'. Fuck that noise. Anybody with two goddamned brain cells to rub together saw it coming. Myself included, and I've been down to my last brain cell for years.

That kind of bullshit just abdicates personal responsibility in favour of granting it to authority figures and technocrats and manipulative media figures, and ramps up the feedback spiral of willful... [more]

MeFi post: 10 years on, The Cluetrain Manifesto
Chris Locke's a friend of mine and a very smart man and a splendid writer.

The Cluetrain thing is and was an artifact of its time, and at the rate things change on the net, 10 years ago is an eternity. It really did feel like the world was changing in some interesting ways back then with its weblogs and its reinventing-of-business and its new rules and long tail and eyeball economy and all the rest of the idiotic tosh that made millionaires of the quick-off-the-mark.... For the last 10 years or so, the preferred and government-mandated (Ministry of Culture and Tourism proclamation No. 2000-8) romanization for the 'ㅡ' character in '글' is 'eu'.

Sloppy romanization of hangeul and/or fallback to the McCune–Reischauer system used during the last few decades of the 20th century are one of the several thousand things that make me cranky.

I think one of my Traumatic Childhood Experiences™ must have happened in some kind of conjunction with Where The Wild Things Are. I have this very weird mix of nostalgic love and longing combined with a kind of visceral revulsion every time I think of the book or see its cover.

I should give up on television. I don't know if there's anything there. It's a dead medium.

The past 8 years or so have seen better television, if you know where to look, and more of it, than at any other time since the medium was created.

That period has also seen worse television, without having to look, and more of it, than at any other time since the medium was created.

But, like fff, I almost... [more]

MeFi post: Petabytes on a budget
I started off thinking this was a bit on the pepsi-blue side of things, but it was an interesting and well-put-together article on how to do this kind of monster-storage thing.

What I couldn't help but thinking as I read it, though, was how quaint this will look -- like those torso-sized 1Mb drives of a few of decades ago -- in a decade or so.

And from there, to wondering what kind of data we'll be storing when we've got petabyte-storage earrings... [more]

Doing this kind of thing (for very small values of 'this kind of thing') with stone knives and bearskins -- a TRS-80 Model III with a monochrome 127x47 resolution monitor and 16K RAM -- was how I taught myself both math and how to write code, when I was like 13.

I wish we'd had today's technology when I was young, but then again, if we did, I'd probably have been wasting time posting comments to community weblogs rather than exploring mathematics.... [more]
