I'd just like to say that, although I've only asked 13 questions total to AskMe (less than one a month on average), I got hit last week with the once-a-week rule. And it hurt. I'd like Matt to reconsider my previous suggestion to make the limit four-a-month instead of one-a-week.

I guess Goatse.cx is high treason, but bitter snarks are not. Oh well.

He had me up until that. Until he can understand why, in the grown up world where people have jobs and mortgages, goatse isn't harmless fun, he shouldn't be here.

let him spend $5 on a new membership

That's no solution. If matt isn't banning people by ip (which I believe he is), he should be.

As a person in the grown-up world with mortgages, a job, employees, kids and pets ks’s act was wrong but jp’s comment was falling down roll on the floor funny.

What are you talking about? goatse could get me fired in an instant. I have bills to pay. goatse is super bad.

This is the worst callout ever. The arrogance of people who a) think they can see the future and b) try to censor what passes for transgression in their mind before it even occurs is appalling.

Did rushmc just call someone arrogant?

a) You've been around here long enough to know what fat threads are almost invariably like. It's not "seeing the future", it's anticipating behavior based on past experience, and we do it... [more]

It's like this:

You know how (in, say, Outlook) you can organize your email into little folders? I want to put all my mail mefi-related email into a folder called "Mefi", for example. I can do that with Outlook. Your request, xammerboy, is like asking everyone you know "whenever you send me email, please have it jump into my 'Mefi' folder, k thx by". Tabs happen on your end. Matt can't do anything about it.

Is that clear? Or... [more]

Yeah, and Matt, please post on the preferences page that Mefi is not a first-person shooter or a bittorrent client. And all the other things you can't do with the site.

If you seriously hate people because they criticised you on a web site, you've got some hardcore issues m'friend.

If there were a feature allowing one to delete their own threads, I would have done this the minute I saw this had been discussed before.

Honestly, xammerboy, the problem isn't the thread itself, but the fact that, after people had already shown you the answer, you continued to be all indignant: "Did anyone read the question?" when, apparently, you hadn't read the answer. The question itself is reasonable if you don't understand the... [more]

The first thing I would do is upgrade to 1.0. Even if the buttons don't work for all users with .8, (or even anything <1.0) it wouldn't make sense for Matt to make a change to fix pre-release version of a browser, especially when the release version is available. (Which isn't a snark. I don't want to make another "hate" list.)

Mudpuppie, that's not a personal attack. I understand that it's harsh, and if I had spent a lot of time on something, only to have mr_crash_davis call it names, I'd be offended too. (Actually, I wouldn't, but I can understand why you would.) But it's not a "personal" attack. It's an attack on some words you wrote on a web page. A personal attack is when I... [more]

And Seth is wrong (because he overstates his case).

Seth is right. He just overstates his case. Just because Seth has been wrong many, many times in the past (too many to count, really. I mean, whew! Like, he's usually *wicked* wrong! How much "wrong" can one man carry? Just ask Seth.) doesn't mean he's always wrong. (Seth, I kid.) "Don't like it, ignore it" is horrible advice. Seth is dead-on with that.

Sorry, but it sucks that matt finally comments on the boyzone question and this is his answer.

Why does Matt have to comment on anything? This is why a self-governing community is better than a monarchy. Matt can't be everything to everyone. Stop looking to him for every answer.

self appointed sanctimonious MeFi gods/censors

y'know, that line's been tossed around so much that people take it at face value. The fact is, they/we aren't "self-appointed". Matt designed this community to be self-policing. That was his vision for it. That doesn't mean he approves of all the snarking or piling on the newcomers. And if he doesn't like it, he's free to call out/suspend/ban anyone he thinks is consistently... [more]

It's also considered -- what? polite? good form? correct? -- to link and tip the hat to the site from which you appropriated your FPP link: [A&L Daily] [The Morning News] [Fark], etc.

That practice is kinda deprecated these days, no? IMO, a tip of the hat is polite if you cribbed the link from your average shmuck blogger. That way s/he can get some traffic. But there's no need to credit larger sites like Fark.

This isn't about "there goes the neighborhood."

Well, before it was closed for a long time, membership was just like that -- people could happen by and sign up.

This is true, but the site didn't have the visibility it has today.

I wonder how much of the reservations about newbies aren't based in the fear of being supplanted.

I don't know. Nothing is going to keep quonsar from being quonsar. There is a fear, though, that the character of this community--which is something else we've all worked to develop over several years--could go away. The site may have its flaws, but at least it's not livejournal.

Is this how the conservatives feel about teh gheys?

You'd be surprised how many people don't understand the principle that something given accidentally to you is not automatically yours to keep.

You'd be surprised at how many people can't find Rhode Island on a map. "Where is Rhode Island?" is a bad question.

And btw, of all the crap-ass questions that make it to AskMe, you pick that one?

Don't waste Matt's time with a feature request when you can already do it.

I think the point is that Miguel wants to know this information about other people. One can't expect everyone to spontaneously put that info on their page. A new field would encourage people to do so.
