How to say "I'm praying for you" when, well, I'm not.
I think this is a feature and not a bug of atheism/agnosticism. I sometimes feel like people tell others that they will be "in my prayers" and then they never think another thought (much less say a prayer) about that person's problem. Now of course that is not true in all cases, but it does seem to be true pretty often.

When you do not have that "default" response about prayer, it forces you to actually think about the person's grief or hardship or… [more]

Check out my voodoo mask!
I refuse to believe that those things are anything but a Jim Henson creation. Like something right out of The Dark Crystal.

I kind of wish I were a member of a species that performed mating dances.

Obviously, you do not hang out at the cloughb.

Susan Lucci's Soap Bubble Pops
I'm another dude who was into a soap at one point. I haven't commented yet because my "story" was Days of our Lives. My high school girlfriend (and now wife) was into DOOL due to her grandfather's obsession with the show (and his slightly unhealthy crush on Marlena) and my Freshman dorm in college also had the lounge TV turned to the show every afternoon. I enjoyed it quite a bit, but the glacial pace of the plot made it pretty hard for me to… [more]

Youse? Yinz? Nope, Y'all are going to have to stick with y'all.

So, we could just give all our "awesome" to David Tennant.

Nah, he's already got plenty.

Or it shows up, but only on their computer. You could call it My Own Private MetaFilter.

I bet they both disabled the accounts so they can merge, like Station in Bill and Ted 2, and then he'll come back as a really EXTRA-knowledgeable weightlifter to and post comments with even more studies about the benefits of deadlifts.

Hello! I'm here early. I'm kind of hard to miss as I'm wearing a MeFi t-shirt!

We did have fun! That was neat. Great to meet everyone, and we'll have to do it again real soon.

came with friend, realized didn't know who we were supposed to meet with, eyed a few groups of potentials, played ping pong, had really fun with ping pong, left, bought tennis rackets and balls, played tennis in the rain Oh no! I was wearing my MeFi t-shirt and everything. I guess I must have been obscured when you came by. Next time just ask people, "Are you from the Internet?"

Whose dog is this?
Before getting Animal Control involved, I would try and take the dog to the nearest vet and ask them tho scan the dog (all vets these days have handheld chip scanners). You can also ask to put a "Found" sign up on their bulletin board and make sure the front desk people have a description of the dog and your contact info, as people will often call local vets to try and find their lost pets.

Know of an artist named Art Seller? I do now.
Great art is always enhanced by a great story. Very cool.

Wow, I wasn't expecting to be blown away when I clicked on "The Boat" link. I can see why it stayed with you all these years because it's hauntingly beautiful.

Agree completely. If there is a place to buy reasonably priced reproductions of Mr. Sellers' work, I'd love to be pointed towards it.

However when I told this to my father years ago, he went into his closet and pulled out two paintings of Motif #1 that I had created when I was 12. I have no recollection of having done these.

Ha! A classic "Dad" move. Looking forward to seeing more of his work.

Vacation: 0 -- Budget Riders: 1
No. Unless you are heading to a National Park, there will be no impact on you. My understanding is that TSA employees will still be working, so your airport experience will be the carefree, pleasant lark it always is.

Walk.
Some of those are a bit disturbing, but more of them seem to just be big kids taking advantage of a vacant seat. As a parent, I'm going to be pushing the stroller even if my two year old demands to walk (as my daughter often did), so if the other kid wants to cram themselves in there for a ride, why the eff not? The one of the girl reading (oldskool Nancy Drew, unless I miss my guess) in the double stroller is kind of adorable, actually

Motif No. 1
As an Art History major from New England, I certainly knew of Motif No. 1. It's a bit surprising there are so many that are not familiar with it.

Also, apparently no one outside America ever exaggerates anything for effect, ever. Good to know.

Let's have some fun! Interview questions for prospective interns!
Where were you and what were you doing when the 9/11 terrorist attacks happened? (Listen for the amount of detail they offer and how impactful the news was for them when they first heard it.)

I know it is depressing to think about, but if you are hiring 18 year old interns, they were 8 on 9/11. They were probably at recess in 3rd Grade.

I like to ask people "What is the worst thing about your last job/your school/your… [more]

I don't know about piracy, but I do know that loading all of my games onto a hard drive and running them through USB Loader GX instead of swapping disks around is pretty sweet. There are no homebrew apps that are Wii-exclusive must-haves, as far as I know.

Growing up on screen
Great question. I could easily argue the opposite, though. That the ubiquity and casual ease of photos and video today might make them have less impact than they did in the past. Seeing a photo or video of yourself in the "film era" was a fairly rare event -- my wife, for example, only knows of three extant photos of her father, who died in 1981. Today, one sees one's own face staring back at one all the time, so it makes it less talismanic, less fraught with meaning.… [more]

It's raining bytes
A cloud service, I think, will be less appealing when you'll be able to do so much from home.

The appeal, for me anyway, is that it can serve as a "free" remote backup of my files as well. As it stands, 20GB is a little too small for my purposes, but if were to get bumped up to 40 or 50 geebees I'd be all over it.

There's a guy who plays occasionally at my local brewpub and does an acoustic guitar version of Who Am I? (What's My Name?) by Snoop Dogg. Always gets a huge response and something about the laid back vibe of the song kind of lends itself to one man acoustic guitar.

City rules governing advertising bicycles attached to cycle racks?
I know in my home state (Massachusetts) there is a special "commercial" license plate one must get for a car that has any kind of company name or advertising on it (my stepfather once got a ticket for not having a commercial plate after he bought a pickup truck from his boss that had the company name painted on the door). Perhaps create a "commercial" bicycle permit that 1) is required for any bike that has corporate advertising on it, 2) includes a significant registration… [more]

What is in this stuff?
Absolutely. We have had all three of our cats on C/D for some time now (one of our cats has recurring sterile cystitis and bladder stones, and another one is an orange male with no urinary problems... yet) and all three pretty much thrive on it. When we have occasionally gone off of it he inevitably gets another bout of stones.

Oh dear. I'm so sorry. Assuming you are talking about PU surgery (perineal urethrostomy), it is true that even in the best case scenario it is a hard row to hoe. The life of a cat with serious urinary problems can be a very tough one, so you have spared him that.
