Could you call it an "archaic pronunciation"? That doesn't give you any kind of clue as to the traditional (the descriptivist in me won't let me say "correct") pronunciation, but at least it communicates rather well that it is not normal.
Also, to this American, saying that "the w in Southwark is silent" is just the tip of the pronunciation iceberg, but we won't get into that... posted to Ask MetaFilter by Rock Steadyat 8:27 PM on February 24, 2009
this is sounding more like a witch hunt and kind of despicable to boot.
You are forgetting the fact that HE'S A WITCH. He has plagiarized. Multiple times. Almost word-for-word. As the punchline of his comic strip, adding almost nothing to the stolen content. I'm not sure how much more plagiarizy this guy has to get before people quit telling us to ease up on him. posted to MetaTalk by Rock Steadyat 5:47 AM on February 24, 2009
I don't see anybody here saying he didn't plagiarize.
So then why not fuck with his livelihood? David Bowie and Queen fucked with Vanilla Ice's livelihood when he stole their material. The New York Times fucked with Jayson Blair's livelihood when he stole stories from other reporters. I am sometimes willing to cut a plagiarist some slack when the appropriation seems to be accidental, or when the stolen material is a small part of... We got our dog about three months before the birth of our first son. She immediately incorporated him into her circle of protection.
This is probably the outcome in, I'm going to say, 9 out of 10 cases of new baby+protective dog. If it is not the outcome you are going to get, you will see it immediately (like the situation billysumday mentions, and it will probably mean finding a new home for your pup.
I rarely remember my dreams, but when I do, they are almost never cohesive in any kind of useful or even interesting way. They are usually something like, "I was in my old high school, but it was also somehow a supermarket. Sean Penn from Fast Times at Ridgemont High and I were running from a bunch of vampires, and I was trying to open this door that was locked or stuck or something, until I opened it and then it was the door of my old Saab. I think the vampires were... [more] posted to Ask MetaFilter by Rock Steadyat 11:44 AM on February 23, 2009
Every once in a blue moon, my dreaming self will completely realize that I'm dreaming, but I won't immediately wake up. When this happens, the closest analogue is day-dreaming... I can pretty much imagine whatever I want, but my sense of actually experiencing it is much stronger.
Mmm, yeah, this. I should mention that as a young teen I had awful recurring nightmares about being chased by vampires (hence their appearance in my comment above). I was... [more] posted to Ask MetaFilter by Rock Steadyat 11:51 AM on February 23, 2009
517 is right. I have found that all kinds of placket wrinkling can be minimized (but not eliminated) by washing shirts inside-out with all the buttons done up. Takes a few extra minutes when undressing or loading the washer, but it's worth the savings in ironing time. posted to Ask MetaFilter by Rock Steadyat 4:13 AM on February 23, 2009 marked best answer
I suppose it could be, though I've never heard of a cat that did it for that reason regularly. With a cat of that age, I would be more concerned about some kind of urinary disease. Pay attention to her litterbox habits for the next few days. If she is going in and out of the box frequently, if she cries while urinating, if she tries to urinate but can't, or if she has any other accidents, she should see a vet. posted to Ask MetaFilter by Rock Steadyat 5:35 AM on February 19, 2009
what is the connection between urinary disease and not going in the litterbox?
There are several reasons. First is what kindall said above -- avoidance of the litterbox because of associations with pain. There is also the fact that cats with urinary issues will avoid urination for as long as possible, so that when they eventually REALLY have to go, they may not be able to get to the box. Finally, the urge to urinate seems to come on more abruptly and... [more] posted to Ask MetaFilter by Rock Steadyat 9:22 AM on February 19, 2009
there is also the chance of urinary blockage. think the feline version of kidney stones
This is far less likely to be the case with a female cat. Urinary blockages are almost exclusively seen in male cats (and are seen disproportionately often in male orange cats, for some reason). But for future reference, fancyoats is right -- a urinary obstruction can be fatal within a few days. If your male cat is straining to urinate but little or nothing is... Let's get something straight right off the bat -- spending an inordinate amount of time straightening out health insurance documents is not confined to first/middle name problems. Just try telling them that you cannot receive mail anywhere but a PO Box -- it's like their heads explode. You cannot guarantee that paperwork will be understood correctly.
That said, I agree with the folks that suggest you drop your first name entirely (I hope middlelast.com is available).... [more] posted to Ask MetaFilter by Rock Steadyat 7:37 PM on February 19, 2009
EZ2 got real interesting the last couple of seasons.
Hey, yeah it did. Too soon though? It's going to be tricky for Turkey to get those last few SCs with the rest of the world allied against it. posted to MetaTalk by Rock Steadyat 5:48 PM on February 2, 2009
Maybe we can get a consensus to make the deadline shorter, if that's possible.
Also, does anyone know how to import the results to jDip? I can't seem to import the game from floc.net.
I don't have a problem with a shorter deadline, personally. I'm not sure what the problem is with jDip. ez1 and ez2 work fine. Norm-mefi was having the same problem though. Don't know if they ever resolved it. posted to MetaTalk by Rock Steadyat 7:55 PM on February 2, 2009
It would be great to take some of the post-game discussion to the wiki Diplo page for future reference. EZ1 seems to be approaching endgame as well, so perhaps we should try and set up another new game or two once it ends. I'd love to see one of the variant games set up. There was some discussion about Chaos above... posted to MetaTalk by Rock Steadyat 8:53 AM on February 17, 2009
Is it possible in DP Judge games to declare a joint victory? I seem to remember in the few live games I have played that two or more powers with +18 SCs amongst them could agree to a joint victory, even if there were other active players remaining. posted to MetaTalk by Rock Steadyat 11:52 AM on February 17, 2009
I have had this occasionally, and switching from boxers to briefs temporarily really helps the healing. Also, I don't know what counts as "normal wear and tear" for you, but try to avoid any... stimulation if at all possible. posted to Ask MetaFilter by Rock Steadyat 9:21 AM on February 17, 2009
I know it's an in-joke, but I really like "Beanplate Farms". It has a warm, cozy feel to it that speaks to nourishment and abundance. It also has connotations of tradition (old fashioned Boston Baked Beans) and community (bean dinners). I can envision a nice logo, too -- tendrils of steam rising off a heaping plate of beans. The .com domain appears to be available, too.

This happened to me more than a couple of times with female friends in college, once they realized that there was no chase my long distance relationship (with the woman who is now my wife) was going away. It sucks. You also cannot be sure that this explains the situation, especially if you and she have never had a really close relationship. Given the fact that you must work with the person, it might be worthwhile to just touch base with her and make sure there is no problem brewing between you. posted to Ask MetaFilter by Rock Steadyat 12:04 PM on February 16, 2009
I used to work in an emergency animal hospital and I can think of at least 5 or 6 animals we treated over the last year who jumped or fell from second story windows. AVG had some issues (with Vista in particular) a while back, but they seem to have resolved them. Of course, with the free version you have little recourse to customer support if something does go wrong, but there are numerous decent forums for AVG Free. posted to Ask MetaFilter by Rock Steadyat 11:44 AM on February 14, 2009
blue_beetle, if you have a MetaFilter Cabal-class headjack you can plug your ethernet connection directly into it (the adapter is only like 10 Euro at the MeFi Pro Shop) and it will resolve all the MetaFilter Network data feeds into STMDP (Short-Term Memory Data Protocol). It's a little disorienting remembering threads that you've never read, but if you manually adjust your headjack's Temporal Offset (just telnet into the headjack from any computer on your LAN) you can make it more manageable.... In line with hungrysquirrel's comment -- depending on your level of committment/professionalism and your budget, a white polo, some green fabric paint and a small foam roller brush might do the trick without getting bobbins involved. posted to Ask MetaFilter by Rock Steadyat 8:41 AM on February 12, 2009
The list is by MeFi's Own, by the way. Yeah, it's kind of a mixed bag, but I think he does a pretty good job. I like the inclusion of The Game, frankly. My favorite moment in that movie is when Michael Douglas' character is desperately trying to get help from a friend and Douglas knocks on the friend's door late at night. While he waits for them to answer, a siren is heard in the distance and Douglas instantly spins around, his ears pricking up to hear what fresh hell this... Hey, I just had my wisdom teeth out on Friday! This was my first time under general anesthesia, and it was a great as people suggest. They give you an IV, you blink, and somehow while you were blinking they've had a bit of a dig-around in your mouth.
As far as how you will respond to the anesthesia? Can't say. From what I understand, it is nothing like pain relievers like oxycodone and acetaminophen (the ingredients in a Percocet). For what it is worth, I seem to be... [more] posted to Ask MetaFilter by Rock Steadyat 8:12 PM on February 9, 2009
I think that part of the issue is that the sunlight is different and US clothing tends to look rather brash in the softer Northen European sunlight.
