A modern crib for cheap?
Most cribs suck, aesthetically. There has been some improvement since my daughter was born over 10 years ago, but really only in the high end market. I suggest you buy a crib from IKEA and then a nice bed for the child in a couple of years. Keep in mind, if you have another child, you are not going to want to convert the crib to a bed anyway, and even if you don't, it's always nice to pass a crib along to a sibling, cousin or friend who is expecting once your baby has grown out of it.

How to maintain a long distance relationship . . . with my nephews and niece
Any suggestions on how I can get to know them besides just gifts and cards and skype?

You've got to be patient. At their ages, they are really too young for you to get to know them (and vice versa) without a more regular physical presence, but what the cards and gifts and Skype does is keep you in their mind as "A Person Who Loves Me" as they grow and mature, and then once they are old enough for a more meaningful long-distance relationship… [more]

Help me help my dog
Have you considered medication? There are a range of anti-anxiety meds that can be very effective for dogs, and many of them are not super expensive. See a veterinary behaviorist to look into your options.

She's due for a well-dog checkup, and we'll ask the vet about medication. Should we ask about long term meds like Prozac, or short term meds like Valium? The vet probably won't be able to tell much from examining her, because we have to drug her with acepromazine before vet visits (due to vet anxiety, of course!).

While this is definitely something you want to discuss with your regular vet, I think the best thing to do is to ask them about a referral… [more]

I've got a few hangups.
This...but via text message. Be firm, be concise, but be polite.

Could you even plausibly pretend you don't know who is calling? Send a text saying "I am getting repeated hang-up calls from this number. Please ensure your phone is not dialing me by accident.
" Don't even let on that you know who it is that is doing it, if it is believable that you never had (or no longer have) her number in your phone.

Like driving an iPhone
I was looking for a very similar car recently and decided on the very cool Hyundai Veloster (her name is Clever Girl). It's probably not ideal for a car seat situation (it only has a rear door on the passenger side), but the Elantra and even Accent have similar techy trim packages. My second choice was the Ford Focus.

I was also looking at the Honda Civic, which while possibly the most boring car you can drive, has a pretty cool dual-level spaceshippy display setup.

I started with mattresses and was actually amazed.

I went the other way. Started with otters and was convinced there was no way the mattresses could stack up. I was wrong.

Well played, mattresses.

Oh, that is really good. I'd chip in to get a scarf made out of that.
posted to MetaTalk by Rock Steady at 6:01 AM on March 20, 2012
So, if I'm understanding that right, we are talking $1000 for 3 kilts and a few ties and scarves? Or would the ties and scarves have to be made out of a completely different fabric? If we charged $80/yard that would be $300 per kilt just for fabric, but it would get us over $1000. Is that outside the realm of reasonable to pay for a kilt? I'd pay $40 for a half yard, if we could buy it in that small a quantity.

Perhaps a Kickstarter project, publicized on MetaTalk and… [more]

Well, let's get a MeTa post up about it. I'd say offer it by the half-yard in either of two weights for a sufficient price that the price of the order will be easily covered, and then adjust the price down once we have exact totals. We can prevail upon the mods to put it on the sidebar (and maybe even a top-of-page banner, like is done for the MeFi Mall in the holiday season?). I'll make the post if this sounds like a good way to do it, but I'm happy to defer to someone with more experience in… [more]

What's the best online service for an all iOS household to store and share photos?
Is the lack of computer due to cost or simplicity? If the latter, then why not get an extra 64GB iPad to serve as "The Photo iPad". Locate it centrally in a dock, and you can upload photos to it with a Camera Connector Kit or save them from the Photo Stream if they are taken with iOS devices. Personally, I would be scared to have all my photos on one device, but if you keep the most important ones copied onto other devices or uploaded to Dropbox or Flickr or similar, that would be… [more]

How does one 24 yr old fresh out of college make money while traveling? Starting in New York. Teaching English?
I keep getting told this is the best chance I have to travel at this point in my life before I get tied down.

That's not necessarily true. My mother had me when she was right out of college working as an English teacher. She never got the chance to travel when she was young. She made a career change later in life, and after my brother and I were grown and on our own, she took jobs with her multinational employer that had her living in Buenos Aires,… [more]

Manager promised what she couldn't deliver
Look, I know that it is hard to lose a job opportunity you were counting on, but from here it does not appear that you were "screwed over", but that you made a mistake in trusting that your manager was correct about the information and advice they were giving you. She may have been "shifty" because she felt somewhat guilty about inadvertently leading you astray. I think that making a fuss will only serve to put yourself in a bad light, so take it as a learning experience and… [more]

Best of the Web (except cnn.com?)
Since when is obscurity a requirement for posting?

It's not, but ubiquity definitely counts on the negative side of the tally (as does outragefilter and single-linkiness -- for better or worse), and so taz pushed it over the edge. The community responded that it wasn't as ubiquitous as she originally thought, which appears to have been enough to pull it back.

What are examples of cities created by conglomeration?
Boston annexed several surrounding towns in the 1870s, but was halted by Brookline resisting annexation. If Brookline had submitted, perhaps other towns would have followed suit, resulting in a much larger "Boston Proper" than we have today?

Does Pizza Hut still suck? There's one a few blocks away from our house, and in two years we've never been there.

It's passable, I guess. The sauce is too sweet and the dough is too bready, but it's not bad. The thing is, it's pizza, so unless you live somewhere really isolated, with a little effort you can find a much better local pizzeria to patronize.
