foolproof skillet pizza recipe
2. Naanza - This is really just pizza toppings on top of a piece of naan bread.

This is super great, and among my favorite ways to make pizza.

Give me apps for AP.
For nearly all intents and purposes, the iPad is a hand-held computer. There are very few things that the average user would want to do on a desktop or laptop computer that cannot be done on an iPad, with the exception of viewing Flash on the Internet and running specific pieces of software (meaning, you cannot run Microsoft Word on an iPad, but there are several word processing apps available if you want to write something). Just ask her what she would do with a hand-held computer.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off at Wrigley Field
Seems to put the "Is the Ferris Bueller timeline possible?" question to rest. The Sears Tower and art museum visits occur before lunch, though, if I remember correctly. Even so, less than two hours for the parade and swimming at Sloane's seems a stretch.

Hello IT, have you tried turning off and on again?
What about this? It doesn't have the built-in delay, but it's less than $10 and you can stomp on it.

Everyone likes ponies!
Aesthetic suggestion? Maybe the box should be left-aligned with the comments, not with the "Older" arrows? They seem to have the same left alignment here in MeTa, but in MeFi the "Older" arrows (and the New Comments box) are significantly to the left of the comments. This is in up-to-date Firefox, on Windows 7.

This Firefox 4 extension may be of interest. Haven't tried it out myself, but it seems like it might be a nice solution for people who are concerned about the new comment numbers taking up too much space in the page title.

I've also had items favorited a lot that were pretty insubstantial compared to others that I thought were pretty great.

Where should we live within driving distance of NJ?
I cam in to suggest the Raleigh, NC area as well. Not super walkable, but if you locate yourself in the right neighborhoods it is possible, and even if you don't, getting around the Triangle by car is pretty painless (though I'm comparing it to Boston, where I grew up, so take that with a grain of salt). It's on the border of your allowable Jersey commute as well, but just a fantastic place to live. My only regret about moving here from New England is that we didn't do it sooner.

I hate asking anyone for help.
However, now I'm getting pretty desperate in my job search and I've wondered if I should ask him for help in making connections or networking.

This is what networking is. Asking people you know to put you in touch with people they know. Absolutely do it. You are being foolish if you don't.

Escaping from BART? (Or, oh crap, I have to go back to Oakland now?)
It's not strictly an answer to the question, but I'd feel remiss if I did not mention that this very situation is the premise for the classic Boston folk song, "Charlie on the MTA". Seems old Charlie had enough fare to get on the train, but not enough to get off. His wife brings him a sack lunch every day that he grabs through the window as his train passes the station. He will "ride forever 'neath the streets of Boston, he's the man who never returned."

Aren't I worth what my sisters are worth?
I actually sent him my budget (which was neatly laid out in excel, with the most strict, bare bones expenses only (no replacement clothing, frugal use of soap) so he's not ignorant to my actual needs.

I just want to make it clear here, but showing him that there is a $1000 gap in your budget is not the same as asking him for $1000. This gets to the Ask Culture vs. Guess Culture divide that, frankly, should earn tangerine a Nobel Peace Prize one day.… [more]

An Apple Store with Exposed Brick?
In addition to Burlington, Vermont (already mentioned), there are a number of smaller towns in Vermont that I think are great examples of what you are looking for. Montpelier, Middlebury, Brattleboro, and even smaller towns like Vergennes, Randolph, and White River Junction. Even the sprawl capital of the state, Williston, is attempting to create a downtown from scratch. The state has a great Downtown Development Program (which I used to work for) and on the whole, is very committed to keeping… [more]

What books will be an axe to the frozen sea inside me?
I am fairly confident you will enjoy the Monster Blood Tattoo trilogy (now also known as The Foundling's Tale trilogy). Young Adult, very creative, tons of fascinating worldbuilding, unique characters. Some of the "surprises" and "lessons" of the stories are a bit obvious and cliched, but in the way of a fable or fairy tale. I would be shocked to find there is someone who enjoyed Octavian Nothing and did not like Monster Blood Tattoo.

Can you recommend any unknown gems for a romantic getaway outside of London by car (2-3 hours drive)?
Well, I have rented from the Landmark Trust. Specifically Swarkestone Pavilion, in Derbyshire. Incredibly romantic, and the canals and little towns nearby are perfectly nice for a little wander. In particular, there's a lovely intimate restaurant called Mileburne (like, 4 tables intimate) just down the road that would be perfect for a romantic meal.

it's not the length of the post, it's the distance from the event. live blogging style threads will always have reporting before the facts are known - the balloon boy thread comes to mind...

In the 100,000th post thread, someone linked to the posts at the previous 10K milestones, and I noticed that post 10,000 was made on September 10, 2001. That put me in mind of the 9/11 thread and I went to have a look at it. It's got a bunch of that kind of… [more]

I hadn't run across him before because my head is so far up Red Sox...Nation.

Hmm. It appears -- based on his Wikipedia page -- that he scored the winning run for the Rays against the Sox in the 2008 ALCS, so, swings and roundabouts, I guess. Glad I won't have to root against him now that he is no longer in the AL East.

Title, registration, proof of insurance and license, please
Will the car have plates at all? Do you have time to get temporary plates before Saturday?

This is the biggest question. If it at least has plates that look valid (meaning they have a within-date sticker on them, or whatever is appropriate for that state) then you can probably get by. Even if the registration is not actually valid, as long as it looks OK, the chance that law enforcement will run the plate is pretty minimal, and it will not look out… [more]

I should add, if you are buying it at some kind of dealership or something, they will probably be able to give you temporary plates when you pick it up. If you are buying it from a friend or Craigslist type situation, it may be an issue.

I find that by downloading the entire site every evening, translating the data into a series of numeric matrices, having those matrices converted into a musical notation of my own devising, having that music arranged for SATB choir (with piano and strings on the weekends), and then having that choral work performed for me each night while I sit by the fire with my loving bride, a brace of hunting dogs, and a good Scotch Whisky doesn't exactly enable me to follow MetaFilter, as such, but it's… [more]

Former manager here. Your request is perfectly reasonable, and if your current manager does not see it as such, they are not a reasonable person. If they give you grief about it, I would tell them that Thursday is your last day. As Admiral Haddock mentions, they would not give you two weeks notice if they needed to lay you off.
