Figuring out the coldness
This happened to me more than a couple of times with female friends in college, once they realized that there was no chase my long distance relationship (with the woman who is now my wife) was going away. It sucks. You also cannot be sure that this explains the situation, especially if you and she have never had a really close relationship. Given the fact that you must work with the person, it might be worthwhile to just touch base with her and make sure there is no problem brewing between you.

Can dogs fall out of windows?
I used to work in an emergency animal hospital and I can think of at least 5 or 6 animals we treated over the last year who jumped or fell from second story windows. Here's a product that might help, depending on the teeniness of your chichi.

Help Me Protect My PC Please?
AVG had some issues (with Vista in particular) a while back, but they seem to have resolved them. Of course, with the free version you have little recourse to customer support if something does go wrong, but there are numerous decent forums for AVG Free.

FYI
blue_beetle, if you have a MetaFilter Cabal-class headjack you can plug your ethernet connection directly into it (the adapter is only like 10 Euro at the MeFi Pro Shop) and it will resolve all the MetaFilter Network data feeds into STMDP (Short-Term Memory Data Protocol). It's a little disorienting remembering threads that you've never read, but if you manually adjust your headjack's Temporal Offset (just telnet into the headjack from any computer on your LAN) you can make it more manageable.... Actually, blue_beetle, the Timeshare is kind of a dump. I think some of the smaller cabins on MeFisland still have offseason availability next year, though.

Joanna has flair, needs shirt
In line with hungrysquirrel's comment -- depending on your level of committment/professionalism and your budget, a white polo, some green fabric paint and a small foam roller brush might do the trick without getting bobbins involved.

Mindf**k Movies
The list is by MeFi's Own, by the way. Yeah, it's kind of a mixed bag, but I think he does a pretty good job. I like the inclusion of The Game, frankly. My favorite moment in that movie is when Michael Douglas' character is desperately trying to get help from a friend and Douglas knocks on the friend's door late at night. While he waits for them to answer, a siren is heard in the distance and Douglas instantly spins around, his ears pricking up to hear what fresh hell this... [more]

Based on the "tators" spelling, I prefer to pronounce the word "ta-TORS". It makes this whole thread even funnier.

Why is there a metafilter policy against pretending to be a girl dying of cancer?
Why is there a metafilter policy against unpublishing sex columnists?
Why is there a metafilter policy against shady charities?
Why is there a metafilter policy against injecting SQL exploits?

More like I need widsom insertion, amirite?
Hey, I just had my wisdom teeth out on Friday! This was my first time under general anesthesia, and it was a great as people suggest. They give you an IV, you blink, and somehow while you were blinking they've had a bit of a dig-around in your mouth.

As far as how you will respond to the anesthesia? Can't say. From what I understand, it is nothing like pain relievers like oxycodone and acetaminophen (the ingredients in a Percocet). For what it is worth, I seem to be... [more]

I have a big butt and I cannot lie.
I think that part of the issue is that the sunlight is different and US clothing tends to look rather brash in the softer Northen European sunlight.

My wife is plus-sized, and when we went to Milan recently there was just nothing there for her in terms of clothes. Could she have found something that fit in one of the chains boudicca mentions? Maybe, but struggling to fit into unfamiliar-sized clothes is not her idea of a... [more]

"Was the post on Ask Metafilter about ME???"
It's always fun to see new folks get introduced to fr0zen and xteraco. I'm not sure if anyone specifically pointed out the MeTa thread about their AskMe, and since it's so long, I just wanted to highlight languagehat's The Ballad of fr0zen and xteraco. I don't think cortex ever ended up putting it to music like he threatened to, unfortunately, but it is still genius.

Brilliant but cancelled?
I say it every time this kind of question comes up, but PLEASE SOMEONE watch Now and Again. It premiered around the same time as Once and Again, and the name confusion didn't help, I guess. It is a fairly complete one season drama about a guy whose brain is put into the body of a secret government supersoldier. Most of the plot involves his attempts to contact his wife and teenage daughter, who believe him to be dead. It stars an excellent Dennis... [more]

What solid, unusual podcasts deserve more exposure?
Heh. I came in here first and foremost to mention Jordan, Jessie, Go! but I guess you know about that one. The History of Rome is a very well-done podcast about, well, the history of ancient Rome. Each episode is just fifteen minutes, but is super informative and quite entertaining. When he -- with a straight face -- related Roman battle tactics against Carthaginian war elephants to the Rebel Alliance's approach to Imperial Walkers during the Battle of... [more]

What's that quote about wage inequity?
It's not the specific quote you are looking for, but I couldn't resist posting the lyrics to "The Worker's Song" by the Dropkick Murphys. It really speaks to the spirit of what you are looking for:

By hand and by brain, to earn your pay
Who for centuries long past for no more than your bread
Have bled for your countries and counted your

Maybe we can get a consensus to make the deadline shorter, if that's possible.

Also, does anyone know how to import the results to jDip? I can't seem to import the game from floc.net.

I don't have a problem with a shorter deadline, personally. I'm not sure what the problem is with jDip. ez1 and ez2 work fine. Norm-mefi was having the same problem though. Don't know if they ever resolved it.

What do I root for in this Superbowl bet?
While two-point conversions, missed PATs and safeties are indeed valid ways to score in the NFL they are exceedingly rare, especially in the Super Bowl, when teams are playing conservatively. There have only been 5 safeties in SB history, f'rinstance (though the Steelers have two of them).

The scoring in the game will come in increments of 7 and 3, which does not bode very well for your squares, but I think the 8/3 and the 6/1 are promising.

I ask all MeFites to assume that any fabulous comments they may read in the archives were probably originally posted by me. Where should I get my tattoo?
My brain says that this might not always be appropriate working in an office setting even though I'm IT. Should I get them someplace else?

It's a great idea for a tat, but if you are already questioning the propriety of it, I've got to suggest somewhere cover-up-able. Shoulder blade or bikini line are the ideal stealth locations.

I don't get many comments to my face, but I do get an occasional compliment. I don't know if anyone has commented negatively about them behind my back.

There was a woman with visible tattoos at my last place of employment. I don't think anyone ever made negative comments to her about them, but as her supervisor, I heard several complaints about it, and I think it would hurt her ability to rise into management.

A layman's guide to regional pizza styles
I really can't stand the New England-Greek style of pizza that is so common here in Massachusetts -- usually at the $TOWN House of Pizza. The almost fried crust (sounds kind of like the Old Forge style which I had never heard of before) and the liquefied cheese are just awful. Cape Cod (where we live) actually has pretty good pizza. It's not a certain style, but there are just a lot of good pizza places. My favorite is the Sweet Tomatoes chain -- super-thin crust, very good sauce, very fresh... [more]

***International Pizza Story***

My High School German class took a trip to Munich in my senior year. About 10-12 American kids with at least 4 years of German behind them. A couple of us go out for pizza on one of our first days there, and our lack of strangely colored sneakers and stonewashed denim must have pegged us as Americans, because the waitress gave us, in addition to the standard menus in German, a menu that had been translated into English. So we decided that... [more]
