Carrboro Cookout Meetup
I'm new to the Triangle, and was hoping there'd be a meetup soon. I'm not sure if the barbecue down here in North Carolina will match up to what I'm used to coming from New England, but I'll give it a shot, I guess.

How to track two debit cards on one account effectively?
My system involves two checking accounts. One called Bills and one caused Expenses. Bills gets filled up with the amount to cover our monthly utilities at the beginning of the month and those regular payments ONLY come out of Bills. Both of our debit cards draw from Expenses. If we run out of money in Expenses, we are out of money -- no dipping into Bills. We have Overdraft Protection on Expenses (covered by Savings) for the rare occasion when both my wife and I spend the last few dollars in the… [more]

If I might toot my own horn a little here, here is an example of a "Tell me what you hate" thread that went rather well. I was (still am, actually) considering getting an MLIS and I asked the MeFibrarian Brigade to tell me the bad parts about being a librarian.
I think the big differences between my question and nadawi's was that I avoided too much backstory (I could have talked about how I would be commuting to Simmons from Cape Cod, which I knew would get me… [more]

How do I stop offending people with my anxiety?
In the future, could you not come up with other reasons to leave the party for a little while? Making a beer run, for example, or picking up a friend at the airport?

Wikipedia Reliability Meter
I actually did a little research in this area for a paper last year. There have been several people who have done some studies that compare machine-rated articles to articles rated by human experts, and the machine-rated accuracy was not encouraging. I am in the middle of unpacking from a move, but if I can dredge up my bibliography later I'll post it here. If you have access to an academic journal database, you could try just searching it yourself for "wikipedia".

Nick Adenhart (1986-2009)
Most people think Boras is a jerk...Scott Boras' time at the microphone started with a solid two minutes of him bawling.
This probably says more about me that I should care to admit, but my first reaction to seeing Boras at the press conference was, "Quit faking it, slimebag."
What a sad, sad, frustrating story this is. Even more so because it makes me think about all the other less famous victims of preventable… [more]

The egg in the radiator is both satisfyingly MacGyverish and gives an excuse to get her scrounging deep in the woods, if that matters.

Yeah, these are kind of skirting the line, but my impression was that that rule was for questions like "3x2 + 5x - 6 = 0. What is x?" or "Compare and contrast the use of the giant glasses in Gatsby with Holden's obsession with Stradlater's fingernails in Catcher."

How can I ease the pain for my kids?
I think the key at this age is actually the aftermath of the "telling". They won't really understand or fully grasp just what "divorce" or even "moving out" means after one telling, so it will be the actions of you and your wife over the next few weeks that will stay with them and will really sink in. Make sure both you and your wife have some fun things planned for them (but still make sure they have to do the boring stuff that is part of life -- chores, homework,… [more]

Are they really 12 year old refs he's supposedly yelling at?
The refs at my 7-year-old daughter's soccer games look to be no more than 12 or 13. There are STRICT rules about contact with the refs in her league -- barring medical emergencies, only coaches may speak to the refs, and they may not question the ref's rulings at all. The fact that this guy treats 11 or 12 year old kids who are VOLUNTEERING (or being paid a pittance, though they are… [more]

I can't imagine the hell that would be having a conversation with this guy and trying to explain my concerns with his attitude and trying to get him to see my point of view. I can imagine phrases like "this is who I am, you're just going to have to deal with it" and "I'm not going to change who I am" being used a lot. Ugh. Seriously, the thought of it is exhausting.

Another flame-bait FPP.
You know what is an awesome little nugget of the MeFi experience? When you are reading a really bitchy, long MeTa thread with one user presenting a point of view that is almost universally acknowledged to be complete crap, and then, when you get to the end of the thread, you see an even more ridiculous comment by the OP, and then you realize that since you've been reading the thread for at least 15 minutes, you can refresh the thread and see a bunch of people going WHAAA?!… [more]

The whole "favorites = what?" dilemma that seems to come up on a weekly basis these days is like the discussion of MVP (Most Valuable Player) awards in sports. What does "Valuable" even mean? Is the award supposed to honor the best player? Then why not just call it Player of the Year or something? Is it supposed to go to the player who had the most impact on his team? What does that even mean? But really, the fact that the award is ambiguously named and not well defined… [more]

'Big Bad Question' as a Metafilter Subsite?
I've also seen "on the nose" used pejoratively in the sense of "obvious" or "facile," which maybe moves it a bit towards jacalata's reading.
Also, I kind of agree with WCityMike on this. I also loved "Spellsinger" as a kid, and I agree that the first book was pretty dark for a 10 or 12 year old.
I never read much of the Humanx books (maybe a couple of the Pip & Flinx ones?), but I played a neat RPG campaign set in that universe once (was it a GURPS subset at some point?).

There is a whole genre of art that does that to me. It is any art that is dedicated to extreme precision, extreme monotony, extreme repetition. Other things that give me the same reaction: Tibetan salt mandalas, detailed mosaics, pointillism, those ancient Incan stone walls with razor-thin joints, that widescreen Tetris game from a couple of weeks ago, etc. I have an almost visceral reaction to them, and it is really not… [more]

Can animal abuse be a 1 time thing?
Saying "It will never happen again" without a clear plan toward ensuring that it will never happen again sounds like part of the cycle of abuse to me.
I think the "clear plan" Sidhedevil mentions is the key. If there is no plan or no willingness to plan, I can't see staying with a person like that.

First of all, this seems not a little childish and immature. Second of all, what if you explain that it is not him that you distrust, but "lawyers". Just leave it vague like that. "What lawyers?" he says. "I don't know. Lawyers are always involved in that kind of estate stuff, right? Anyway, sign here, sweetie."

Due to the fact that bulldogs have breathing difficulties in general, my wife (the vet tech) does not recommend inducing vomiting, as that could cause an airway obstruction. If it was a solid piece of Shamwow, it may be too big to pass through and may have to be surgically removed.

Is this maybe a large part of the problem? If the negatives of Baltimore are not affecting you directly (and it sounds like they are not), why not spend less time dwelling on those problems. I know that is easier said than done, especially if you want to be a contributing member of your community.
