What is this strange phenomenon?
When speaking with the professional, he said that since 2007 there has been a surge of this problem-dogs all of a sudden soiling the house. He called local veterinarians and they all said it was epidemic.

I have worked in the veterinary field since 2005, and my wife has since 1994. Neither of us has any idea what you are talking about.

Sexy Baby!
So great. My wife and daughter are obsessed with the train wreck that is Toddlers and Tiaras, so I will say that Hanx is way too normal to fit in as a parent on that show. Also, where was the spraytanning?

Real pageant parents are HAPPY when their daughters don't win queen. If they don't place in their age group, that means they have won an overall prize, which is what they really want. Queen is for losers. Winners take home Grand Supreme.

I keep telling my wife that the show really needs to add little subtitle-type graphics to the "crowning" footage, like "Supreme Queen Beauty = 1st place, Losers bracket", "1st Runner Up,… [more]

Sorry to hear you are moving! We'll miss you at the next Triangle meet-up!

Would it be possible to drive to Atlanta with her and fly out from there? It would require a one-way car rental or something, but it's only a six hour drive, and you'll probably save a little on the cost of the tickets as well. She's still going to have to brave the International flight in the crate, but at least this way you avoid the layover problem.

Please remove your canine from my hand.
In veterinary medicine Chows are well known for being unpredictable and a bit defensive. No one who has experience in the field would be surprised by such a disclaimer. That said, I'd suggest saying nothing on your website or promotional materials, but if you are contacted by a Chow owner, simply tell the truth: "I'm sorry, I've been bitten by a Chow, and it's a bad association that I can't get over. I'm not able to walk your dog. My colleague, John Smith would be happy to walk your dog… [more]

What is wrong with my cat's whiz factory?
The next step diagnostically is probably referral to an Internal Medicine specialist and an ultrasound. You can probably get a consult and an ultrasound for $500ish, and then depending on the results, the specialist should be willing to discuss the costs/benefits of further testing and/or procedures. With urinary issues, there is a lot of stuff that is not going to be apparent in an x-ray -- ultrasound is much more effective.

No, I'm just here because I like cubicles
I can feel myself getting more and more frustrated about the difficulty in asserting myself as both the manager to go to for my team, and as a peer to the other managers in my organization.

Neither of these things have to do with not having an office. You could have the biggest, corneriest office in the building, but if your employees are going to their previous manager instead of you, you need to find a way to solve that problem that does not… [more]

Removing skunk smell with tomato juice is a myth. It merely covers up the smell. There is, however, a mixture that works fairly well, and I imagine it will work on your over-cologned cat. Mix the following:

¼ cup of baking soda
1 teaspoon of dish soap

Bathe the cat in it, being careful to avaoid the eyes. Let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse well. A repeat application may be needed (in the… [more]

Also my Rock Band bands will now be changing their names after every show. It would be great if the game could create some kind of metric for assessing the greatness of your band name and assigned you a modifier to the number of Fans gained per successful show based on how badass your name was. You could change your name to try and come up with a cooler one, but at a significant Fan penalty.

Too terrified of needles
I would try and call the office ahead of time and ask if it is possible to arrange your blood test for a time when the best phlebotomist in the place is available, and ask them if they could use the smallest gauge needle possible. Blame it on your severe phobia, and tell them how much you appreciate their flexibility. A skilled phlebotomist and a narrow needle make all the difference in the world.

The most godawful game ever
If you played them now, all Atari 2600 would be revealed as terrible. The "you died, try again from the beginning" mechanic in particular--how did anyone survive that era?

It was actually worse in the early NES/SMS era, as 2600 games rarely had any kind of "winning" or "finishing" to them, just higher scores and higher levels. The NES and SMS brought in the idea of winning a video game, but early games still had no kind… [more]

What is the best thing to do for my cat?
According to several veterinary oncologists I have worked with, lung cancer from second-hand smoke is not really an issue for dogs and cats. It is theorized that it is partially that their noses filter out more of the harmful chemicals than we do and partially that lung cancer takes so long to develop that even long-lived cats simply do not live long enough to be affected by it. There is a slightly increased risk of cancers in the nose and mouth (this is where the muzzle-as-filter theory comes… [more]

Moving out of state -- what do I do with my bank account?
When I worked for Bank of America (over five years ago now) there were "Model Bank" states and there was "CA, WA & ID". Assuming the situation is the same, you should face little to no disruption moving from WA to CA. Check with the manager of your local branch, though. They will know the current situation.
posted to Ask MetaFilter by Rock Steady at 10:44 AM on February 24, 2011 marked best answer
Yes. Because of the way the Bank's computer systems were connected, it would be a major pain to try and use a "CA, WA & ID" account for day-to-day banking in a Model Bank state (all the other states). There were plans to integrate the two back when I was at the bank, so it may be less of an issue now.
posted to Ask MetaFilter by Rock Steady at 10:49 AM on February 24, 2011
Actually, now that I think about it, I believe the plans were to integrate WA and ID into Model Bank, leaving CA as it's own entity, so you may be in for another round of account switching, sharding. Seriously though, check at your branch. Dealing with the divide was a daily situation when I was at the Bank (in Massachusetts), so your question will not be abnormal to them at all.

You were doing it wrong
Well, in this thread I learned something that, had I known it 15 or so years ago, would have saved me an inestimable amount of time and mental anguish. If you were a NES player, you may want to prepare yourself.

In Super Mario Bros., if you hold A while pressing Start, you will continue play at the beginning of the World you died on. For example, if you died on World 7-3, you will begin on World 7-1.

I know, breathe, breathe...

they are still mostly 'guess the verb' games

Like Halo is a "shoot the Covenant" game, Minecraft is a "dig the rocks" game, and basketball is a "put the ball in the hoop" game.
