Inspired by this post about the XKCD Survey and this comment by The Underwear Monster, I thought it might be fun to do a Big MeFi Survey along the same lines - mostly goofy questions that we can sic our local datawranglers on and see what fun, weird, fascinating things drop out.
I'm looking for a secluded beachfront cabin to rent for 2-3 nights in the southeastern US (ideally the Carolinas, but Virginia, Georgia, and even Northern Florida would be a possibility). Essentials are: 1) on a sandy beach with swimmable water, and 2) as secluded from other people as possible. Budget would be less than $300/night.
Help me impress my 14-year-old daughter (for once). Who is the young actor portraying the college student in this Southwest Airlines commercial? She thinks he might have been in one of the Harry Potter movies.
Inspired by this thread, I'd like to go all out wrapping Christmas gifts for my wife this year. What ideas, concepts, methods, etc. have you used in the past, or seen online that are sure to impress?
I'm looking at buying a low-end Macbook for web browsing and MS Office (primarily Powerpoint). Basically, it's coming down to a 2009 or 2010 Macbook, as I'd prefer to run Yosemite, but I want to keep my budget below $500. I have used a friend's 2009 Macbook fairly regularly and I'm happy with its general performance, but I have a few specific questions.
Cat-Scan.com is one of the strangest sites I've seen in some time. I have no idea how these people got their cats wedged into their scanners, or why.
Hey, it's been too long, and we should celebrate the big 1-5 in style. I'm thinking dinner somewhere and then casual drinks nearby for people who want to join up after dinner. I'm suggesting Raleigh because that's closest to me, but we could certainly do it elsewhere in the Triangle if that works better for people.
We celebrate Moderators' Day 2014 with a slightly heavy heart, as this marks the first celebration of the holiday (which dates back to 2007) when we have fewer moderators than we did last year. Still, MetaFilter's recent "grassroots fundraising drive" demonstrates that the community and the website are in excellent health going forward, in no small part due to the efforts of our Best Of The Web moderating team, past, present and future (I for one, welcome our robot moderator overlords).
The dramatic second season of this "prequel" series to Psycho comes to an end.
Homestar Runner is back. The Brothers Chaps have added new content to homestarrunner.com for the first time since 2010.
What Avengers-themed breakfast can I cook for my daughter's birthday this weekend? It doesn't have to be a recipe featured in the films, anything inspired by the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be fine.
What is the Williamsburg of your city? [SLGawker]
Two very different commercials about mothers.
1. Old Spice "Momsong"
2. P&G "Pick Them Back Up"
Bring your tissues for that second one.

Passweird - Passwords too gross to steal. This website will create for you a password that is not only secure*, but is also so utterly repulsive that not even the most hardened criminal, identity thief, NSA agent, or jealous boyfriend would ever want to use it. *ish, but probably not. Don't use these for real.
From Retronaut, please enjoy these stylish selections from the 1990 J.C. Penney Christmas Catalog. Come for the Beetlejuice pajamas, stay for the "ice-washed" denim overalls.
After (intentionally?) missing a last second penalty kick, the US Men's National Team beat Mexico in Columbus by a now famous final score. Following the game, the team watched Honduras hold on for a 2-2 draw against Panama which officially cemented the team's slot in the 2014 World Cup. An unassuming venue [autoplay video], Crew Stadium was the first purpose-built soccer facility in the US, and it has become the preferred location for the US to take on its most-powerful CONCACAF rival.
Hut, hut, hike! The HGH has been injected, the CTE has been diagnosed, the ACLs have been torn, and now it's time for some NFL football! Please join the MeFi Fantasy Football League. It's a Standard scoring, 10 team league, and the draft is scheduled for 9:00 PM (Eastern) on Sunday, August 25th. The league password can be found inside.
Five years ago I put forth a humble suggestion that June 13th be celebrated each year as Moderator's Day. We've celebrated it more or less enthusiastically over the years, and I just wanted to take this opportunity to specifically thank mathowie, jessamyn, cortex, vacapinta, restless_nomad, taz, LobsterMitten, goodnewsfortheinsane, and pb for their hard work and dedication. Thanks, guys. You can take the rest of the day off. We'll be good, I promise.
I am considering writing a novel/story that involves the idea of people living among us who are somewhere between three and eight inches tall, but I don't know enough about the physics of sound to know if normal height humans would be able to speak to these tiny people. Would their voices be too high-pitched to hear at all, or just very difficult to understand? Would our voices be understandable to them?
From Lucy Cooke's Slothville comes a bucket of sloths in support of her new book, A Little Book of Sloth.
We are switching from AT&T cell phone to service to Verizon, and I'd like to perform the switch smoothly while also using one of the new phones as a Christmas gift. Your advice on the proper procedure would be welcome.
I am constructing an ARG for my 10-year-old daughter, and I'd like some help coming up with puzzles.
What is the green flag with a blue canton that appears on the back of the uniforms of the University of Vermont's men's basketball team? It can be seen fairly clearly here and here.
Who are the MeFi Olympians?
A couple of Guitar Hero: World Tour (Wii) instrument silencing questions.
I've gone ahead and created a MeFi wiki page for our little Diplomacy-playing subcommunity (spawned in this MeTa thread).
I need to generate the complete series of 5 digit numbers. The catch? Can only use even digits (0,2,4,6,8). I'd like to accomplish this in Excel, if possible.
MS Excel Question: If I have a column with a range of dates in it, is there a formula that will tell me how many years ago that date was from today?
Worst Word Mashup Trademark Filings. From the guy who brought you the FARK NSFW shenanigans and the Dreamcast 2 foofaraw. Innovisioneering? Really?
50 Answers. Like AskMe, but not helpful, and in comic form.
Dice Stacking. Yes, it is a thing. Yes, it is impressive. Yes, it is real. Yes, it is so impressive that you will doubt that it is real.
Is there anywhere to look at Pella replacement windows in or around London?
What is the incredibly common piece of movie trailer music that kicks in at about :54 of this trailer for No Reservations?
Backtaggers: When you backtag an AskMe post, do you base it solely on the original question, or do you incorporate information about comments/answers?
Backtaggers: When you backtag an AskMe question, do you base your tags solely on the original question, or do you incorporate information about comments/answers? I realize there is probably no hard and fast rule, I'm just curious how y'all are doing it.
Am I killing my laptop by holding it sideways (like a book)?
Best headline ever. The AP lets it's geek flag fly in an article about high-wire artists crossing a river in Korea. [thanks kottke]
Librarians -- rain on my parade! What didn't they tell you in school? What are the worst parts of your job? What do you regret about your schooling/early career?
My wife has fairly severe contact dermatitis on her face. She has tried several different types of "hypoallergenic" brands of makeup, including Almay and Neutrogena, but they all give her hives. Are any made-up MeFites familiar with brands/lines that will not cause her allergies to flare up?
I'm sorry to do this to you, but you must share my agony. Let me know if you get #41 (I have to skip it every time).
I'm a bit obsessive about my album art, but I never had anything for the songs I've snatched from MeFi Music (chococat, I'm looking in your direction). So I whipped up a little something that I thought I'd share with the community. It's nothing special, but perhaps it will help fill out your Cover Flow.
Where's my remote? If you can't tell me that, does there exist a universal remote with a cordless phone-like paging feature?
This bone was found on a Cape Cod, Massachusetts beach this week. It is about 3" tall and about 3" from tip to tip of the "horns." It looks like a vertebra of some type, but I can find no images of similar ones online. Any marine biologists out there care to tell me what kind of a bone it is? Other images inside.
What's wrong with my 'fridge? The refrigerator is only cooling down to about 60 deg. F, and the freezer is only going down to 30 deg. F, even on maximum cool settings. Secondarily, is it worth getting it repaired, and is that even possible?
I'd like some recommendations for opera music to be played at a funeral.
What's a great April Fool's Day prank my 5-year-old daughter and I can play on her Mom (my wife) tomorrow? Nothing too devious or disturbing, please.
What websites will my 80-year-old grandfather love?
NameMyCatFilter: So we are fostering a kitten that was rescued from a house in Mississippi destroyed by Katrina -- a situation that will likely become permanent, and now we are thinking about a name for the little guy. Constraints inside.
