FTP Synchronise
Well, what I did for pretty much the same problem is have my project under SVN control, so when I'm ready to make changes, I commit, and then I have an update.sh on my server that does:
cd project/dir
svn up
apachectl restart
svn takes care of the delta changes, and source control is smart anyway. with cygwin, you could run the script locally with 'ssh root@myserver /project/update.sh', and you can even do ssh key exchange and make a... [more]

Help with Quitting Smoking After 47 Years
What about snus? I've successfully stopped smoking using it, its a harm reduction strategy rather then a complete cessation of tobacco, and it's been shown in a few large scale studies to not increase any rates of cancer, except for a small increase in pancreatic cancer. It's a product that's been around for 300 years in Sweden. Here's a mefi link about it. I use it because I'd much rather use some natural pasteurized (not fermented like chewing tobacco) tobacco then some sort of... [more]

AMD vs Intel
it don't matter which 'cause you aren't getting top of the line. (if you were, intel is winning right now with their core 2 duo series AFAIK)

marked best answer
edbyford: both those setups look definitely sufficient for the kind of browsing that parents do, and should last them a few years. my only worry is i've never heard of CCL before. try giving newegg a try, they have never ever let me down, and also have nice cheap boxen too.

I'm building a computer -- what do I need to know?
I can't recommend NZXT cases enough. Completely toolless install of components (except for mobo and power supply), and NO BUSTED KNUCKLES. Cheap cases always have sharp edges that kill the crap out of your hands. All the edges on my NZXT Nemesis Elite are folded/rounded.

Good answers all, I'll definitely pick up those books. Through MaHaGoN's links, I found this which was great. MaHaGoN, you WOULD'VE gotten best answer but you like Boston, and I can't support that :).

Are there any good online guides to hard drive partitioning?
We'll, if you aren't installing any other operating systems, then no, there's no point in more than two, and one could argue that there's no reason for more then one, other then to make XP reinstallation a tiny bit easier if you decide to reformat, or for better organization. It gives you no added protection from a HDD crash. I would recommend against it, you might as well just get another harddrive for your data. As for how to do it, there are plenty of software, paid and free, that can take... [more]

Which backpack fits my needs?
I freaking love my Osprey Meridian 22". It fits in carry on, I can put at least a weeks worth of clothes in it, its durable, and I've used the day pack every single day for the past year+ as my commuter backpack, hitting the NYC subways with my laptop, blackberry, other phone, camera, headphones, mp3 player, a book/magazine, etc, and I use the main pack biweekly when i travel home (free laundry!). I've also gone on 3 vacations using it as my main luggage. The only issue I've had is a few... [more]

Things you think about driving in Seattle
A few years back on route 78 in NJ, they were closing off lanes nightly near Berekley Heights to shave the middle of the highway down and make it even with the grooves.

Tracking stolen ipod and laptop possible?
I'm pretty sure you can report the serial numbers (if you know them) to apple, and if the robbers attempt to take them in for tech support, apple will hold them. I hope you get your shit back, I feel your pain. Keep tabs on craigslist and ebay for the stuff.

It's a gas
One trick to find leaks is to put some water in a bowl with some dish soap in it. Put your soapy mixture on all the joints and spots where pipes connect to each other. The leak will make the soap bubble where the leak is.

Tablets, the lease of these
I had an HP TC1100, and while it had its share of technical problems, it was really really awesome. It was great party because it was really small, only a 12" screen, with a detachable keyboard to shave even more weight off. I loved it, it really felt 'right' browsing the web. It had a nice thick pen too, and a wacom tablet surface that worked really well. I'm all for tablets! Sorry I cant help you with new models, but yeah, tablets are the future.

LIGHT SHOW
I want to do the same thing, and I've always drooled at the Phidgets LED64. Hooks in to your computer with USB, programmable in a bunch of different languages (Python! yay!). and looks pretty awesome. Way easier then making your own PCB.

Well, I Was Walking Down the Street One Day
I'm definitely on it as well, as I found a car in Jersey City and talked to the driver like Science!, but it hasn't been added yet. The car they had there was the Chevy Colbalt with the red camera sticking out the top. The guy had a Dell laptop inside with a GPS version of google maps running and tracking where he went. Also like Science!, he was surprised that I knew what he was doing.

Where the Gypsy Angels Go
I go to seaside at least once a year, and yes, its still sleazy in that good jersey way. both piers have new rides run by the same shady eastern europeans, and lucky leos is still there with it's time crisis 3 goodness. oh, and funnel cake.
... and now i'm remembering how good the buffalo chicken cheesesteaks are at Steak and Hoagies, across from the sawmill. now i'm hungry :(

What should I photograph in Yellowstone?
Some photos that I took (this is from a big long trip, but keep clicking next and you'll see a bunch of yellowstone pics). The order of the pictures is: old falthful, upper geyser basin, grand prismatic, lower geyser basin, upper/lower falls, tower falls, mammoth, out the north entrance.
