Ask post: PhilosophyFilter: The burden of choice- When did choice come into play?
The more recent existentialists (French) suggested that there was no authority above one to make you choose this or that but rather that we are always free to choose one or another way (ex: there is no god that mandates stuff etc)...and though we now think we are "free" because we do not have
god or gods to tell us what to do, nonetheless we do have upbringing (family) and culture that probably helps inform our otherwise "free" choices. The important thing, though,... [more]

work your way up. Begin with the prof, then the Dean and then, if possible, provost or dean of student affairs. Do not go to the top people first.

Ask post: How can a resizer distinguis nude from non-nude?
some further info on my nude resizer. I no longer much use it and have others that cause no problem of deletion. My site has many nudes--very tasteful ones I would not call porn--and I get some 5 thousand hits per day, so no one would call a company to report me. I continue to use the resizer (it is on the desktop and handy) but I avoid nudes. Use another instead for the nudes and for a few years now, no problem with deletions.

the software mentioned just above this seems what might be at work. I had thought short time ago that since the image is taken from a source, the resizing outfit might determine by the html of the site where photo appears that it focuses upon nudes, therefore they delete based on point of origin of photo. I could test by taking a nice piece of artwork, classic stuff, that has breasts showing and see if my guess works, but since I have a fine place for resizing without fear of deletion, I will... Ask post: Help me get a 16 year old boy to read.
I was many years ago in the army during the Korean war. In Korea, a friend doing grad work encouraged me to read books he had read for school. Boring! When I began college, I had courses with books, lots of them. Boring. A friend there got me reading a few popular books and that got me going...read stuff closer to your own time. I would suggest some good bios or autorbios on athletes. There are very fine ones on elite runners...any runner will gobble them up.

Ask post: The contents of my soul, in a box, under my bed.
Peripheral remark: there are many authors--Kafka springs to mind--who left explicit orders for work to be destroyed. It wasn't.

When you die, you will not know this but often wishes are ignored in funeral arrangements etc, so if you want them destroyed you need to destroy them yourself. One way out: keep them with your lawyer with instructions for him to destroy when you die.

Though I feel sorry for your friend I am constantly annoyed by those states (and resdents) who eschew unions, decent regulation and anything that would protect them and then, later, find that they have a problem...don't mourn, boys, organize.

Ask post: How to bring the intimacy back?
Just a [assing and perhaps connected note:
I was friendly with some academics who taught marriage therapy and had private practices. One told me that by the time a couple went for therapy it was too late, usually, but not to tell people what he told me because it would be bad for his business.

Ask post: body language women use
Note on my posted question: the "pose" hs nothing to do with me or my "look." I note this crossed arm position on elevators, in places where i have no eye contact with women, so that it is not some bodily reaction to my presence. I believe men will do this as almost a gesture of defiance, but do not do it nearly as often as do women. I see women in this pose on the beach and here note men, with no pockets in bathing suits, do not do this.

Artie Shaw, a very great musician, was married any number tof times to very attractive women. His advice on breaking up and divorce: (1) call your lawyer, (2) call a cab.

You will find more fine boyfriends, their friends, a whole new circle etc so why stayed a part of a dwindling group, who will either resent you or make a move on you.

Ask post: Is this article really the work of Alexander Cockburn?
I have seldom if ever found him to have a sense of humor. He is wrong when he says ROTC students carry guns around. Carry? yes. Ammo? NO. In fact the military does not issue live ammo for soldiers on American soil for their rifles unless for special assignments, ie, guard duty etc.

Would you want to be on campus when some students, with 6 packs of beer, some pot, and a gun or two with ammo went to a frat party?

Ask post: What is it about Rudy?
Rudy's only appeal for many voters is what is thought to be his record on 9/11. But on the negative side: the firefighters say he screwed up badly. He moved the 911 call center into the Twin Towers against advice when it had earlier been attacked (he was told to move it to Brooklyn); the NY phone emergecny system was out of date and for a long time he did not do anything about it. His stance on 9/11 seems in part earned because of the failure of Bush at the same time do get immediately involved.... [more]

First, do make the call lthat others here suggest.
2nd: there is true depression (see the book by William Styron; read up on Abe Lincoln) and then there is the "depression": that is a rough time that we undergo because of this or that circumstance. Real Depression is clinical, hormonal, genetic and mankind has always had a percentage of people with this, not to be confused with bi-polar, which at least has its highs.

Ask post: slavery in pre-emancipation America
The whites tried but it was not easy to make slaves of Indians and it was not worth the trouble. On the other hand, there were many Indians who kept blacks as slaves. Over time, many intermarried with indian women and we have instances of mixed blood folks around today. In fact, my daughter-in-law has both black and indian blood handed on from some time ago. The Golden Hill tribe in and around Bridgeport, Ct is trying to get recognition in order to open casinos, and many detractors point out... [more]

Ask post: Information on pre-Zionist militant Judaism?
There are lots of references noted in answers here but be aware that history as we know it today is not the same as history as it is "recorded" in the bible or in other places. The sense of objectivity in history develops much later on. Even the "histories" Shakespeare used for his history plays are not objective (and are called Chronicles). This is not of course to deny that Masada etc did not take place but rather that numbers often given for battles etc are often... [more]

All the advice above is good but what needs to be stressed is that you need aerobic and also anerobic (sp?>), that is, building uyp your heart and lungs by endurance stuff (as in running) and building up your bones (as in weight lifting). One without the other leaves the job incomplete.

445supermag: yes. I jotted down that name and will look into it. I tend to get second and third opinions and thus wanted to know more by way of those commenting here. I note, for example, that the reply above yours suggests that any federal loan goes through (private now) Sallie May..Why would this be so, and, if true, why two agencies rather than one, one being now private and the other governmental?

G. did an honest and hard day's work trying to keep afloat a sinking ship (using sump pumps), but his view(s) are to no avail. Clever writing on Buckeley's part but I'll stick with Galbraith as having a wiser perspective in most matters than the conservative, who dismisses him with a compliment

In Connecticut, there is also a disclosure law...It seems your dad disclosed what he thought might be a potential problem. Additionally, the inspector is more likely to be responsible should the new owner get up[set and try to do something. Your father's being worried is a sign that he is a good and decent person.

I am not aware of any but then I do not speak Spanish and thus never go to any Spanish sites, at which I imagine there will be some stuff associated. However, the issue really is this> A day without immigrtant workers--they do not show up for jobs; and/or a day in which bloggers support by not posting that day...since the net is more private, it doesn't matter. It matters only in pushing or advocating a day without immigrant workers--that is posting prior to the "boycott."

I would suggest the Lawyer route. First, he can not turn you in. Second, he may have some solid ideas on restitution or making amends of one kind or another. Third, going to a priest and/or therapist might help but there remains the possibility that what was done, taken, etc remains as a sore point and thus trying to make resitution might ease your way toward confession, opening up via priest/therapist.

Sleeping on a matress only of course can be comfortable. The box spring has "give" to it, and thus lengthens the life of the matress. In fact, you might after a number of years need to change your matress for a new one but the boxspring should still be of use. Do you change your matress from top to bottom and turn it over everyso often? Why, if it is comfortable.
