Ask post: I'm building a computer -- what do I need to know?
Definitely go with 2x2 GB ram and a bigger PSU. I generally spend more on my MB, because that determines your future upgrade path, so you want the best you can get. You're probably OK with a 2GHZ processor, if you need to take money from somewhere else. I'd also go with a raid card(or maybe a MB that supports it) and two of those drives, too, but that might be a little advanced to start out with. Makes installing the OS a little different, but increases performance and mirroring can save... [more]

Ask post: Bring us (back) onto the web!
Y'all are making this more complicated than it needs to be. Flickr is free, hosts pics and video, and you can give them custom titles, tags so they're organized, and comment on them as much as you like, and share them with whoever you like with no coding or hosting necessary. The Flickr guest pass thing means they don't even have to sign up for Flickr accounts themselves.

Picasa and photobucket will work, but they're more like holding bins. Flickr lets you do more... [more]

Ask post: Go away KPMG logo
I've heard that using granulated sugar and rubbing gently can remove logos without scratching the finish, but I haven't tried it personally. Maybe one of those "magic eraser" sponge things?

Ask post: Money money money, Must be funny
The most important factors are your overall debt to credit ratio and the age of your accounts. Carrying a balance or actively using your credit won't improve your score. See this excellent Fatwallet thread.

Ask post: What are some ways I can improve a digital library?
I know there are a lot of people in academic publishing on friendfeed, so you could try asking there. Maybe Bill or this guy could steer you in the right direction.

Seconding the fridge. I use that method here in New Orleans, and I'll put our humidity up against anyone's.

Ask post: Is there any pointing backing up DVDs if you can download them?
You can probably find everything you want out there, but if you've got more than 20 or 30 movies, it'll turn into a hassle sorting through which torrents are good and which are crappy or in a different language or poorly processed or whatever.

I'm not going to get into the larger debate except to say that the digital copy that you can make from your purchased media is really no different from the digital copy you can download, so the source of it at this point shouldn't matter to you.

Well, dealerships often offer free carfax access for their inventory, but I don't know if that's too helpful in your case.

Ask post: My body hates jogging...
Another thing to look at is your stride. You want to be rolling from your heel to your toes with a long stride, not bouncing up and down on the balls of your feet like I see so many people, especially women, do. It's easier to use a good stride when you're sprinting than when you're jogging, because you're going faster and the momentum automatically lengthens your stride and keeps you from the up and down bouncing action.

It wouldn't be a coverage issue, would it? I know I sometimes get 3G and sometimes not, but that's in the US.

Ask post: How can I get a good deal with AT&T retention specialists?
If you want a good deal, you're not going to get it on the iphone. They've got no incentive to give you a deal. The Nokia N75 has 3G, a nice screen, and it's free. The N95-4 has 3G, 8GB onboard, GPS, etc, etc, and is less than the iphone. Since you have to get a special, expensive, data plan(which nonetheless isn't any faster) with the iphone, there's little room for retention to cut you a deal. The Nokia can use the standard medianet plans, which are already kinda cheap.... [more]

Ask post: Do I have to repay my (soon to be former) employer?
Well, if you signed the agreement before the trip, you're pretty much stuck. However, it doesn't hurt to ask/beg/lay a guilt trip on them. You do have one bargaining chip, and that's to not work the next two weeks at all. That would certainly put you on bad terms with them, though, and probably wouldn't be worth the $800 in the long run.

Ask post: Iphone? Should be....My Phone!
Since the iphone is always connected, I would think 3G would be real important. They only released it without 3G because they knew most people who would buy it weren't heavy data users and wouldn't be turned off by the slowness.

Be aware that there are many 3G handsets on the market and available now, with the N95 by Nokia being the current winner in terms of web browsing, and it has many feature the iphone doesn't have, such as a fully-functional SMS and IM client that... [more]

Ask post: Dating a divorced man. Help me rationalize this relationship mess before I gouge my eyeballs out.
I really hope you're not going after a 29 years old jobless possibly gay loser just to piss off your overprotective father.

You don't have to pursue anyone. You're 20. Flirt and have fun, and don't worry about a "relationship". When you've gotten over the whole "I wouldn't want anyone that would settle for me" nonsense then you might be ready.

Ask post: Help me believe in myself
States of motivation and self-esteem have a momentum to them. Small steps in any direction can lead to bigger steps in that direction, so don't obsess over the eventual goal, but rather focus on doing each little thing right moment-by-moment.

Sunlight and exercise also helps a great deal.

Ask post: Photo Opportunity
The one scenario under which I would consider buying it on credit would be if it was certain that you'd make substantially more money with it now than you currently do with your film camera, and the opportunity to make that money would be come and gone if you waited too long. It doesn't sound like that's the case, here.

This is all academic, though, because you can't get a credit card without income.

Ask post: How can paper be bleached of its text?
There's a couple things I'd try: bleach, hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol, maybe even mineral spirits (though the paper probably wouldn't last long in that stuff, depending).

Not knowing anything about the chemistry of printed ink, I'm assuming the stuff is at least partially soluble in a non-polar solvent.

A solution of laundry stain remover might also work.

Ask post: I'm not religious. Why is it that all the girls I meet are?
You don't seem to have a problem meeting people, so try to keep in mind that not everyone is religious and you'll have to find them eventually.

There are places where you tend to find more religious and less religious people. Academics, artsy types, party animals generally aren't very religious, whereas you'll find a higher percentage in sports.

Ask post: Why are some black people afraid of my dog?
Yeah, instead of "from the northeast" I should have said "not from the South" but I didn't think someone would care enough to call me out on it. Anyways, it's definitely real. I've asked black people about this, and "we were raised around dogs trained to guard/fight" is what they told me.

It's things like this(and the weak-ass MeTa callout) that make me think that people in the South are less racist in many ways.

Ask post: How to get over a nasty breakup
That's the problem with calling a relationship "serious".

For the record, just because you sleep with someone, it doesn't mean you're automatically monogamous and "serious". It's a fucked up situation, because you usually can't just ask "so are we serious now" and get an answer that you can trust, so just be aware in the future that people don't know what they really feel in the heat of the moment, and will tell you... Ask post: post hoc ergo propter hoc
Usually this kind of thing involves people substituting their conception of the world for reality, and there are ample opportunities to point out where reality is inconsistent with their working model of it. People who are smart, but don't have a lot of time for reflection learn to make more-or-less correct snap judgments and to rely on their working models of a situation instead of continually observing the reality of the situation.

Strange as it may sound, I'd... [more]

Ask post: Burger Time
I like chuck OK, but I find it a little fatty and prefer to go with top round. To really take it over the top, I trim the fat from the top round and replace it weight-for-weight with smoked bacon, then grind twice to make sure it's well mixed. A little garlic in the grind is good too, and I really like the smoked sea salt and peppercorn mix at my local grocery. A dash of tamari and worcestershire is nice to replace salt with, and helps keep the burgers juicy.... [more]
