Hey, don't get me wrong. I think the site's great and so was the comment, but I thought I remembered something about not linking to your own stuff in a blatantly self-promotional way, which is what's happening here, with no disclosure of the fact it was a self-link, and that's really the issue, isn't it?

woot.com takes the approach of replacing certain words people say a lot in the forums, such as "Bag of Crap" and "refurb" with funny stuff. "Bag of Crap" has been translated to "Bandolier of Carrots", "Badgers on Crack", "Big ol' Carpathian", and many other ridiculous phrases.
Matt probably doesn't want to belittle helpless n00bs, though, so we should all just snicker to ourselves when we see it.

Not to mention that it totally doesn't make it to the RSS feed, where as the more that is inside does. Since it's the kinda thing that newb's do, mostly, there really isn't any way to stop it.

I didn't say anything here I wouldn't have said to the guy's face. I mean, until the "Why are all IT people lazy and imcompetent?" question, I just shook my head, but if he can dish it, he should be able to take it.
But yeah, I took the wrong tone here, and I'm getting what I deserve. Flame on.

It seems he just likes recommendations from the web at large about big decisions. Some of the questions are kinda silly, though.... [more]

You know, funny as it sounds, this site really is kinda undiscovered. I mean, less than 1% of the world's internet users visit this site regularly, and probably far less than 1% of PC magazine's readership.

With things like Zabasearch available nowadays, pretty much anybody can get your personal info. of course, the quality of that info is often suspect, but the uses to which this info is put is something we're going to have to have a big talk about at some point, so it might as well be now. We being pretty much the entire nation.
I think if it's online, it's fair game, but this doesn't absolve you from the duty to not be an asshole.

Because, you know, all MeFites come from only ONE nation. *cough*"
Hey, I can only speak for myself, you'll have to handle things on your side of the pond. I do think it's something the nation that I'm part of will have to talk about sooner rather than later.

In my defense, I think it did add context. I gained insight into why you're so cranky when you post at the Consumerist. ;-)
Just kidding - I think you're great, and that you add value to the discussions in which you participate. Honestly, I just happened to come across the two posts one right after the other, and I posted the cross links because I thought it was neat to make the connection. I think comments from people who actually know what they're talking about, and comments from people who're mostly guessing are both good, as long as they're addressing the question and providing a decent theory or rationale. The lack of a "Warning, I have no clue what I'm talking about" before aithoritative-sounding posts is something you just have to get used to, both on and offline.

I understand that many of the posts are slightly different, and that a different kind of discussion will happen here, but the links above are all single-link news items that are more the kind of thing that BoingBoing and Fark specialize in.

You don't find the same correlation with material found on other sites as much as with BoingBoing. BoingBoing also doesn't have a discussion forum, and I've often wanted to see what people think about stuff posted there. The question is, should we serve as their de facto discussion forum, or are people creative enough to come up with uniquely interesting things.
I understand some duplication will occur, but half the stories in a 24... [more]

So let me get this straight. The green is for thoughtful answers and the grey is for pile-ons?
My questions(in case you missed them) were:
Are we serving as the discussion board for BB?
- It looks like the answer is no, since things tend to show up here first.
Why the sudden uptick in posts appearing on both sites?
- Who knows? That's why I asked! I was inviting wild speculation, not... [more]

That's an interesting theory, Jimbob, but both MeFi and BB have been around for quite some time, and neither have "Post to" bookmarklet, as do Digg and delicious. There's little overlap between Slashdot and MeFi, and Digg and delicious are completely different kinds of sites from those two. So yeah, there's more content being spread around and noticed by more people, but nothing has happened this week to explain the five-fold difference between... [more]

This whole deal is kinda amazing, to me. I mean, I grew up in the South, and the whole referring to someone by their racial appearance is kinda like referring to someone according to what clothes they're wearing. There's no slur implied, and I didn't get that from her post. If she had called them wetbacks, now, that would have been a different thing.
I sure hope she gets out of there soon...I mean, they're probably all decent family people, but no good ever comes of... [more]
