woot.com takes the approach of replacing certain words people say a lot in the forums, such as "Bag of Crap" and "refurb" with funny stuff. "Bag of Crap" has been translated to "Bandolier of Carrots", "Badgers on Crack", "Big ol' Carpathian", and many other ridiculous phrases.

Matt probably doesn't want to belittle helpless n00bs, though, so we should all just snicker to ourselves when we see it.

With things like Zabasearch available nowadays, pretty much anybody can get your personal info. of course, the quality of that info is often suspect, but the uses to which this info is put is something we're going to have to have a big talk about at some point, so it might as well be now. We being pretty much the entire nation.

I think if it's online, it's fair game, but this doesn't absolve you from the duty to not be an asshole.

I think comments from people who actually know what they're talking about, and comments from people who're mostly guessing are both good, as long as they're addressing the question and providing a decent theory or rationale. The lack of a "Warning, I have no clue what I'm talking about" before aithoritative-sounding posts is something you just have to get used to, both on and offline.

You don't find the same correlation with material found on other sites as much as with BoingBoing. BoingBoing also doesn't have a discussion forum, and I've often wanted to see what people think about stuff posted there. The question is, should we serve as their de facto discussion forum, or are people creative enough to come up with uniquely interesting things.

That's an interesting theory, Jimbob, but both MeFi and BB have been around for quite some time, and neither have "Post to" bookmarklet, as do Digg and delicious. There's little overlap between Slashdot and MeFi, and Digg and delicious are completely different kinds of sites from those two. This whole deal is kinda amazing, to me. I mean, I grew up in the South, and the whole referring to someone by their racial appearance is kinda like referring to someone according to what clothes they're wearing. There's no slur implied, and I didn't get that from her post. If she had called them wetbacks, now, that would have been a different thing.
