If I Make This School Better, I Can Change the World! Um, right?

I'm looking for some research or (last resort) anecdotal stories about the effect of improved/improving schools on communities/neighborhoods.

Quick! I need a Quickbooks Wizard!

Feh. I'm straightening out the accounts of a not-for-profit as a volunteer and putting them onto Quickbooks. Before I got my hands on their books, someone paid the same bill twice. How do I enter two checks for one bill and still take the credit on a future bill?

Please explain gas company jargon before I explode

I'm helping out a small not-for-profit with their financials and cost-containment. I've received a letter from our local natural gas provider which is confusing and (of course) it has been impossible to find anyone at the company who can give me a straight answer. So, it is up to me to decide, should we take their offer or not when it comes to signing a contract for gas rates?

Big BIG Books

Where to find those VERY large storybooks that children's librarians use for storytelling hours? I've searched for "large", "big" and "oversized" storybooks to no avail.

So, where do you keep the brown baby Jesus?

Trying to find a nativity scene that doesn't have a white Anglo-Saxon looking holy family. Not having much luck.

What is it? A Japanese Comic Book? Or something else?

We found this comic book (or whatever it is) in the house among the previous owners' things. It was in a box of papers from the 1930's and 1940's but I can't guarantee that it is as old as that. I scanned the cover and a few pages, but cannot read Japanese. It's as thick as a copy of Wired Magazine (many pages). Any ideas?

I know. I suck. I forgot your birthday AGAIN.

Why do I have a mental block about birthdays? And what techniques could I use to be more respectful of others' birthdays?

Lost in translation...because I cannot read hiragana.

I have had some interesting works of art in my possession for four years. They have what appears to be writing on them in Japanese characters and I'm extremely interested in knowing what they say. As fate would have it,

How to keep the neighbors entertained?

We have a block party in our (Chicago) neighborhood every year and I've been asked to help with kids' games. I'm not a fan of traditional competitive games. So, I'm looking for some unusual ideas that will appeal to kids and adults alike...

Proof that guys think with their...?

Researchers have discovered men with an unusual form of dementia have a higher rate of vasectomy than men the same age who are cognitively normal. Okay, so maybe it should be that men think with their cojones? But will this be enough of a risk to outweigh the declared benefits of this procedure?

Is there a Dr. House in the house?

After a long battle with mysterious chronic health symptoms, I'd like a "medical detective" to help me get to the bottom of what might be ailing me. But, what kind of doctor do I need? (If you are squeamish, move along...nothing to see here.)

Pimp My Blogroll

Has anyone come across a Movable Type blogroll plug-in similar to this Wordpress blogroll plug-in (in that it can expand and contract)?

Which insider is selling their stock?

When an insider sells their shares of stock in a company, is there a way to find out WHO sold their stock quickly thereafter?

I'm changing, she's not. How to talk about it?

Friendfilter: I’m going through some life changes. One of my friends is behaving a little strangely. Almost seems angry at me because of how my life is changing. How do I address this with her?

Looking for work in the City of Flashdance. But no foundries, please...

TempFilter: I'm looking (at the request of a friend) for a high-quality temp agency in the Pittsburgh area (city or South suburbs). Office work-type assignments. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Wanting to give some king-sized comfort...any takers?

We have a king-sized mattress that wouldn't fit up the stairs in our new "old house". We've come to terms with the fact that we'll have to donate it and follow another plan. Which not-for-profit should we offer this to?

Have you ever worked as a temp slave?

Anyone here ever kicked off their "back to the world of employment adventure" by using a temp agency?

Suggestions for Parsing Blog Feeds Using PHP?

Can anyone suggest good PHP books or existing scripts that can help me successfully parse RSS 1.0, 2.0 and Atom 0.3 feeds, then save them to a MySQL database?
