My darling girlfriend and I have a birth control dilemma and need some input. The short of it is this: because of regular medications she has to take, we're encouraged to use two forms of birth control. Consequently she takes Seasonalle and we use condoms. The question is: would the current breed of hormone-releasing IUD products suffice as two forms of birth control?

Aperture or Lightroom? And do I let them manage my library? It's been
a year since it was addressed and both applications have come a long way. So... have opinions been changed? Critical features added? Achilles heels revealed?
And regardless of which I pick, should I suck it up and let them manage my library or stick with my hierarchical self-managed structure?

This is a two parter. One: there's a disparity in behavior between the search box on the bottom and top of Ask. Two, why isn't 'recent activity' set to nofollow like profile pages?

For my woodshop, is there an alternative to a house with a basement? Trying to find rentals in the DC area with unfinished basements I can use as a workshop is challenging. Finding affordable properties to purchase even more so. What else can I do?

An organization focused on photographic rights.
After Chip Py was stopped from taking photos on what everyone thought was a public street we all discovered that Montgomery County had sold off their citizen's property and rights for $1 a year. When is public space not really public? When the government pumps millions of development money into it and hands it over to a private corporation to manage.
We think this is unacceptable. Public money equals public space. We'll be out for a photo outing in Downtown Silver Spring, Maryland on July 4th at Noon to show that we believe civil rights aren't something you should have to be granted by a corporation.
The chronology, detailing Chip's initial harassment though the Peterson Companies' partial capitulation, is all on the Free Our Steets website.

I've submitted this to Projects since I think the issue has nation-wide interest, but I also wanted to shout out to the Baltimore & D.C. area mefites whose backyard this is happening in and invite you all to come along. If you haven't been following
the Silver Spring photo debacle covered by the
Washington Post,
DCist,
DC Metblogs (disclosure: that's me) and others, you might not be aware of
our planned gathering on July 4th.
We've scheduled it at Noon so you still have time to leave and head off to whatever BBQs and fireworks watching you have planned for the evening and the location is just two blocks from the Silver Spring metro.

Microsoft acquires Winternals Software.
It's impossible to know what the repercussions will be, but you can be sure it won't take long for every possible worst-case scenario to be predicted. Any why wouldn't it? The possible loss of invaluable FREE tools like the
Registry Monitor,
Process Explorer,
Port Monitor and
File Monitor is a little scary - both have saved my developer hide on several occasions. Will they get folded into Vista? Will they still be available as PowerToys? Unknown. "Microsoft is still evaluating the best way to leverage the many different technologies that have been developed by Winternals"
The site's a little slow right now - I wonder if that's people madly downloading copies of the current versions out of fear they'll go away any moment?

This post was deleted for the following reason: what a mess
So that's the barometer now for
thread deletion? It doesn't have a clear purpose, goal, or problem to be solved, is too chatty OR there's enough douchebags misbehaving in it?
This precedent sucks.

When my Windows XP laptop starts up it gets to a point where there's a few minutes of delay before the network or other critical stuff starts. I've tracked it down in the log to a specific app's starting but the "did not register with DCOM within the required timeout" error is eluding my efforts at resolution.

Virtual Tresspassing
is yet another Google maps mashup, but one of the minority (at least that I have found) that let you add markers of your own that are persistent and visible to others. Is it at all useful?
Who cares, I was a cute kid and I don't have to risk PMITA prison like a common street tagger - I can be leet and from da streetz while remaining a pasty-faced geek.

In another thread
caddis said "Beth, is Matt going somewhere? I would guess that if a meteor dropped on his head tomorrow, MetaFilter would just fade into history." and it made me curious. Now that MetaFilter is a full-time job and presumably a corporation which Matt would leave to someone,
is there some sort of "if I get hit by a bus" plan? [mi]

This thread is a disaster. It has such a long pissing match in it that advances nothing that I simply cannot see going click-click-click all the way through the noise to flag each off-topic post. I feel like I need a button for "there's so many violating posts in this thread I cannot possibly flag them all individually and still have time for 3 squares and 8 hours of sleep in a day." [mi]

On any given week there's someone pissing about the degeneration of quality or civility on MetaFilter/the Internet/the World. As far as I'm concerned if there's
one post like this for every 10,000 assclown postings I will still consider there to be more signal than noise. Thanks to you, paulsc, and every other person who's contributed their personal story on AskMe and made my life richer in doing so. There have been many.

The car rental company wants money and I don't want to pay. Does it get any simpler? Well, it gets more complicated - I've been told the country in question reimburses for pothole damage and I like the idea of them paying much more than me paying. But is it true?

So when is unhelpful okay and when is it not?
This thread is a lot of fun, but it's also a lot of noise. I assume nobody cares because it's kind of a goofy question, but I think it raises the issue of when is unhelpful okay in AskMe and when isn't it? [more inside]
