TclFilter: Assuming $var is already set, is there any performance/efficiency difference if a Tcl proc calls "return $var" versus just plain "return"

The RSOE Global Disasters Service
tracks seismic activity, bird flu, chemical spills and even
vehicle accidents by
monitoring and processing data of approximately 600-700 news sources, many researching institutes and realtime data of forecasting services. I've subscribed to the
RSS feed and you should too . . . you've been getting too much sleep anyway. [

How long should a generally good contributor be banned for giving a
bad jokey answer to a controversial AskMe topic?

Band of Brothers
is an organization of
Democratic veterans running for U.S. Congress. Maybe you'll hear about their DC rally today on the
news (but don't hold your breath). Currently,
vets in the Senate are about evenly split among the GOP and Dems, but Republican vets are the majority in the
House. This is likely to change if the Democrats take control of Congress in this year's elections, in which the Iraq War will be a primary issue. Has a
White House full of
chickenhawks destroyed the GOP claim as the military party?

What? Already. What are
you people on about?
Can you be a more explicit in your sugestions for improving my post than just telling me
it sucks? A hint, perhaps, to the nature of the suck, rather than just its degree?

It should be mentioned wherever possible,
and it should not stop until the mainstream media and all politicians realize that we, the people, will not stand for gross negligence, willful and wanton misconduct, nor the utter lies, any longer."We" the people? Or just a couple of blowhard bloggers? Do you feel a storm brewing?

9 Anti-Porn Myths Debunked,
a July entry on the porn-industry blog
SugarBank, generated some pretty good debate on the subject of degradation. Comments have been
closed, so now I'd like to read what you people think
(yes, I'm a selfish, greedy prick). Yesterday, I was firmly in SugarBank's camp, but after reading
this today, I'm not so sure.
It's about porn, so maybe NSFW, but there's no dirty pictures or anything.

I have my preferences set to open links in a new window, but this should only apply to external links right? When I click [!] on a post, the flag form appears in the same tab (using Firefox obviously, on Windows), but when I hit the "Flag this post" button on the form, the result (including the redirect back to the thread) opens a new tab. I've noticed other situations too where internal metafilter links open in a new tab. Minor, but an annoyance of note.

If you had any doubt,
"homeland security" is not being used as an excuse to silence dissent in today's America, I submit to you the case of
Willie Fontenot. A personal hero of mine and
others, Willie has worked for decades, gently and with integrity, from inside Louisiana's
state corporate government for the cause of environmental justice. But no more, he has been forced to resign from the state Attorney General's office for refusing to capitulate to corporate goons (literally!) harassing a group of students taking pictures of an oil refinery.
