Advice for first trip to India?
Excellent weather! Some thoughts, if you're doing Mumbai, then there are tours that 'do' Dharavi, Asia's largest 'slum' and now famous as a hive of entreprenuerial activity at the base of the pyramid.
Mumbai to Pune to Goa is worthwhile - Goa is probably already known to you as a tourist destination but Pune (Poona) on the way is not only a thriving industrial city but its pretty and quite like Bangalore and there are mountains and resorts (lonavla, khandala) on the way.... [more]

general differences between north and south in no random order (btw bombay is neither, its the midwest har har) - some are true, some are "common stereotypes" but even they are usually founded on 'truth'
the south is considered gentler, more educated, more conservative in general. women are better treated and educational opportunities are open to both men and women. Kerala for example has an almost 90% plus literacy rate. the north particularly Dehli and its... [more]

Lost in the Asian market; I cannot yet shop happily.
Lee Kum Kee has a nice range of ready made sauces and spice mixtures for stir frys and other chinese dishes - 60 cents each and in little pouches. I make a stir fry with fresh mushroom, fish balls sliced, broccolli, bean sprouts and a bit of ginger sliced thin. excellent with rice.
sheets of spicy seaweed as snacks

My name and headshot showing up in unauthorized or illegal websites
dirtynumbangelboy: because its my ethnicity, so its not like its autogenerated content as TomMelee asks below, but deliberate matching of a race as per my photograph with the pron site that says "HOT XXXRACE BABES here" kind of thing.
So unless the various face matching technologies have caught up with that, it looks like an attempt to defame my good name? Particularly since my ethnic community places a very high value on a woman's good name and reputation.... [more]

SCDB: I hear what you are saying but I have made many friends from those who subscribe to my blog and I know some who use googleblog search to read my latest posts. I am ashamed to ask them if this popped up on their readerviews.

My lawyer has provided the means for the first two, my question relates to some kind of permanent solution or protecting my headshots - they are not just on my blog but wherever articles written by me are published. You know like how on flickr if you right click on some pictures they show up as "spaceball.gif"? except I don't know how to do that and furthermore is there a way to ask every place which publishes my headshot to protect it?
I can't keep paying my... [more]

leon: I don't know about the picture going out by RSS, it showed up in both my bloglines subscription, which is RSS, to the google blogsearch for keyword "my full name in two words" then to ensure that it wasn't just a random rss feed or keyword usage I went to google blog search where along with the latest posts, writing, whatever these sites are showing up.
As for the internal format on that site itself, sending them the correct form letter and contacting... [more]

genghis: Yes, I went and looked, where my headshot is located some of the titles of my articles refer to the country of origin - but there is no mention in my bio. I guess I'm going to have to change the titles of already published articles in msm that I've listed on my about page to break any link to racial origin. Thank you for the suggestion.

Your lawyer advised you to take this racist and sexist appropriation of your image as a compliment?
Hm.

no, not the pic, the earlier usage of my name as the title of the porn page. late last year my name was used a google ad word by another consultant for his website so its not like we've not had that problem before but this was pr0n and sick not just diversion of googlejuice.

Hey guys :) My lawyer rocks! He NEVER implied what the commenter above interpreted from my original comment. My lawyer is probably the last person to make any such comment, he was very clear about the compliment - that my brand would draw traffic to the site, that my implied googlejuice was the reason for the misappropriation of my image and name, Not my race or gender - in his own way he was doing exactly what toomuchpete says above, trying to make me feel better about this happening. That it... [more]

to clarify: I was the one wondering if I was targetted rather than it being an automated bot scraping because of the ethnic match to the picture, and that question was well answered above. I guess I just never think of myself as an attractive woman ;p I'm too busy being a geek with my head stuck in a large scale systems design project.

What are your favorite rural areas of the United States?
driving through the back roads of PA from Pittsburgh to the Delaware WaterGap during fall when the leaves turn colour, the hills are rolling, there are farms in some places and others just forest. that is some beautiful countryside Pennsylvania has.

Tell me to turn my sink off
There's a drought going on in the US as well today, not just Australia, so there's your key reason for conserving water right there.
More than water itself, its been interesting to see the mountain of PET bottles that water comes in and how only 30% or so of them are recycled - the latest being school uniforms made of old plastic bottles.... [more]

What's this P1 in my eyeglass prescription?
three types of eye correction
for short sightedness,
for long sightedness,
and for astigmatism, the spherical stuff.
I'm guessing you got a combination prescription which includes correction for a minor astigmatism [the wiki article doesn't mention this word at all]

thank you zadermatermorts, I was going by pure guesswork based my own prescriptions and how they've changed to accomodate the changes of increasing astigmatism in addition to myopia over the past 32 years.

When vous becomes tu
I do know that there are three variants in spoken hindi - aap, tum and tu . I didn't study the language formally but as far I know [its my mother tongue] aap is the politest most respectful version and if I ever met someone whom I would refer to as aap, I'd never ever shift to a tu with them [the third one] - at the most, if that person were an age peer they might become a tum reference.
The shift is rare and usually between family members or couples.
