I want my music back

iTunes failure. Version 6.0.5. Attempting to open it through terminal gives "terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::out_of_range' what(): basic_string::substr"

Picking up where I left off.

Creative Zen Nano 1gb— The damned thing's stopped resuming where I left off. Creative's customer support has been useless. For troubleshooting recommendations, please keep in mind that I have a Mac, but I use it mostly as a USB drive that can play mp3s.

I weep for my pan

In a moment of epic dumbassery, I turned on the wrong burner this morning and managed to melt part of a spatula to an $80 calphalon fry pan. If it wasn't coated, I'd just use steel wool. Is there any way to get the melted plastic off? How fucked am I? Can I heat it up again? If so, how should I do it?

Los Angeles Falafel Filter

Los Angeles Falafel filter: I want good, vegetarian Middle Eastern food up to the Dearborn standard, ideally on the west side of LA (Palms neighborhood), but I'll roam from Culver City to Hollywood (or around Amoeba) to find a great pita place.

OH NO! HER FAVORITE PANTS!

Khaki pants— $50 or less solution to fix girlfriend's khaki pants. Went through laundry with detergent on top; got orangish bleach stains. Dye? Some sort of hot soak with other khakis?

Suit me up

Los Angeles Interview Suit— I need to find something cheap for interviews after finding my last suit had irreperable moth holes in the pants (yeah, you can tell that my last couple of jobs haven't really required dap to the tap sartorial sense). Where in the LA area can I get a cheap (nice) suit fairly quickly?

The Political Philosophy of Moderation

Are there any good academic papers out there applying political theory and philosophy to the moderation of online forums? Also interested in recommendations of papers on moderation in online forums in general.

Iraq troop prediction numbers

Anyone have predictions (with citations) offered on how many troops would be necessary in Iraq? I've heard that generals said up to 300,000 in the run-up, but I can't seem to find sources for these.

Ah feel like ahcid

The best films to see while tripping? LSD, HDTV, surround sound, on DVD? Looking for visual effects, chromakey, 3000 miles from home, set controls for the center of the sun, etc.

Festive Pants?

Idiom filter: Party Pants. I was watching Cien Mexicanos Dijeron (the Unavision version of Family Fued) with my girlfriend, when they got to the final stage, where two people try to answer quick questions with the most popular answers. We didn't manage to catch the first contestant's answer, nor the question, and the second contestant was clearly just spitballing with her answer of what we believe was "cepillo de dientes" (toothbrush). According to the the host, the most popular answer was "pantalones festivos." Festive pants? What the hell?

GOAL! How to have best Premier League fantasy team?

Fantasty Futball: After a couple of years of playing fantasy baseball and fantasy football (American), my pals have decided to level our playing field a little by creating a fantasy league for English Premiership games (mostly in order to give us a vested stake in watching the games, since we're Americans without the loyalties of home squads). Regarding this— What should I know about the English Premier League? Who are the players to watch? Who are the teams to love? Who should I develop irrational hatred for?

Help Me, Geek Force Alpha— Server Issues

Website/Weblog/Apache/Chroot/mod_rewrite Wordpress? I've been hired to create website content for a record store. That's turned into also being in charge of the website creation/management. They already have hosting, a virtual server that uses chroot to keep separate clients separate. I had hoped to use Wordpress, and the guys who hired me want something that looks bloggish, even while maintaining their eBay store as the ecommerce backend (posts/album descriptions with samples would link to eBay auctions). The problem is that Wordpress needs to use mod_rewrite access (in Apache) to create permalinks when content is added (through .htaccess), and the host has said that mod_rewrite is a security risk for the rest of his clients unless we go for dedicated hosting. He's talked about using read/write permissions access to circumvent the need for .htaccess.

Swamp gas?

Research: Where should I look for stories or journalism about the type of thing that happened in the Superdome during Katrina, specifically where people believed (and reported to the press) that they had seen horrific acts that later were determined never to have taken place? I'm not even sure what the correct term would be (mass hysteria?) but I'm interested in the unreliability of primary sources in journalism, especially as it relates to Katrina.

The Wild East

What was life like in Siberia circa the mid-1820s? Specifically, what was life like for Decemberists who were exiled there? I have heard that it was like the Wild West, only much colder. Are there any good books on this? I've found a couple of websites referenced, but, well, I don't speak Russian. Academic history papers are also appreciated. Any good authors, novels, histories, authorities would be a help. (As a corrolary— was there a concerted exploration and surveying movement in that area at the same time? What would it have been like to be on the frontier? How would it have been different from the American frontier of a similar time [which would have been around Ohio and Michigan]?)

Veggie eats in Big Easy?

Vegetarian in New Orleans. I will be there during Mardi Gras, and need to find some good chow. (The previous question tagged with vegetarian and New Orleans was pretty disappointing). I will be in Jefferson Parish, mainly, and on a pretty tight budget. Also needed- recommendations for good record stores in the Big Easy. I will be there next week.

People take pictures of each other, only I can't.

Got a Kodak Brownie, looks good. Cleaned out the gunk on the lens (looked like battery corrosion wtf?), tried to slap some 120mm film in there. For some reason, it's too damned tight, and I'm afraid of ripping the film when I advance it. Anyone had this problem?

On the way out, man.

I'd like to make op-art style backgrounds for posters. I've been doing it with french curves by hand, but I'd like to use a computer to cut down the amount of time it requires (and the steady hand— curse you, strong drink!).
