Paddling with Polar Bears
So did Scott Anderson and his friend, and Scott wrote a damn fine book about the experience.
Among many other accomplishments, Scott was an F-16 fighter pilot in the Air National Guard in Duluth, Minnesota. His full-time occupation was a test pilot for Cirrus Design. In 1999 he was testing a version of the SR20, when the plane crashed in Duluth, and Scott was killed at the age of 33.... [more]

I'm surprised this the first post to employ the "microchipcatflap" tag.

It gets worse: Not only is JW spamming for Pet a Porter or whatever it is, but he apparently sells the product, too!
From the "Letter of the Day" posted on the site:
PLEASE CAN YOU CONFIRM THAT CATS ARE UNABLE TO DO THIS WITH YOUR UNIT?

mediareport: Like pyrex, I have a sneaking suspicion that the "JW" in "JW Enterprises" stands for . . .
(wait for it)
JAMES WINSOAR!!!!!
Wait a minute--if it's true that he's just shilling for his own product, perhaps he then is also the owner of the other companies for which he claims to have spammed: Orvis, Amazon UK, etc.
I take it... [more]

Is there a Yellow Pages for blogs?
No, no, my apologies--I guess I didn't phrase the question correctly. I didn't mean that I would contact them all at once (a la spam). As a matter of fact, I've had some good luck contacting dead-tree media people on a one-by-one basis, who have been a little easier to fine. And I intend to make the same one-at-a-time reachouts to the bloggers, if only I could find a place that aggregated the contact/subject matter of a large assortment of them.

Okay--thank you all for your time and help. I guess it's going to take a little longer for my earthshaking product to, uh . . . shake the earth.

Money for the American dream...
1. Nthing Virgin Money, but a cheaper bare-bones option is LoanBack
2. Make the repayment period really long, so that the monthly payments are tiny (like $50 or something) and doable almost no matter what happens to your friend.
3. Be pleasantly surprised to receive the money in repayment--any other expectations may lead to disappointment.

The Something Store
Cute idea. But about 5,000 somethings ordered in the last 6 1/2 months, according to the site (and I'm guessing the busiest months were right before Xmas, after which activity has tailed off considerably). So . . .
1. $50,000 in revenue
2. Minus $10,000 in shipping costs (@ say, $2 each)
3. Minus $15,000 in product costs (@ say, $3 each)
4. Minus other overhead expenses
5. ?????

This is where your math is off, assuming they're buying bulk lots
Which is true--except the larger the bulk of their lots, the less product-differentiation they have (and the more likely it is that customers like kscottz are to be disappointed). And the smaller the lots are, the more likely that the cost-per-item is higher.
Interesting concept, though, from both a business model and consumer standpoint.... [more]

Nigerian Scammers
I think the only way Netflix's could be worse would be if clicking on the "customer support" button got you rickrolled.
I would gladly do business with any company that adopted the song's lyrics as their principles of customer service.

Take my arm, my love
An uptight mother I know was horrified that her daughter came out as a lesbian. Imagine the mother's relief when the daughter and the daughter's lover formed a business together, so that the mother could then refer to the girlfriend as "my daughter's partner."

Is it Sweeps Week already?
HICST--
Not to speak for the commenters, but I don't think they intend to make light of the tragic deaths of these young men. What is disturbing (and perhaps, being mocked) is the willingness of some (especially breathless reporters) to believe that these deaths are due to an improbable group of serial killers, rather than the impaired judgement caused by intoxication.

In particular, it's indicative that they always seem to reuse the same picture of a happy face; it'd be a heck of a lot more convincing if they showed us a few dozen.
I've seen the various faces (I believe in this story). They were actually as dissimilar as several smiley faces could be (but then, if different crews were creating the smiley faces, well, that would explain it).

Long Island's Gold Coast Ruins
Thank you for the post, 445. I happen to enjoy the "grand country home" thing as well, but what is even more interesting is all the time, money, and passion that was put into designing, building, and outfitting these places. And then within a few decades, they're destroyed.
Hopefully, we'll see the same thing with the McMansions in fifty years.

how do you throw a ball?
"T"-"L"-Step, and throw.*
Make a "T" with your arms, with the ball-holding hand behind your head, and the other side of the "T" pointing toward your intended target. Bring the ball-holding hand up so that your arm makes an "L." Step toward your target with the foot opposite of your ball-holding hand, and throw it.

This is very similar to the "abstinence vs. sex education" debate--i.e., accepting the way things are vs. the way we wish they were. Except that in this instance, I'm guessing that the political ideology of the realists and idealists are reversed.

I think this is a pretty lame FPP, although the blame really goes to the exceedingly lame linked article posted by Kadin 2048.
I blame the article, too.
And society.
