My my my

After breaking up with his band, Justin Vernon retreated to his father's cabin in the northwoods of Wisconsin to recuperate over the winter.

Is there a Yellow Pages for blogs?

What's an easy way to efficiently find and contact many different bloggers at once?

The current talent pool is too small (get it?)

Looking for relatively-secure employment, decent wages, and the satisfaction of helping Planet Earth? There's a coming shortage of workers in the Waste Water Treatment industry! (via)

Is it Sweeps Week already?

Who (or what) is killing our college boys? Over the past decade the bodies of dozens American male college students have been found drowned, near their respective campuses. The victims were usually last seen drinking at parties or area bars before they disappeared.

"Let's be careful out there"

Next time you thump an animal on the highway, don't just drive on like nothing happened. Stop, get out of your car, and measure the carcass for entry into the Roadkill Record Book Club.

"At least we still have Mr. McFeely."

Sadly, Mister Rogers only lives on in our hearts and minds. But Speedy Delivery is alive, well, and the subject of a new documentary film made by a 26 year-old fan (previously).

A single link to Ceiling Cat video, because I know how busy you are

FREE CEILIING CAT!!! And when I say, "Free ceiling cat," I don't mean this. Warning: CNN video, and previously.

Great moments in entrepeneurial inspiration

The gun dealer who sold the ammunition used in both the Northern Illinois and Virginia Tech campus shootings obviously feels remorse over his role, and wishes to atone. His solution? A (concealed) gun for every student.

"Yeah I watched the shit out of it."

Bob Odenkirk and David Cross are back on HBO with a new comedy, with Cross playing himself and Odenkirk directing. The pilot's being filmed in May in Los Angeles, and apparently they'll be needing "150 audiencers" (and here's Cracked's Five of the Funniest Mr. Show sketches to masterfully pad out the post).

No, FIRST come the murders. THEN comes the film.

Usually, movies based on serial killers are made long after the crimes are committed. This could be the first film inspired by someone who didn't begin killing serially until more than a decade after the movie was made.

"Cause E's Got It All Covered"

Whew--just squeaked this post in for Black History Month. Vintage YouTubery of Richard Pryor, Jackie Robinson, Bill Cosby, and James Earl Jones, each reciting The Alphabet on Sesame Street. And then Patti LaBelle blows 'em all away with a Gospel Rendition.

Who's watching my domain name searches?

I looked up a domain name at networksolutions on February 19, 2008. The .com and the rest of the suffixes (suffi?) were available. I checked back today to find that the .com version had been purchased on the same day that I researched it. It's now hosted at "reserveddomains". 1. Who bought it? Network Solutions? 2. Whatta the odds?

He's more NORML than he appears

You may know Rick Steves the Travel Dweeb from his PBS series on European travel tips, which he has leveraged to build a burgeoning tourism business. But the dude's down with the cause(s) , including serving as the host of an ACLU-sponsored program on drug law reform.

Honey, I swear--it's tuna fish!

Attention most ladies and certain gentlemen: Do you think your man has been cheating on you? Well, there are several ways to check up on him. But budding rap star Riskay has her own special method (warning: pretty much NSFW, and autoplay of a really wonderful song in the last link).

"IT'S THE COPS!!"

Teenage partiers typically know what to do when the police show up: run. It's so common that some enforcement agencies have developed a protocol to handle the situation. But some underage drinkers came up with a new way to deal with a potential bust: barricade yourselves (and your parents) inside for about five hours (and see if the courts rule in your favor?).

Who's the new kid?

Scientists introduce "state-of-the-art robot" to a group of toddlers. By the time the experiment ended, the children were treating QRIO as a peer (Quicktime video of giggling, hugging, "displacement hugging,""night-night," and defiant assistance). Oh, and via.

That's not funny.

Did you hire Silly the Clown for your kid's upcoming birthday party? Well, he may not be able to make it. And it's probably just as well.

Random act, or conspiracy?

Michael Zebuhr was a 25-year-old Ph.D. candidate at Clemson University. A year ago he was visiting his sister in Minneapolis, and was killed during an attempted hold-up. The assailant pleaded guilty, but others think there is more to the story.

Jim Gray is missing

"Urgent . . . Jim Gray" Jim Gray is a well-respected researcher at Microsoft, and has been called "THE SQL Guru and Architecht." Last Sunday night he went out on his boat, and has yet to return. Read the touching story about how Silicon Valley's "best and brightest" are using all their technological savvy to find their colleague and friend. Godspeed. (previous post on Jim Gray here)

Now this kind of rap I can DIG!!

The King Dream Chorus and Holiday Crew Twenty years ago various rap artists got together to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (taking some inspiration from Artists Against Apartheid). You'd think Grandmaster Melle Mel, Kurtis Blow, and Run-D.M.C. would be enough. But you'd be wrong. Lisa Lisa, Teena Marie, Fat Boys, and El DeBarge wanted in, too. All kinds of youtubey goodness here, including Ricky Martin as part of Menudo, and several solos by a scrumptious Whitney Houston. Lyrics are here, and you can buy the single here

Showing them what I'm worth

A company has asked me to serve as a "lead generator" for them. I will be paid an hourly fee to call potential customers, and then turn interested leads over to the sales team. How do I show my employer what the potential benefit would be vs. the cost of paying me?

Washington D.C. Bachelor Party Suggestions?

I'm throwing a bachelor party in the D.C. area in October. Groom and guests are all mid 30s. Techies, med school, law school, etc--generally nice guys. As far as I know, they are equipped with penises. Yet they're not really the "stripper" sort--more likely to appreciate a pint of Guinness and a well-turned smart-ass remark. What kind of unique and interesting events/activities can I arrange that will cause groom and guests to expound to no end about what a great weekend they had? Bars and restaurants suggested will be appreciated as well.

Can I get me some five-dollar tech support?

I have an old Dell PC (Optiplex GX1--"Opti" for "the eye," and "plex" for the . . . oh, never mind), and bought a new Dell. I'm trying to transfer files from old to new, but I think the lack of a hi-speed USB port in the old Dell is hindering my experience (more inside--really!).

"People, PLEASE take one step back!"

Would you step on a teenage girl to see B5? No, not that B5, this one ( warning: you'll be greeted by the compelling sounds of a Radio Disney ad).

For many of us of a certain age, The Who in Cincinnati was the defining moment in uncontrolled concert crowds. Those a little younger may only know of this tragedy.

Don't bother creating a helpful site to log crowd complaints--these guys have already done it (complete with cartoonish graphics). If you like your crowd control info framed, try this site.

FemFilmFilter.

Hypothetically, let's just say you . . . I dunno . . . are in charge of "movie night" for 40 womyn, who work with victims of . . . let's say . . . sexual assault on a daily basis. What films would you recommend? A little on the lighter side is preferable, but Thelma and Louise-ish is okay, too. An apt theme might be "Right on, sister!"
