Ask post: Help me decide what to research.
Prosper.com, a massive peer to peer lending site/community makes its data publicly available. You could ask and answer a lot of interesting questions about women's borrowing and lending habits. You could also probably find a comparable data set to compare online and offline lending options.

Ask post: Where can I find a reasonably priced, stylish, rugged, and roomy messenger bag?
I like Timbuk2, too, and you can get many of their bags for 1/3 to 1/2 off at Sierra Trading Post.

Ask post: Question about seeing football in England.
Premiership matches are very safe these days (at least as long as you don't go out of your way to provoke anyone). They are very family friendly. You will have no problem with safety, and most people will probably be very nice. You will see a ton of other kids there.
There are tons of police and stewards around to help with you with directions etc and you should have no problems.

Stamford Bridge has some very poor sight lines, you really need to... [more]

Ask post: Help me finish my degree
If the best option is to transfer your additional credits back to U. of Tennessee, then you will probably need US accredited classes. I would suggest American study abroad programs in London the UK (there are tons of them and many accept students from any University). You might even call the study abroad office at Tennessee to find out about programs in the UK.

If you only need about a year or credit, two semesters of "study abroad" in the UK with programs... [more]

Ask post: what's made in usa and where do i get it?
This Union label site has a whole slew of stuff made in the US with union labor. There is also Shop Union Made but the website doesn't seem to work well.

Also, Timbuk2 no longer makes all their bags in the US. They also have production in China, Vietnam and the Philippines.

Try Palazzone, not too far from the border of Umbria.
This place is great.

BET news has an African-American angle. Although it's still news from an entertainment channel, some of it is OK quality.

Ask post: Scotland-a-go-go Land
You can get very cheap train tickets far in advance, you just need to buy your ticket now, including picking specific trains. Also look for tickets departing after 9:30am, that's considered off-peak. Flexible tickets are very expensive, if you can pick a train and commit to it you can get a pretty good deal if you buy as soon as the tickets go on sale (I think it will be three months in advance), maybe as low as about 30 pounds roundtrip.

The train ride is very pleasant,... [more]

Ask post: Inexpensive venue in NYC
The United Federation of Teachers has a very good conference center in lower Manhattan (the Feldman Center). I can't find much information online so I would suggest calling them. I think they probably have special rates for non-profits.

Ask post: all this art is making me hungry!
There is some OK food in the museum itself. Otherwise, walk across the street and down Washington Ave. It depends what kind of food you like. Here's a reasonably accurate list. Lots of good Caribbean food available.
I think Cafe Shane is pretty good for more American cuisine. The best place though is Tom's, although you may have to wait for a table on a Saturday (and they are closed Sunday). It is old- fashioned American lunch counter/diner food, which I guess doesn't suit... [more]

Ask post: Help me learn math!
Here's some great general advice from an economist about applying to Econ Ph.D programs. She confirms the point about taking real analysis. You need to get a grade for these classes so you can prove what you know. You can probably take them at a local college by registering as a part time student.

If you are going to edit/cut the conversation at all, the background music will sound really weird. If you aren't editing and you have good equipment, that may not be an issue.

Ask post: Where is a good place to honeymoon in the midwest U.S. in July?
Oxford, MS. Home of Faulkner, lots of beautiful natural scenery. Should be maybe a 6-8 hour drive. Very good for you as book and history buffs. It should be way doable within your budget.

Ask post: Any movies that deal with segregation in the southern United States?
I think the best documentary is At the River I Stand. It's about MLK, the Memphis Sanitation workers' strike, and the assasination. It's about an hour long and can be hard to track down, but many public and university libraries have it.

Ask post: Hooked up my iPod with a cassette adapter, but it keeps rewinding or ejecting. Help!
Try turning up the volume on the actual iPod (not the car stereo). Somehow this can help, not sure how. Try it at about 80-90% of iPod volume (then use the car stereo to adjust how loud you actually want it to be play).

Ask post: Canadian nurses in Engalnd? Anglophone nurses in Montreal?
Check the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council, the official registration body. This document contains most of the details.
Assuming her degree is accredited and accepted by the NMC, she would probably have to do a 20 day training program (for adaptation) and then have a supervision period when she is initially practicing nursing.
It should be fairly straightforward. I would call it relatively seamless, mostly bureaucratic.... [more]

Ask post: No agent, no pride
You should call the WGA with this question. If you are writing anything, and have been since the strike started, you would likely be considered a scab and probably ineligible for future Guild membership.
The writers on strike are not writing anything, hence the phrase "Pencils down means pencils down."
This applies to pitches, spec scripts, etc, not just writers who are under contract on a particular movie or show. If some writers write stuff on spec and others... [more]

Ask post: How to secure a bike on a porch?
See this previous question, and my answer. It's inexpensive if you're competent to do some fairly basic installation yourself. There are other answers in that thread, but my suggestion is the Krypotonite Stronghold. I guess she may need permission from the landlord to drill into the porch.

Ask post: Should we attend The Daily Show while the strike's still going on?
There are likely to be a few picketers at least. Also, even if there is no actual picket line it would still be considered (eg by the Guild) crossing the picket line. Just as if a writer went to work, even if there happened to be no pickets there, s/he would have crossed the picket line and broken the strike.

Drop them off at the 02, then drive back to the centre of Greenwich, a couple of miles away and park. Lots to do there. You would be fine just walking around. You can also see a film at Greenwich Picturehouse. There are lots of places to eat and drink.

Ikkyu2's advice is actually more applicable to the US situation than the UK.
You cannot be sacked for no reason, they must have a reason (assuming you have passed your probation, which it sounds like you have). Also, they cannot now try to make you so miserable that you leave, as that may be constructive dismissal, which is illegal.

You are right to document everything and insist on your right to be accompanied. As well as calling ACAS (maybe more than... [more]

The wool jerseys from Earth Wind and Rider are really great. Very nicely cut, warm, wicking, available in men's and women's cuts. If you get one of their long sleeved jerseys, you may have my problem, which is that I want to wear it every day, regardless of whether I am cycling.

Ask post: How can I secure bikes stored on a publically accessible patio?
I have the Kryptonite Stronghold . It comes with good instructions and a masonry drill bit. You can probably use the drill bit with a decent drill if you already have one, or rent one with more torque. It is very secure and not difficult to install, probably under half an hour if you are somewhat competent.
That page also features similar anchors that might be of use. I chose the Kryptonite one because it is designed not to need professional tools or installation.... [more]
