MeFi post: Stay Classy, Ingrid.
I finally understand why people hate PETA so much. This is way way over the line.

Lame.

Except "free," a limited number of times you can play a given track, and with ads all over it.

Other than that, ur-rite.

MeFi post: The Legacy of Lynching
Disturbing, but calling the lynching of 5000 black Americans a "holocaust" is doing a disservice to everyone involved.

It was terrible, but comparing it to the Holocaust isn't fair.

MeFi post: Adding up US subsidies for auto travel with and without the costs of war
For those of you who live in places where it isn't necessary, count your blessings and don't assume that your experience is universal. Outside major metropolitan areas, especially on the coasts, most US cities/towns are laid out explicitly to require private autos. The "public transport" in my town is laughable, and they're scaling it back to make it even more laughable. A car is a genuine necessity in many places.

You can always live... [more]

bshort Well, no, actually. It costs money to move, it requires a suitable job at the destination, it requires that you not have obligations requiring you to be where you currently are, etc.

Saying "well move then" is not a solution to the problem, but it does make you look both ignorant and arrogant.

Yes, I'm aware of that, but that doesn't change the fact that if you're not happy where you are, then you can always... [more]

Are you fucking kidding me?!?!?! You have a mouse. You use the mouse to move the cursor. When the cursor gets to where you want to go, you... press the SPACEBAR????

You didn't actually play the game, did you?

You should do that, then get back to us.

For now, your outrage privileges have been revoked.

MeFi post: More of the Same.
The 5G iPod has been out for two years. I've been putting off a purchase for a year or so because I figured an update was just around the corner and I wanted enough storage to hold all the music on my computer. It's taken a lot longer that I figured, but the fact that I can get 160GB for $350, and with an aluminum front instead of the super-scratchy acrylic, makes that wait worthwhile.

If you bought an iPod a month ago, then why is it any less useful that it was a month... [more]

This is seriously the most annoying line I keep hearing/reading about all this. Okay, we get it. You read Gizmodo. 99% of the country, myself included, don't. I'm not an "idiot" for not speculating Q3 product cycles- and again, even if I did, to say I should have "known" Apple was going to increase storage capacity nearly three times is laughable.

No, you're not an idiot, but the fact that you're posting here is proof that you have... [more]

MeFi post: Get the facts on Mitt Romney
I'm sure we'll hear more from Massachusetts Mitt if Redstate Romney is able to get past the Republican Primary.

Republican line: This time around we'll call it "nuanced reexamination," not "flipflopping!"
posted to MetaFilter by bshort at 5:13 AM on September 5, 2007
If the Republican party grassroots finds out that Mass Mitt enthusiastically supported a woman's right to choose then he's done.

The best part will be when they start running ads against him showing splitscreen footage of Mass Mitt and Redstate Romney duking it out.

That, and the Mormon thing, will depress the Conservative Christian / Republican vote like you've never seen.

Yeah, a rebranding will save them. [rolls eyes]

It's good to see the tide has turned against them. We shouldn't tolerate any sort of shenanigans in our electoral process. Especially not shenanigans that allow for tempering with vote counts without any sort of paper trail.

The irony is that it discredits him immediately. I guess it's a good thing Metafilterarians and anyone with a degree that involves math (or even maths) is not on the jury.

Well, it makes him look like an idiot, but an idiot who knows his field. He has an impressive ability to refuse to answer the question that I'm sure comes in handy when testifying.

MeFi post: Padilla Found Guilty on All Counts
I think it's great that they found him guilty, but it's a shame the administration didn't have enough faith in our system to allow it to work.

The system we have works very well, so long as we don't go breaking our own rules.
