Ask post: Accelerating with Excel
I'd just open the file in notepad and find/replace all spaces with "," and save it as a csv file. Re-open in excel and watch the magic unfold

Along those lines, you could also (in Notepad) replace all spaces with tabs, and just paste it into Excel. Notepad is your best friend when messing around with Excel.

Ask post: Drums for College Gameday?
I assume you don't mean the Big & Rich song, but this? You could use Audacity to rip the sound and use the resultant mp3 as your ringtone. The sound quality will be pretty bad though., so hopefully someone can identify the track and you don't have to use a third gen rip (but at least you have the option).

Ask post: Interviewing for a job with another offer already out there
FYI, the saying "when it rains, it pours" isn't meant to convey a positive or negative assessment of the situation; it's just referring to the fact that after a dry spell I have had one offer and one very promising interview in a span of three days, hence my question.

Ask post: What the hell is up with all these MySpace spams?
You aren't seeing unique usernames. What you see when people message you or post comments on your page are their names (or whatever "name" they feel like going by at the moment), which are dynamic and can be changed at any point. And spam accounts get deactivated all the time. But they get made again.

Ask post: Think Thin!
Buy something really, really nice that's a bit too small for you at the moment. As you steadily lose weight and notice the item fitting you better (try it in a couple weeks or so, depending on how it fits and how much weight you lose), you'll feel great and have a more tangible proof of progress than numbers on a scale.

Ask post: How can I sound informed about the Super Bowl teams?
This Slate article breaks it down nicely. You'll be seeing plenty of those, however. Major sports publications will have a Superbowl preview section, and the sports section of every major newspaper will be devoted to it as well. Naturally ESPN/Fox Sports and their ilk will be hosting Superbowl specials as well, so those are a good bet as well.

And this auction includes it, although it comes with 37 other issues from 1956. You might want to contact this seller as well, who will be auctioning off more lots of Life issues from that year. Who knows, maybe you could auction off the other issues individually and actually turn a profit!... [more]

Ask post: We need last minute fundraising ideas.
I don't see why you and the two active members can't "loan" the group the $50 it needs now, and then resume fundraising after finals. Then, after you make enough money, you can "reimburse" those who ponied up the $50. I'm sure there's a legit way to do it. Or you could do the normal thing, and ask the members for donations. I don't see what your problem with it is. It seems like the easiest solution, and the members would only have to contribute a minimal amount. And it... [more]

Instead of asking us, ask them. Being that the slideshow is primarily for them, I think their input would be much more helpful than ours. Have each of them nominate one song, and then pick the ones you think fit the slideshow the best.

Ask post: Where my lyrics at?
This is as official as you can get. $25 is a lot to spend to just settle a bet, but you are asking for definitive and websites online are definitely NOT. Try calling local record stores/guitar shops/music shops...Sublime is still pretty popular and there might be a copy you can just look at in the store. And for the record (maybe you already know this), the list of cities in the song were tour stops for the band in 1995...if one of those two cities makes a lot more sense as a tour destination... Ask post: Preparing for a panel job interview.
The hardest thing is to make sure to make eye contact with everyone. It's entirely possible that one or two people might not even ask you questions, but they are present because they are going to be part of the hiring process, so don't ignore them. Try to circle around...start your answer by looking at the questioner, then rotate so that everyone in the room makes some sort of connection with you while you answer. If you makes you feel more comfortable, remember that group interviews are also... [more]

Ask post: Has the Apple Records logo ever been used prominently on the outside of an album cover?
Apple E.P., which looks VERY rare and expensive BTW. This site has a photo gallery of all Apple releases. A few European 7" singles had a small Apple logo in the upper left corner, and some had cut-outs of the Apple logo.

Ask post: A Fun Trick-or-Treat House
Forget all these costume/decoration ideas...what kids really value is candy. Give out king sized candy bars. When I went trick-or-treating as a kid, there was one house in the neighborhood that always gave out huge candy bars, and to this day I can still point it out. King sized candy bars look cooler when kids do their inevitable post-trick or treat "dump all the loot on the ground and take inventory," and they're also very good trade leverage. Children will... Ask post: Is it possible to meet The Who before or after current shows?
If you're crafty (and desperate), try to find out if they're staying at a hotel and look for them there. I see that you're a Seattle U student, so I'll make the leap that you're in Seattle. Seattle doesn't have that many luxury hotels...the Fairmont Olympic is the fanciest, the W is if they're on a trendy kick, the Edgewater is probably where they stayed in the 60s/70s so maybe they'll go back, who knows. I really don't know exactly how you can find out, but make some phone calls and be... [more]

Don't supply references until you're asked. Don't even bother taking up space on your resume by saying "references available on request"...no kidding! It's totally superfluous; obviously if they ask for references you're going to supply them. Don't waste words on anything but necessities.

Ask post: How to Create a Calendar Feed for Favorite TV Shows?
Is there a way to do this that respects the timezone of the user? As a West Coaster, I find that most calendars made are designed for East Coast, so whether it's iCal or a public Google Calendar, shows that start at 9pm for me show up on my calendar at 6pm. I wouldn't even mind adding multiple calendars, if I could just adjust them for PST.

Ask post: what mp3 player should I get?
I find that most people who say that not buying an iPod is a statement and not a legitimate purchasing choice, or that there aren't any comparable mp3 players on the market are either woefully uninformed, or totally full of it. I bought a Creative Zen many years ago, and it's still truckin' to this day. What I like about Creative HD mp3 players is that it's very easy to transfer music on and off. Ask post: Implications in Ignoring IMs
I think it's rude mainly because there are plenty of services offered by AIM to allow people who need alone time to be left alone while still running AIM. I don't want to waste my time IMing someone if they don't want to be IMed. The best way for me to "get it" is to either be told "hey, I'm busy today, will IM you back when I can chat" or to receive an away/idle message. If she had wanted you to leave her alone, her responding to your first IM with such a message would... [more]

Ask post: Til Death Do Us Part..maybe...
Did you bother to ask your friend why she felt compelled to lie to her husband about spending time with her friends? You seem to be missing the big picture here; the lie is a symptom of the problem, which is that her husband apparently has such a problem with your friend's friends that she feels the need to lie about it when spending time with them. That doesn't sound like a healthy relationship to me...controlling who a spouse associates with is a sign of an abusive relationship. Not... [more]

Ask post: Alright -- how can I curb my appetite?
I object to being called a nerd, but I would like to second the Shangri-La diet. I've been using it for a few months and the results are amazing. The longest I had ever been able to stick to a diet was a few days, but I've lost 25 lbs so far on the SLD. Basically, you ingest flavorless calories (via sugar water or light tasting oils) no less than an hour before/after eating once a day (although I have been doing it once every three days with equally strong results, YMMV). You can't be honest and frank about money issues without creating awkwardness: that's life. And when people talk about dieting publicly, especially during the ordering of a meal, it can make you seem critical of those ordering the less health-conscious foods. Ask post: Calculus resources for the curious?
I vote for "Calculus: the Easy Way". Unlike the books that were recommended earlier it wasn't designed to be used in conjunction with a calc course, bur rather for self-teaching. The book follows a bit of a fantasy narrative (I swear it's not lame) where the characters in a kingdom are forced to use calculus to solve the various problems they face. It is very straight-forward, actually, and there are plenty of practice exams and math-y explanations. But the narrative makes a... [more]

I don't think regifting is really so bad as to constitute an answer/payback. I mean, it's not as if you used it and hastily reassembled it in the box before wrapping it up.
