I was recently given a
print. It was one of at least a handful identical copies made in 1972 by a student. There's a blowup of a part of it
here. Knowing nearly nothing about art, I'm very curious to learn how was this made. The hatching & stippling scream computer to me, but that seems unlikely, given the time. It seems like it was done in CYMK, with a brown key, & the offset of the brown & yellow is a bit off. Can anyone shed some light on the process, start to finish, behind this?

My parents have been reading a lot of pretty pessimistic, doomsday books about the US, world, etc. I'd like to get them a book that has a more optimistic outlook, without being naive. Any suggestions, oh hive mind? I'm not too picky about topics, but I'd prefer broader rather than narrower.

CrazyRussianMusicVideoFilter: I saw a great video by a Russian band from maybe 15 years ago, centering around an insane guy (real video, but made to look old), a cat (animated), and a painting that shows a doctor coming to bring him something (just strange). I was told the song was essentially about the same, and possibly titled with something about a cat. The band was named something like ночь, but youtube isn't coming up with anything like what I remember. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I remember ads from maybe the late 90s / early 2000s in bike magazines (especially mountain bike magazines) from Camelbak. These were fullpage ads, with a caption something like "Sweat out your demons -- refill with H2O." The one I remember distinctly had a photo of a mountain biker on a Utah-esque rock drinking from the Camelbak. Anyone know where I could get copies of these?

Someone quoted to me a quote last night that was along the lines of, "War is a brutal and horrible thing, and the more brutal and horrible it is, the faster it's over." He used this both in defense of using nuclear bombs in WWII and in support of a similar approach for Iraq. I don't agree.

Ok, lets try this again..
Who's up for an opening night (that's tuesday, as in 49 hours from now) Shakespeare in the Park mefi meetup? Its at 8pm in the Boston Commons. I'll be getting coffee after, if I can find anywhere that's open past dark (this f-in city doesn't know how to drink coffee, I swear).
The play is Midsummer Night's Dream. I hear its good ;)
I could be up for another night, but I have guests coming in & I'm not quite ready to expose them to MeFi yet, so Tuesday's my preference.

Is it time for a Boston-itself-Boston meetup soon? I flew in thismorning,
got my apt settled & now don't have work until the 26th. I'm right by Symphony, & can get anywhere the T goes, but I have neither bike nor car so I can't make much past that. I'm also (sadly, believe me) under 21, so I fear a pub crawl (as much as I'd love it) is out of the question. Also, would anyone living here be up for not-too-serious-slightly-more-than-but-basically-touch rugby on a semiregular basis?

With a large amount of time per day (say capped at 4 or 5 hours), what improvement could you expect to see over 6 months in running 800/1500m, starting with somewhere between a 4:45 & 5 minute mile? What would the workouts look like?

Today at the gym I saw a couple guys (football players, as it happens) doing an exercise I hadn't seen before. They started with a 50lb dumbbell in one hand, bent over towards that side (that quad ~ 45 degree angle to the floor), the dumbbell fairly close to the floor. They then pushed off with that quad, jumped/transferred weight to their other foot so their body was completely under their arm, & did a military-press-like motion with the weight. They did 3 sets of 10 with each arm. What is this exercise called? Also, what is that general style of exercise called (more active/full body than simply isolating a particular group), & what are some other examples of this style?

I'll be going to France in a little under 2 months, to stay 2 weeks with a family that doesn't speak much English at all, in a relatively small town that doesn't speak much English at all. I'm decently proficient, but not confident, and definitely lacking in the listening/speaking end. I have, however, 9 days coming up where I will have more than enough free time. I won't have an internet connection, but I'll have a laptop I can put stuff on. What is the best use of the next 2 months in terms of preparing for functioning well on the trip?

Speaker/ReceiverFilter: I have a recently acquired NAD 7240PE receiver, and a pair of older but fairly decent (I think) floorstanding speakers. The input source is clean (its a CD player that has its own headphones jack, and that's clean), but I'm running into a problem with the speakers + receiver.

Legend has it Navy SEALs (among others, certainly) can slow their heart rate and breathing down to almost nil. So could Michael Valentine Smith, for what its worth. Practically, to what degree is this possible, and how does one go about beginning to control ones breathing/heart/body in general more precisely?

I love
this photograph (I don't remember where I found it, unfortunately). How would I go about taking similar photos with a 35mm and/or digital camera? What kind of lense/lighting/setup would have been used for something like this? Is there a name for this kind of effect? Is there a good way to duplicate this effect in digital post-processing?

I have three (linked) questions: According to
this page, On the Road was adapted to radio for France Culture. I'd like to get my hands on a recording of this. I looked for a while, but Radio France doesn't seem to provide a way to buy radio shows on disc, and it looks like it was only aired once.

I picked up an HP LaserJet IIIp printer a few days ago. Its great, I love how the output looks, but any paper that goes through (regardless of which output tray I use) gets ruffled. I just tried an envelope, and the envelope came out with ridges every 1/2" or so. This can't be right... any idea whats wrong and how to fix it?

I get nosebleeds
very often during the winter, from about now until March. It sucks, and its incredibly inconvenient about 99% of the time. It seems to be primarily because of cold + dry conditions. I'm otherwise healthy, the doctor says there's no medical problem, even with the frequency I get them. Suggestions for preventing/lessening them?

I got a Chrome bag a month or so ago that's been working great. However, I don't like the Velcro. It's incredibly loud when it separates, which is fine for some things, but for getting in & out of it when I'm in a place I don't really want to make a lot of noise it's difficult.

I want to fly helicopters and actually do something useful while doing them. I don't really want to fly them fulltime. I don't want to fly helicopters in combat. News and tours are unappealing to me. Coastguard seems like the best bet, but many people have cautioned me that once you're in any military branch, you pretty much lose control over what you actually get to do or not. Other than that, I'm not sure where to look, in terms of training and then doing something with that training. Any advice on... any of that?

I'm already thinking about summer (maybe too optimistically at this point) but I know for sure that our plans include some camping trips. I'd like to bring my guitar along for kicks, but I don't know what to play. What are some good (not cliche, not sappy, etc) songs that would be good? Keep in mind that I'm not amazing at guitar, nor am I amazing at singing.

I've always played music through my PC & PC speakers, or through a cheap boombox/stereo. I get decent quality through my PC, but I'd really like to separate it out and get some good speakers for just for music. The problem is, I don't exactly know how to go about this.
